  • Works well but not the best
The hydrometer works well. It's a nice addition to my bar. Keep in mind that I do not use this for manufacturing alcohol. I keep an infinity bottle where I add pours from each bottle of new whiskey I buy. The flavor is ever evolving and something I would recommend for all enthusiasts. The one thing I have always been interested in, is the proof and how it changes with the addition of new whiskeys. Using a fairly simple equation, I could calculate a rough estimation of the proof. With this hydrometer, I can get a much better idea of what the proof is, or so I thought. The triple glass scale is well made and roughly the same as any other I have owned, but it's limited to a range of 0-20% ABV.This range is considerably lower than what I need for whiskey. It would cover any beer and certain wines. The plastic protective case is just a flimsy rectangular plastic tube that the hydrometer slides into. There is a piece of foam in the bottom and top that keeps it fairly secure. There is a cleaning cloth that's identical to a glasses cleaning cloth. It's very small and nothing special. It also comes with a paper that to help you convert specific gravity to ABV and BRIX. It's fine but also just a small rectangular sheet of paper that looks like it was printed on a home printer in the 90's. Considering that you use it working with liquids, I would have liked to see it made out of a water-resistant material. The 250mL test jar is a simple plastic cylinder. It's not super sturdy, but does it's job well. The measurements are molded into the plastic and can be challenging to read in certain light. The bottle brush for cleaning the test cylinder is a nice addition and I appreciate its inclusion. I would recommend this for a home enthusiast that doesn't need to read high ABV values. ... show more

  • Just what I was looking for
My son has started making mead and I thought it would be a good idea to make some strawberry wine as well. I at first used this to measure my starting ABV to know how much sugar to add to the mix. I compared it with the hydrometer that my son has for his mead kit and it was the same. so I am either assuming they are both accurate, or the same amount off. So far my wine has been sitting for a week "brewing" away. I have had to check it a few times to add nutrients. Each time I do a reading just to make sure I am not adding to much or too little. This has made this a fun little experiment in wine making. ... show more
