  • Great Oven! Here’s an easy way to make it even better.
We have been cooking on a parabolic oven at our off grid cabin for about 30 years. I surprised her with the All American Sun Oven and she loves it. The large capacity swivel rack works great and the oven is very easy to use. We did the pre use treatment and then started baking right away. It heats up fast and the sights make it easy to correctly aim the oven at the sun. It doesn’t get quite as hot as the parabolic oven but it gets plenty hot to bake just about anything and has lots more room. The adjustable leg on the back works and allows the unit to be lightweight, self contained and very portable. However, we found it cumbersome to use and when fully extended the oven becomes very tippy. I threw together a quick and easy solution that makes height adjustment easy and allows for continuous adjustment and much better stability when extended. See photo. It’s just a couple pieces of plywood with hinges and brackets to hold the oven. I had it made by the time the first batch of biscuits came out. If you don't want to bother with the adjustment mechanism all you need is a piece of 2x4 about 8” long between the plywood sheets and you can achieve any angle by standing it up, laying it down and/or moving it closer and farther away from the hinges. Solar cooking is amazing. The All American Sun Oven is awesome and an excellent choice for longtime solar users like us and It is so easy to use it is great for beginners as well. So far we have made hard boiled eggs with no water, fried bacon, cooked biscuits, baked cookies, and the best baby back ribs I ever tasted. ... show more

  • Built to (over) tilt!!
We've found the American Sun Oven to be a mixed bag. First, the design does not incorporate enough forward tilt to accomodate lower sun angles of late fall through early spring (here in central New Mexico). During mid-winter, we must stack boards beneath the adjustable tilt rod to raise the back about 4 inches during peak afternoon sun. As some other owners have noted in their reviews, the oven is unstable when tilted forward - even when just on the last adjustment settings. Thus, tilting it far more forward can't be done unless there's something heavy placed on the tilt bar stand... we must use 2 rocks, roughly 3" thick x 4" wide x 10" long, placed on either side of the stand base, to keep it reasonably stable. As such, it's likely that - sooner or later - the whole oven will fall forward during adjustments, and food within the oven can be spilled. Awkard to say the least. Second, under the best of conditions, highest temperature achieved in our experience is only 360 degrees, even under midday summer sun. My previous sun oven was a home-made model that consistently reached 400 degrees F, even during winter, and during those years I was living on the North Dakota/Saskatchewan line. The builder of that oven understood how to capture low angle sun and do so without the oven tumbling forward. The oven was not nearly as compact as this Am. Sun Over and was cumbersome to assemble and disassemble, and I sold it before purchasing the latter, which I now much regret. Otherwise, it works reasonably well. The quick set-up is nice. Durability is not great, given the propensity to tilt, accidents are bound to happen & it gets beat up especially if it's set up on a table of some sort, ps - for the asking price, couldnt a couple bubble levels be incorporated into the food tray?? ... show more

  • The American Sun Oven is ideal for emergency preparedness
l live in Florida where hurricanes threaten to take down the power grid from time to time. In 2004 a few hurricanes passed through and we lost power for several days. Since then I've been gradually preparing for another power loss by slowly buying items I will need during a power outage. I'm retired on a fixed income, so I have to prepare slowly and wisely. Yes, I also have propane and wood stoves, but the American Sun Oven is the perfect addition to my inventory of emergency preparedness equipment because all I need for cooking food is the sun! Additionally, it cost little or nothing to operate. I am delighted with the American Sun Oven because it really works. On a sunny day it rapidly reaches 350 - 400 degrees. And, you can easily prepare two loaves of bread and two meals in only a few hours. With the American Sun Oven all I need is the sun. On overcast days I will use my propane stove or my wood stove, but that doesn't happen all that often here in Florida. The American Sun Oven is a quality product. I highly recommend it. If properly cared for, it will last for many years into the future. Here are some common sense recommendations: - Don't try to use the oven on windy days. If you do, the reflectors might wobble or your oven might slide out of alignment. - Before first use, wipe out the oven with vinegar. This will reduce the chances of your first meal tasting a bit metallic or plastic. - If you're a tenderfoot, don't expect the oven to be as convenient as the oven in your kitchen. It takes a little more effort. ... show more

  • Great for cooking, but poor quality
I honestly want to give this oven 5 stars. It's easy to use and makes great tasting food. We've loved everything we've cooked in it so far. I had never had any experience with solar cooking before, and this oven made learning how to do it fun and fast. It really was perfectly designed for people who have never done this before. It also holds a decent temperature really well, even in cloudy weather. However, it is not worth $400. One of the alignment clips fell off and one of the screws on the door came loose and started to strip the wood the first time we used it. It's also a beast to clean, especially since bumping the door even a little bit can cause the screws to pull loose. For what it costs, I would have expected much better quality. I hope it holds out a few years before it becomes unusable due to all of the screws pulling out. ... show more
