  • Great accurate device
This Scanmarker Pal Translation Pen is very accurate and super handy. I got it for my 14 yrs old niece who suffers from Dyslexia. Ever since I got this little pal for her I’ve notice some great progress with her independent reading ability and pronouncing words. I am so impressed with how the device functions, it is easy to use, and accuracy on point. I use the device from time to time to translate and learn different languages. One of my favorite features is being able control the speed and how I am able to slow down how fast it reads the text - giving me quite some time to processes it fully. It is durable, convenient, battery life is great, scanning capability is awesome and compass. Such great value for the price. Highly recommended!!! ... show more

  • An amazing tool! 10 stars!!!!
This pen helped my daughter so much! She has been in a resource classroom for ELA (English language art) since 2nd grade. She worked really hard to read but still has some difficulty. She just started high school and her IEP was rewritten to a extreme after a sever head injury. I pushed for her new school to retest her because I knew she was doing better and the resources class setting at her high school didn’t seem fully appropriate for her. She strategizes as well, uses her own supports and her reading skills have improved but they were still not up to grade level, she is dyslexic. They tested her with and without assistive technology. She used the pen in her testing and did far better with it’s use then without. We were able to revise her IEP and she is being moved into the inclusion classroom with technology supports and had the pens use written in to her IEP as well. She was moved back in to AP geography too. This is a huge win for my daughter. I’m so greatful that the pen worked well for her. The pen might not scan the text perfectly every time, but it does what it is intended to do. The blue tooth is nice because she can use it with her wireless ear buds discreetly and still hear what is going on in class, with just one ear buds in. It seems to hold a charge for a long time. I think it’s a great tool for people who have reading difficulties. I wish I would have gotten it for her sooner. She says it helps a lot and makes it easier to keep up and fully understand text when she needs to read. It might be a bit expensive but I think it’s definitely worth a shot of any child struggling with learning differences when it comes to to reading. ... show more

  • Great reading support tool
I'm a special ed teacher at the elementary level. I have typically used a CPen, but saw this one which seemed really similar and was much less expensive. So, I ordered it and different one to try with my students. Its great! It is as easy to use as the CPen and has similar functions. The size is manageable to hold (a little bigger than a fat marker) and I love that it comes with a guide to help my less that nimble students stay in line over the text. It can be set for left or right handed (I'm a lefty) and it's not too awkward as a lefty. You can set the voice speed which is great for the slower processing students. It takes some practice to be accurate in the scanning of text, but when you are, the output is spot on. There are options to store scanned text, wirelessly save to a computer, and voice record (I supposed for oral translation support, but great for someone to take a voice note once they have read the text). The price was great and definitely something affordable for home use. ... show more

  • The Pal. THIS is the best ScanMarker model for the VISUALLY IMPAIRED! Built in speaker!
I purchased the ScanMarker Air after it was recommended by a couple of sites as the best text to speech device for the visually impaired. My mother had A LOT of difficulty with that because it required a smart phone app that was difficult for her to use. She's... wait for it... visually impaired, so having to tap a tiny, poorly displayed "play out loud" button (either on her iPhone or 10" Fire tabled made the entire concept moot. There is no built-in speaker in the Air model. I did some research and found the ScanMarker Pal. This version has a built-in speaker and a display screen that displays a big orange button to tap to get the text to speech process going (see photos in product description). There are plenty of ways my mother can accidentally tap the screen and cause herself confusion, but she can always turn it off and on to get back to the big orange button. For instance, the "screen" area is larger than you might think (there is a non-display area toward the "point" of the pen that has a nearly invisible button that appears to be a "back" button in most instances; it's in the area one normally holds the pen and is easily, accidentally touched. The settings options are unfortunately very few, so there's no real way to prevent her from accidentally, unknowingly winding up on a screen she can't see or navigate. That said, this version may be the best product available for her needs. With practice, she should be able to identify the sender and topic of her postal mail and read hard copies of documents. For our purposes it's pretty good at converting text to speech when the scan is done correctly. Easy to use. Good, adjustable speech volume. It reads text in all caps as individual letters (I guess thinking it's an acronym) which is tedious. It has a plastic guide that will help keep the pen moving straight, but I wish that the guide were a full 8.5" instead of just short of a standard letter width so it could be used to scan across an entire document (probably a packaging consideration). I'm sure it has other ScanMarker functions you can read about elsewhere. ScanMarker would be doing itself and the visually impaired community a huge service by making a "pen" tailored to the VI user. One button to start the text to speech and nothing else. That would be perfect. ... show more
