Without lab calibrated equipment how accurate is it really going to be. so far it seems to help get a accurate reading. Still probably a good idea to send a water sample into a company for lab quality results.

    • Not 35ppt - don’t waste your time

Prior to this product I would only calibrate with RODI water which is not the greatest for saltwater aquarium purposes since we measure our tanks at 34-35ppt. I first calibrated my refractometers with this in October and discovered mine were a bit too high. Since then I have had a couple slow unexplained coral losses with near “perfect” parameters and haven’t been able to explain it. I did an ICP analysis this week (ATI in Germany) and it came back showing my salinity at 31.2ppt when my refractometers all showed 1.025-1.026 after calibrating with this product. This prompted me to going to a couple local stores to see what their refractometers and digital probes said. All showed my salinity was spot on with my ICP result of 31.2ppt or 1.0235. This product can’t be trusted after this in my opinion. Mine may have been a bad batch, or was sitting in the warehouse for a while…who knows. If you want perfectly calibrated refractometers that you know you can trust, the only way is to make a 35ppt brine solution yourself. Buy a small food scale and measure the salt/water yourself. There is no guarantee any third party solution is accurate and it may cost you your tank. I have since bought a Hanna salinity checker and it aligns with my low salinity ICP test and local stores meters and have since thrown this junk product away. ... show more

If you have one of the $20 or so refractometers I suggest you pick up a bottle. My refractometer was reading high and so my salt level was much lower than I expected, don't make the same mistake, if you've never recalibrated your refractometer do it now! Weeks after getting my tank to 35 ppt, I noticed that this product and my tank both were reading around 32ppt without a water change. That's how I know this stuff works. ... show more

I was amazed as to the quality and accuracy of the refract. One I brought 15 plus yrs ago when keeping spa and Los corals cost me close to 200.00 That hinged plate broke off I got this one tested same water got the exact same reading. Then I tested both with the test solution again both was dead on. I've paid more but didnt hmget any more.
