Wouldn’t Unlock. Replacement Works Fine.

(Old Review) I was disappointed that I could not open it. I tried to get product support, but it wasn’t to be had, so I sent it back and ordered another. It looks big enough to hold what I wanted it to hold. (New Review) Got the replacement which works fine. You do have to make sure not to put something in the way of the latch inside. It might make it hard to open. The box is large enough to hold a pistol and clips. It’s rugged, but could probably be opened easily enough. It’s mostly so little hands or dumb hands can’t get to things they shouldn’t have, or to make you open something instead of just grabbing it out of a drawer. I got it because I have a 6 year-old nephew running around and don’t want any accidents. ... show more

Great case after you throw away the rubber bumper pads

The box is very well made of heavy duty sheet steel, and has ample space for my gun. The lock combination is easy to program but I found that when I closed the case the locking piece would not mate with the slot on the vertical tab. Manipulation showed that the case could not be closed tightly enough to allow those pieces to match up. Further examination showed that the two rubber bumper guards at the lock end of the case were preventing full closure, no matter how much pressure was applied. Solution: remove and discard the bumper pads. Now the lock works just fine and and keeps the case tightly closed. I'm very pleased with the unit. I gave it 4 stars because of the trouble shooting I had to do and the fact that I had to remove the bumper pads to make it work. ... show more

Great box, but....
Size: XL Style: Combination Lock
This is a sturdy lock box that I used for transporting my 9mm pistol and magazines to and from the range. It was doing great until about the 10th time I used it. On that time when I went to open it it wouldn't open. I mean it partially opened, maybe 3/16" of an inch, but the little mechanism that rotates inside the box wasn't rotating far enough to disengage and allow the box to open. I've read about others having this issue and it kind of had me going for a minute but I realized that maybe if I could get something flat in that small 3/16" opening I might be able to get the piece that causes it to lock to move a 1/8" or so, the box might open. Here's what I did that worked to open it: if you place the box between your knees with the hinge down and the dial and knob to the right, turn the knob to unlock it and shine a flashlight from below you can see the piece that engages to lock it is not completely clearing the slot that it goes into to lock the box. I took a thin plastic ruler and holding it close to my body slid it into the 3/16" opening going out away from my body. Keeping the ruler horizonal I turned the knob slightly (as if I were turning it to lock it, counterclockwise) and it clamped down on my ruler, then, slowly while pushing the ruler in I rotated the knob clockwise as you would to unlock it. It took me 4 or 5 tries but keeping the ruler as high as possible horizontal and slowly sliding it in as I rotated the knob it apparently hit the little piece that rotates in the right spot and pushed it that additional 1/8" needed and the box opened as normal. I'll try to add pictures later to give you a better idea as to what I mean, but it's a nice box, but at the same time I won't lock my pistol in it again. (Or at least i don't think so unless I use a Dremel to remove a little (<1/8") of that piece that engages the slot when the knob is turned that locks it. Also, a thin butter knife may be a better option than where I used the plastic ruler. Just a thought.) In summary, good, sturdy box but it may not open when you most need it. VERY high quality

I already had a similar lock box and needed another. This Amazon version was cheaper, so I thought "why not?" All I can say is wow, I did not expect it to be so much nicer than the $35 box I bought from another seller. Three big things: 1 the metal is clearly MUCH heavier that my other one, and it is noticeably stronger. 2, the lock is much higher quality, I mean the combination. On my other, it doesn't turn "up" so easy, so I have to turn the numbers "down" to get to the combo. On this one, the numbers turn very easy both directions. 3, the included cable is literally 2x as thick as the other box I have. on my other box, the part that secures inside the box is just a knot, whereas on this Amazon box, it is a steel "mushroom" that fits in the side of the box and doesn't take up much room. Oh, and the foam padding is much heavier duty. I am very please. Will NOT be returning this one! ... show more

Good value for vehicle "smash and grab" small item protection while on day trips

I purchased these to provide storage for emergency cash and other items while traveling for day trips. I purchased them to protect against "smash and grab" break-ins to my vehicle, not to protect against professional thieves while the vehicle might be parked outside a hotel. I believe it provides good value for the price for this usage. I do think I could easily get into the box on a workbench by destroying it with standard household tools. The only reason I did not give this a five-star rating is that I purchased two of them at the same time, and neither would open with the factory set 0-0-0 combination. That is, neither would open when I applied all the hand and arm strength I could muster with my fingertips grabbing the top and bottom. I was about to send them back when (as a last gasp effort) I gently pried a thin flat head screwdriver into the narrow gap between top and bottom and twisted - which popped them open. After that the top and bottom separated and reclosed with ease with the lock open. My only conclusion was that they were assembled before the finish was fully cured, requiring them to be pried open when first received. ... show more
