For the reviews about grilling ON it, it is NOT to be used as a grilling surface. It is painted with high temp paint, this the funny smell when it heats up. It is used to perch pots and pans on top of and use the campfire as a burner. If you ate food cooked right on the grates, i hope you are ok.     • Big but good
We bought the XL and it was much bigger than expected. The grill was great for cooking over a campfire. I would not recommend cooking directly on it, but worked grate for supporting our cast iron and kettle. It did smoke and give off a chemically smell when it first heated up. But after a bit in the fire it seemed to go away and any chemicals has burned away. Only worry was that after about 15-20 min over the fire the mesh on the grate seemed to be warping. It wasn’t terrible, but didn’t seem as sturdy as we had been hoping. Overall it worked great for creating a space to cook when using an open flame fire. ... show more

Sturdy little grate, good for supporting pans over a fire. I would not cook directly on it. My only complaint is that the legs don't open evenly but that's not an issue because firepits are rarely level anyway.

My stove fit nicely on it and it was very sturdy. I wish the corners had more mesh in them, seemed like they ran out of the mesh when they welded it, hence 4 stars.

We never put food directly on it to avoid the mess, usually used a cookie tray and some foil, but it was easily one of our most used items on the trip.
