I bought this tool along with some zinc threaded inserts for removable bottom panels on the small boxes I build. It works fine for installing the threaded inserts when used in a hand driver, but note that there's no ball detent for using in the small sub-compact drivers that are popular these days (even though there's a ball detent in the product pic). So for a hand driver, it works fine, but for the sub-compacts with a hex chuck it will just pull out. The bit also works great in drills with a traditional check. That said, with some searching online, you can find 4mm hex bits with a ball detent that will work in every situation. McMaster Carr carries a wide variety of them; I grabbed the 2" ball detent bits (mcmaster# 7397A44). Time will tell if they will last as long as the E-Z LOK bit does, but at roughly 1/4 of the price I can't complain. One advantage the E-Z LOK bit has over standard bits is the wide shoulder. When that part touches the wood, the insert is in at the perfect depth, just below the surface of the wood. But again, with the standard bits being so much cheaper, it's very easy to just set them by eye. So the bit performs as advertised, but 1 star off for value.

The price of these tools is insane. They should cost a couple of bucks each, or E-Z LOK <i>should</i> toss one in with every bag. But they work great. You can chuck it in your drill press if you are worried about keeping the insert super straight, or in a cordless drill if you need to need to do it lying on your back under a desk. I even did a few in a manual handle just to see, and it worked great there too. The hex fits tight enough that you can pre-load the insert onto the tool without it falling off and the shoulder does a good job keeping everything straight and letting you know when to stop (less of a problem with flanged inserts).
