  • My son thinks I took it out of a Tesla ;)
Very nice fit in the 2014 Tacoma. The display and features are awesome and the sound is even better. Don’t buy a new truck to get Apple CarPlay, buy the Alpine ILX-F309. Definitely recommend replacing the factory “paper” door speakers with any aftermarket speakers. The steering wheel button control integration is flawless and easily accomplished with the iDatalink Maestro RR. I chose to self install and with the vertical and tilt adjustments, it was a breeze to get the placement exactly where I wanted it and no longer have to deal with the “Taco Tilt” factory display touchscreen. ... show more

  • Google Maps works very nicely on Satellite View
I installed this myself on my 84 Toyota truck and it fit pretty darn cool. I was concerned to purchased this that the Android Auto would not display the maps well after reading the reviews, and it didn't until I changed it to Satellite View (which I prefer anyways) and works very well visually (just tap on the Control symbol on the bottom left of the Map screen to change it to Satellite view). Everything is working great so far, many options. I have this connected to Alpine external amps and all Alpine speakers and the sound and control of the sound is amazing. Oh, just wish it had a good ol' volume knob! is my only wish so far :-) ... show more

  • Very underwhelming
Final update: Save your money folks. I've tried for months to make this unit work with AA or CP. I called and emailed Alpine for months on end. They are a terrible company selling a flawed device and will do nothing to rectify the situation. Absolutely avoid this unit at all costs. Without the headlining features working properly this is a 480p screen and standard radio. You can get that in a really nice package for $300 or less. Original: I understand this product is now quite a bit older, however, for the going price of “way higher than any other head unit of this kind” It’s sort of underwhelming. For example it lacks customization outside of UI tint and favorites. I can’t find any firmware updates, so probably never will get better software wise. No navigation built in, which is mostly fine since inbuilt nav is usually trash, but the option would be nice. Maestro compatibility is really the reason to get this over the cheaper Halo9, so with that connected you'll get a more OEM style experience. That’s just the software... Hardware is where I get kind of bummed. The screen has poor vertical viewing angles and overall very poor color. I suspect the CarPlay complaints are actually due to poor viewing angles + poor color reproduction. The default UI is deep black with hints of color so you don’t really notice the poor quality until you pop into richer graphics. Besides that, the resolution is also bad for 9”. If your install is further away it might be ok, but in my compact it’s up close and pixelated. Touch screen responsiveness is quite good but the “brain” fan kicks in quite fast to deliver such performance. Install is pretty lame compared to some other floating screens. Every little thing is screwed and bezeled with a fragile looking connector and tight fitting plastic clips. You have to leave a fair amount of space to get your hands, tools, and screws in between the unit and the dash. The lack of easily removable screen is annoying. I suppose if you were to leave your car parked in a sketchy place for an extended period of time, a screw driver would make it “removable.” While I like the floating nature I do wish it could be fitted more tightly or had a mechanism to fill the gap between HU and dash. It's hard to get a clean OEM style look. My conclusion is the same as others: CarPlay/AA is the backbone of this unit - it has next to no other inbuilt features besides radio + HDMI. No maps, no wifi for it's own multimedia, etc. Since CarPlay cannot display in it's highest fidelity on this garbage screen the unit has significantly less value. Either that or it's a software bug. I called and emailed several times about this issue and they constantly reassured me it's not a bug... so it's a garbage screen plain and simple. ... show more

  • Tons of features. Better than what the factory can offer.
Installed in 2014 Silverado. This thing does so much I haven’t been able to play with it all yet. Install took less than an hour (familiar already with disassembly of dash). Wiring was straight forward. If you plan on adding backup camera, HDMI video device, sat radio, subs ... etc. it comes with all the wiring (except sat receiver), so run it all during initial install to where you want it to save time later. Was initially hesitant because of price, but glad I did. Tired of generic ones crapping out. Carplay seems like factory. Completely satisfied so far. ... show more

  • Universal Floating Head Unit. Great sound.
Nice head unit that can be universally installed into almost amy vehicle. I installed into a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. Some vehicles could have issues with the screen blocking buttons or air vents. So, check your dash to see what it could block. Unit is very stable in the dash. I could not move it, once installed. Alot of sound customizations available. Wired ODBII connection allows you to display vehicle information on the screen. A nice feature, but i didnt get much use out of it beyond the first few minutes of using it. The biggest issue i had with the unit was the lack of a volume knob. My vehicle does not have steering wheel controls (which would have solved this issue). So I found myself fumbling on the screen trying to hit the right area to adjust volume, while keeping my eyes on the road. Also, periodically it will take the unit 60-90 seconds to power up. This was very rare, but did occasionally occur. Overall i would definitely buy again. Its Alpine, so the sound is outstanding. And it can provide a floating tablet like experience. ... show more

  • Toyota 4runner 2006
Love it! great sound, added a backup camera for a 2006. Android auto works great. Maps are not a problem, i always use it in night/dark mode so no washed out screen. not hard to install if you know what you doing the only thing is kind of a pain to uninstall if when adding a sub when i had to install a sub woofer. ... show more
