  • what used to take 30 minutes now takes a minute or two
This is the first refractometer I’ve owned. Those of us who have made beer or wine generally have heard of one of these items but never used one. The reason why was the cost which has come down. I’m not sure it will totally replace the beer hydrometer the next time I make beer, but it will be put to good use. This simplifies the measuring process greatly. It is auto temperature correcting unlike a hydrometer and is very simple to use. The only extra step you’ll need to do is figure the alcohol percentage as it doesn’t have a scale for that. It's recommended to calibrate this before use. I found that I didn’t need to adjust it as it was already showing zero with distilled water. If it does need adjusting, it comes with a little screw driver and is a simple process of turning a screw. This is a none-powered unit. Simply add a couple of drops of wort to the glass plate, put down the plastic cover and aim at a light source. The eye piece is adjustable for vision and is very easy to focus. What might take 30 minutes with a hydrometer takes no more than a couple of minutes with this. That’s including clean up. A hydrometer is usually very accurate but it needs to be used at a specific temperature. It was always cooling it or allowing it to warm to that exact temperature that took the extra time. Love the box but not so much the foam rubber inside it. This seems to me to be a poor choice to hold it in place for storage. I think a rubberized plastic would be better. Foam rubber can soak up liquid. So, you will want to clean this before putting back in the box. You don't want a stray drop or two of sticky work soaking up on that foam rubber. The eye droppers supplied with it are also rather cheap and a thin plastic that almost look disposable. That's not much of a problem because glass eyedroppers are cheap and I think easier to clean as they can be taken apart. On the whole, this can be a welcome edition to your beer making supplies that you will rely on for years to come. I can’t believe the price on these have become so affordable. ... show more

Impossible to see the meter -- does not allow enough light inside chamber to read.

  • Cleaner, easier, faster, and more sanitary solution
Honestly, I had given up reading ABV for my beers and ciders. It was too much of a hassle, wasted beer, was risking contamination, and just wasn't worth it to me. If anyone asked for ABV, I just guestimated a number. This product changed that. It's small to store, easy to use, and seems reliable and accurate. You just need to sanitize a dropper, drip a couple on the glass, and look through it with a light source on the other end. Easy peesy. Mine was calibrated perfectly from the box and ready to go. The product seems solid, and the included case and dropper is appreciated. ... show more

  • My first refractometer
I've been trying to deal with my country wines using a hydrometer, and it's just been a complete mess. I can't see well enough to take a reading, for one, and it requires pouring out too much liquid to test it properly. I always manage to spill wine everywhere. I don't have to determine ABV% precisely, but I do want to know how dry my wines are and be able to measure the sugar level without spilling wine all over the place. After doing some research, I think this is exactly what I need. There are online calculators that allow you to figure out the ABV% from the before and after readings AND a wort correction value. I'm not making beer, so I don't know if this applies to me or not. Doesn't matter; again, I don't have to be that precise. I love that the scale shows both Brix and specific gravity and that it only takes a few drops for a reading. This refractometer was very easy to calibrate and use, and all the required information and tools come with it in a nice case. I know from my reading that I'll be able to use the before and after fermentation readings to determine the rough alcohol percentage, but I can't do that with what I've got aging now because I didn't take readings before pitching the yeast. Still, I'm looking forward to determining the level of sweetness I prefer in my country wines. The only thing that is a little funky for me is the way the case unlocks. The latch pulls down from the top instead of up from the bottom, like all my other tool cases with this kind of latch do. At first, I thought I couldn't get the case open because I was trying to pull up on the latch. Silly me, I was able to figure it out finally. LOL. ... show more
