  • Good 4500 Joule Surge Protector if you live in an area with lots of lightning strikes (surges)
Size: 6-foot Cord
6-Foot Cord, 8-Outlet Power Strip Surge Protector, 4,500 Joule, Amazon Basics. This has a UL 1449 Voltage Protection Rating of 400V L-N, 500V L-G and 500V N-G (see photos; lower is better). 400V across all 3 paths is the best rating I've seen for the more stringent test in the newer version of UL 1449. So this Surge Protective Device (SPD) is good, not great, as far as the magnitude of the surge it will let through to your equipment (TV, washer with electronic controls, computer, microwave etc). But, if you live in an area with Very Frequent surges (like down south with a lot of lightning strikes) you may want this model with 4500 Joules of capacity, which should LAST a lot LONGER than one with, say, 1080 Joules, as the surges keep coming and surging and coming......... It has a regular high profile, not flat, plug. Wide spacing on 3 of the outlets which will help plugging in some power supplies. By the way there is a so-called "OBJECTIVE REVIEW" on this product that says "This has the BEST SPECS but are they actually true?" and they "found an industry that is filled with misleading, deceptive and outright lying advertising." Short answer: Well, sure some advertising is misleading (this isn't unique to SPDs), but what else is new, and what evidence or specific information is in your review? My advice: find out the UL 1449 test results for the product. Try to get one that has a VPR (Voltage Protection Rating) of 400 Volts; but no higher than 500 V. Buy one with a "protected" indicator light. If you live in a low to moderate surge area, don't over-emphasize Joules. I have surge protectors with less than 1000 Joules that haven't burned out after 20 years of use in New England. Lower VPR will protect your equipment better; high Joules should make the SPD last longer, but I don't need a SPD to last 100 years. Look for a sticker on the SPD that indicates the UL 1449 rating is certified by a lab like UL or ETL. If in doubt, you can buy it and return it after examining it (the UL 1449 information is always printed on the device). Note as far as I know, for the Joules rating you either have to trust the manufacturer or open up the device, examine the components, and look up their Joule rating. Long answer: instead of vague claims of deceptive advertising. the other reviewer could use more substance and useful guidance in their review. "This has the lowest UL certified clamping voltage possible." First, the newer versions of the UL 1449 standard use the term VPR, not clamping voltage or let thru voltage, but since they mean almost the same thing, that's not a big deal. The reviewer should have included some evidence to back up their claim, such as a photo of the back of the SPD showing the VPR. Without a photo, they at least could have said what the VPR was, in Volts. Also there should be a sticker from the testing lab showing UL Listed or similar, e.g. ETL Listed. From their review of the 8' cord, 12 outlet model we still don't know what the VPR is. I bought the 6' cord, 8 outlet model. Mine does NOT have "the lowest UL certified clamping voltage possible." It's VPR is 400 V L-N, 500 V L-G, 500 V N-G. I have seen and I own several products rated at 400 V VPR across all 3 pair. Lower VPR is better, and if you're concerned about misleading advertising, the VPR can be verified by an independent lab, e.g. UL or ETL, following the UL 1449 test procedures. The biggest flaw I've seen in advertising for surge protectors is not clearly stating what the VPR is. ... show more

  • WARNS YOU WHEN IT'S EXHAUSTED
Size: 6-foot Cord
I've used Amazon surge protectors for the past several years, and to good effect. Electrical surges do happen. Over time, I have lost at least a thousand dollars worth of computer and wifi modems to such surges, when I did not have the properly protected. Each time a surge happens, some of the capacity of the protector is used up. Usually, after about 3 years, you should get a new one. The old one is still good as a power strip, but has diminished capacity to cushion a power surge. The Amazon units actually light up and warn you when it's time to replace them. ... show more

  • OBJECTIVE REVIEW - This has the BEST SPECS but are they actually true?
Size: 8-Foot Cord
MY BACKGROUND STORY I have personally and thoroughly researched a hundred surge protectors in order to determine the best surge protection system for my home. When I started this adventure, I wanted to know things like do I need lightning rods, what are whole house surge protectors, which are the best strip surge protectors, etc. And, what did I find? I found a disaster! I found an industry that is filled with misleading, deceptive and outright lying advertising. I've researched other industries before but I have to admit this has been one of the worst I've seen. I didn't find a single company that was truthful. Every single business in this business distorts their own results to make themselves look better and try to word things to make it sound like something else. It was a nightmare to figure out the truth. I'm genuinely surprised that no class-action lawsuits have been filed against any of these companies! Let me say that independent testing has been done on other more reputable power strip companies and for these companies and their competitors, the actual specs do not match up to what's published on the box! It's crazy that there isn't a government agency that hasn't stepped in and put all these power strip companies in line. I guess not enough people have made enough noise... THIS HAS GREAT PUBLISHED SPECS On the other hand, the published specs on this Amazon product are awesome, relative to the price. The only problem like I said is that given the reputation of the industry, I truly wish that an independent party would test this. It would be extremely helpful. This product has extremely great specs but I doubt its veracity. Other factors that lead me to this doubt is the build quality of this unit. The unit isn't particular sturdy and has a cheap plastic feel. It's hard to plug and unplug cords into this. Sometimes, plugs will need to be forced in or just simply impossible. And, although I can deal with the powerful green light that other reviewers complained that it prevents them from falling asleep, I agree that it's a little overwhelming - a major design flaw. CONCLUSION I'll get right to the point and tell you what I thought of this product. (I know you are all busy.) So, how is this surge protector? I THINK it's darn good! The technical specifications that are listed in the product description (for both the 8 foot and 10-foot cord versions) are pretty amazing. This has the lowest UL certified clamping voltage possible. Its surge rating is 4320 which is one of the highest I've seen so it's going to last a long time. It's EMI/RFI filters eliminate 75 dB of noise, which is a lot. The highest that I've actually seen even among devices that were 3 times more expensive. It also has an LED indicator that tells you when any of the 3 power lines are broken. I know that most of you, guys have no clue what I'm talking about but trust me that the specs on this are wonderful. Better than $60 surge protectors! No kidding. It also looks nice, I have to say (besides the green light). And, it seems that this is all confirmed to be true by one of the highest Amazon ratings of 4.7. It's the perfect surge protector so, why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? HERE IS THE BUT... 1. The build quality is below average. For example, you have to occasionally force plugs into the outlets. They don't go in smoothly like other surge protectors and I find it a bit annoying. It also makes me wonder about the build qualities of other things inside the surge protector. For example, is the important MOV inside the device securely attached to its wires? (If it isn't, it could fry your equipment.) This leads me to my next point. 2. I wish a thorough field test was performed on this product. I know that this is rarely done. Surge protectors are rarely field-tested by an independent 3rd party so I really can't hold this against AmazonBasics. But, it would make me feel extremely safe to know that the specs that this product claims to have are actually true. The UL certification just isn't enough in my opinion for surge protectors. 3. Bright Green Light. Some people have complained about the very bright green light that tells you that the surge protection is working. This is THE biggest complaint (forget about whether it actually protects your equipment). I agree it's bright but I don't think it's a big deal. In an office, it won't matter. If it's in a bedroom, I would just stick it under the bed then. Problem solved. Even if I did find the green light annoying, I would still buy this surge protector because it's that much better than anything else out there in this price range. No question. When do you ever really find a product that has awesome specs AND has a great price? It's a rare find so pick them up fast if you can. *After some thinking, I docked off 2 stars because I really don't know if the published specs are true or not. And, given that all of their other competitors have lied their socks off, there is a high probability that they might have also. I simply don't know. Given that there is so much uncertainty, I have to give it 3 stars until I can get confirmation. Also, remember this fact when you are looking for the best surge protector! DO NOT RELY ON BRAND REPUTATION. Just because I recommended say for example a Tripp Lite model, that doesn't mean all Tripp Lite products are good. In fact, that is far from the case that I've found during my research. A company might make a really good model but the rest of its products might stink. So, you have to research each individual surge protector to determine if it's worthy enough to purchase. I know it's a big pain but that is how it is. ... show more

  • This is my third one.
Size: 6-foot Cord
I really never have any brown or outright outages in my power supply. But I have a great deal of money wrapped up in electronics such as big screen TVs, sound bars, and stereos, along with many work computers and peripherals. I think it is a no-brainer to protect them from the unforeseeable. I currently have very old Power Strip Surge Protectors. So, I decided to upgrade to the latest technology. And at such a reasonable price, why not? My old ones are big bulky and were expensive. These units are sleek and have a low profile. ... show more

  • Needs more spacing between the outlets
Size: 6-foot Cord
Ok, it works. Very noticeable green lights show that it's grounded and surge protecting. Mine sits on the floor under a desk so that the lights are not bothersome, which they could be if at eye level, for instance. They are definitely bright. Allegedly, when the protection light goes off, that indicates the device is no longer surge protecting. The only thing I don't like is that on the row of 5 outlets, I find the outlets are too close together. For a device that it really pretty large, it's disappointing that the outlets were not more widely-spaced. It has 4 keyholes on the back for wall-mounting, but no screws were included. Finding screws that fit the shallow keyholes could be a challenge. ... show more
