I'm certainly not a coffee snob--but I love the idea of finding good deals, or the intersection of "good taste" vs. price. I bought 12 oz of this coffee, and one cup in, I'm impressed. The beans are oily and dark--I love that. I don't know if "oily" is good or bad, but I like that in my whole-bean coffee. The beans smell.... weird. Like steel? Not good. The smell of the beans before grinding smells like machinery... or something. I was worried. Then I ground them and put them in my Aeropress. Some sugar and half/half into the cup--and the coffee actually TASTES.... good! There might be a slight aftertaste of that "machinery" smell/taste.... but I'm not sure I'd notice it if I wasn't looking for it. Summary: Don't smell it, drink it. My wife and I have been super pleased with this overall. It is NOT the lightest of light roasts. I would say it's more a medium. Is there better coffee out there? Of course. But overall we've just grown a little tired of selecting a much more expensive coffee in store only to find it variable or just not what we like. This has been cheap and tastes decidedly GOOD and, overall, just saved us time! For the longest time I would've bet my life savings that you could open one of these bags without tearing it that really meant you needed a container to move the beans into, which we already have; something changed recently (maybe ~Aug/23) and now you can actually open the bag without tearing, which is a nice improvement. ... show more

Nice chocolatey overtones but I've yet to see a single bean shiny with oil. I'm a subscriber. Sometimes they come hard with a good vacuum seal and others arrive loose with no seal. This could be a great coffee if only...

Upfront, I am a dark roast lover. I enjoy the whole bean Bold roast but wanted to try something a little different. I get nervous when something isn't a dark roast as things always end up more of a "light" roast from my perspective and obvious love of a bold bean. I have to say that this Direct Trade Nicaragua is my new favorite "medium" roast! It is just that- a medium roast with a fairly full body. It has a nice aroma and you still feel like this will be a good day after your first cup! ... show more

I thought I had finally found a suitable replacement for Starbuck's French Roast beans. The first shipment of two bags was perfect, fresh, with great aroma and taste. The second shipment was not so fresh. When I tried to make a third purchase the product was unavailable! Amending my review to include the superior light roast. It's a much more enjoyable roast, with none of the harshness of the medium roast, yet still has a full flavor. And still one of the most affordable coffee choices around, especially for a whole bean option. 5 stars for light roast, 3 stars for medium roast. Medium roast. This is a very dark roast, despite its medium roast designation. Smells burnt right out of the bag. Flavor falls flat once brewed, a bit of toast, cocoa, and burnt paper. It's not terribly off-putting, just background. If you enjoy dark roasts or you're looking for a caffeine boost, and enjoy lots of cream and sugar, then this will work fine as an inoffensive choice. ... show more
