  • The secret to assembling the bench is...
Full disclosure. I've assembled (and disassembled) a LOT of stuff: furniture, appliances, home fixtures, cars engines, transmissions (automatic and manual), robots, machines of all types... So I may have a little advantage. I read the reviews about this bench before buying and there were quite a few peeps who thought assembly was a nightmare. I can understand their difficulties and frustrations. The instructions, if you can call it that, were pretty useless. Intuitively, one would assemble the bench in the normal, upright configuration (it looks like how a bench should look). The secret is to assemble it vertically from one end! That is, lay one armrest down flat on the floor/carboard. Place the back, seat and front bar into the armrest vertically. The alignment pins will keep things "balanced" while all the pieces are going in. Finally, place the last armrest on top of the pieces you have already assembled. Insert the screws and tighten. Tip the bench on it's back. NOT onto it's feet. If you tip the bench onto it's feet, there will be a lever created by the legs and it *might* disassemble. Once on it's back, insert and tighten the remaining screws. Check the entire assembly before inserting any screw. Ensure the alignment pins are seated properly. You may need to enlarge the receiving hole a little bit. I had to enlarge one hole about 1/16", if that. Entire assembly took me less than 30 minutes. If you own Torx wrenches, try your quality set and determine if it fits better than the piece of junk wrench that comes with the bench. You'll be less likely to "cam out" the wrench. ...even though Torx is not supposed to do that! Rub teak oil and let dry BEFORE assembling. You'll be able to oil the parts of the wood that gets covered when assembled. ... show more

  • I'm Surprised! Solid, sturdy, comfortable. A great bargain!
I'm surprised! This teak bench is VERY nicely made and the wood components are solid and sturdy. All wood is sanded ultra-smooth and rounded to eliminate sharp edges unlike what you find on many other less expensive benches. I also appreciate the design of the rounded top which gives it a more expensive, and classic, teak bench look. (by the way, this bench is still made of teak, unlike many others in this price range) Assembly was a breeze and it went together in minutes with no problem. The hard plastic "feet" which screw into the bottom of the legs allow you to balance the bench on uneven surfaces but, more importantly, help to keep the wood 1/4 inch off the ground to minimize wicking of water into the legs. That's a thoughtful design and this feature, alone, should help the bench last longer. Also, I nearly forgot to mention that it is exceptionally comfortable. Outside of a cherry glider we purchased years ago (from a maker that is sadly no longer in business), this is the most comfortable wooden bench we own, out of 4 total. It isn't the least expensive bench you can buy, but if you can get it under $300, I'd say it is a steal. I only wish they made it in a 5-foot length. ... show more

  • Great quality, solid wood
Got this bench when it was on sale for $125. Thought it was too good to be true but the bench is of great quality. Solid wood, partially pre-assembled. Only six screws to screw in. Not sure why a lot of ppl complained about assembling the bench, took about 20-min or so (much longer time to oil coat it up!). The torx wench came with it is junk, couldn't sit straight and tight. Got a torx socket set so that helps a lot. Want to buy a second bench but didn't realize it's +$400 now, duh! ... show more

  • A beautifully designed and finished bench…but be warned: assembly is a nightmare.
If you have a handy husband who never gives up and a strong marriage this bench may be for you. I will now let my husband explain: I blithely dismissed reviews critical of the manufacturer's inability (or indifference) to accurately fabricating the various components so that the pegs and holes aligned. I took the advice of several reviewers and applied teak oil before assembly. This was a good idea because if I hadn’t, I would have returned the unit 20 minutes after starting assembly which eventually took two three-hour sessions plus cursing. If you insist on going ahead be prepared to do this: 1. Develop a sequence of assembly because the instructions (one sketch with information that would be obvious to a child) are of no value. 2. Drill all of the peg holes larger by about 1/8” in diameter. Later on you may have to selectively enlarge some by even more. 3. Hint: As you join one piece to another tie the two components with string so they don’t collapse because the pegs will not hold the pieces in place. 4. At some point you may find it necessary to remove one or more pegs to get the assembled joints to “close.” The pegs easily screw out. It seems that most of the pegs are there to assure alignment before inserting the large screws that really hold the thing together. Most of the pegs do not perform a structural function. ... show more

  • Beautiful Teak Bench.
Nice product. Beautiful color and seems pretty durable. I have had it for a couple months now and my family really enjoys using this bench out in front of our house. I assembled it myself but it may be helpful to have a partner help line up pieces. Remember to follow instructions and always align all parts before going around and giving the final few cranks to tighten all bolts. Overall it fit together snuggle and seems pretty sturdy. I will likely cover it with other patio furniture to protect it during the snowy winter months. The color is great and I also understand the wood may change color to a grayish color over time, which still sounds very nice. I hope this bench will last me a number of years. I would recommend this product. ... show more

  • Celebrate of a life!
This was for my brother who passed away way too young. His son sits on it with his grandson and remembers good times with their dad, grandpa, my brother. Rest in peace Charles. I will always love you.

  • Awesome but takes skill to put together
We bought one; had tons of trouble putting it together; hired a guy who had it together fairly quickly so bought another one and let him do that one, too. It's got the right look and feel. Great product.
