  • Good laptop overall, have not had a chance to fully run it through the wringer yet
Good laptop overall, have not had a chance to fully run it through the wringer yet. Looks like it came without the heat sink for either one of the M.2 SSDs and the second slot doesn't even have a screw I can use to mount the drive, I had to buy one. Is there a thermal heat sink that can be used with this/should have been there? ... show more

  • Great Gaming laptop
Im gonna start things off with saying that the negative reviews are a little too harsh on this gaming laptop. I was skeptical when i bought it, but it did not disappoint. It looks great, and feels great, and i had no problem with the laptop overheating or the fan sounding too loud. Its pretty easy to adjust the laptop to your liking too. It has all sorts of different colors you can pick for the keyboard lighting and alienware logo, which was a nice feature. You can change fan speed etc etc. It has tons of ports for you to use. The touchpad is out of this world amazing. The keyboard feels good. The screen looks great. Ive only had this laptop for 2 days, but my first impression is that i love it. Like i said, i was skeptical because of the reviews on here, but it turned out to be a top end, powerful, gaming laptop. I will keep this review updated if i run into any issues. With that being said, there may be better options for the price (Lenova Legion Y740, as mentioned in a seperate comment) but this laptop will not disappoint. If you end up buying this laptop, you will have made a good choice. Alienware is known to be expensive for the hardware that you buy, but Dell is reptiable brand that has been around for awhile, and im assuming that theyd have good customer service if there was an issue ... show more

  • Six months later, all hell breaks lose. Beware - I fixed the issue but ?
REVISED AGAIN: After finishing the transfer of files, I put the laptop back together, was very careful with connections, to make sure everything was the way it was supposed to be. Fired it up and it worked. I ran a bunch more tests and diagnostics, etc. Even the windows logs said nothing was wrong or for that matter; anything even happened! Not sure what to say, but I am glad I have a HD reader, it saved a ton of hassle. Last word: Not sure what to think of this. Besides this, it has been a beast, and has performed well. But 6 months in and I am tearing the computer apart to make it work??? If it was a 500 dollar computer, sure... it is not. So take this for what it is worth. REVISED: Today I went to log on to my computer and it froze at the loading screen. After a bunch of hassle I finally get the windows screen. The D: drive is now missing. Have no idea why. After Bios, boot setup, running diagnostics, etc. I took the secondary drive out, and I have a drive reader. Its perfect. Nothing wrong with it at all. I am now transferring all my important files to another drive just for safe keeping. For this expensive of a laptop, to have an issue like this just 6 months in... you might want to look elsewhere. I will update this as I go along, but the transferring is taking forever. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I have been searching for a laptop that can handle Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and play a few games too. I have been using this laptop for a week and it is outstanding. Most of the builds I found were similar but had something I didn't like or was missing a key component not to mention they were easily priced 200-300 more. REVISED: Heating is a serious issue with this laptop. Even just surfing the next, the fans will kick on and the bottom heats up. I bought a fan cooling system to go underneath and that has helped a lot. The performance so far is excellent, but boy does it get hot quick. I needed: A great processor, and the i7 that is in this machine does a great job (so far). Easily took care of Photoshop files, didn't even flinch when I was scrubbing on 1080p videos. Dual hard drives. The SSD boot disk is just what I needed and the 1TB storage drive was a must with videos, games, programs I have to load. The graphics card is what I have in my desktop so needless to say, its more than I needed but it is real nice to have. The 16GB RAM was a bit disappointing, but in the next year I will upgrade to 32GB. All the extra's like customizing your keyboard color, metal plating on the cover, the design is outstanding, and just the overall speed is what I was looking for. The only CONS would be that it gets warm, and when I was rendering a video, boy did it get warm. The fans are good, and when they kick on it cools off almost immediately. But another CON is the fans can get pretty loud. See note above, had to buy a cooling system... the heating is an issue. Other than that it is a purchase I feel very comfortable with, bought the 4 year warranty with it so I have worry free computing over the next 4 years. ... show more

  • Revised review(update)
Recently I wrote a pretty bad review for this computer and it was mainly cause I was pretty frustrated with one aspect of the computer that was mainly cosmetic. I admit that I was wrong for harshly judging this computer on such a small and trivial thing. That is completely my bad and I accept I have made a mistake, getting past that small aspect of the computer, this laptop for the past several weeks has gone above and beyond anything I have ever experienced. The graphics on this computer are absolutely phenomenal, it’s got a slight heating problem but not as bad as anyone really says, this computer is a workhorse that can and will handle anything you have to throw at it. I have been gaming on this laptop for a short amount of time but any game I decide to play looks and runs spectacularly. With my apologies for the previous review, I would highly recommend this computer to anyone who is going to be doing some serious gaming. This laptop is expensive but oh my goodness it is so worth it and you will not be disappointed. ... show more

  • Jury is still out....
First of all, this laptop is one of the sleekest, most streamlined 'gaming' notebooks I've ever seen. It feels solid and the screen, keyboard, and overall aesthetics are brilliant. The fans can be a bit loud when the system is under load but that is to be expected with any gaming laptop. Be aware of Windows Updates pushing firmware (BIOS) updates - while performing a "Windows" update, my computer hung during a BIOS update causing the fans to not run and the power button (even holding down for 7-10 seconds) to not respond. I had to (with Alienware/Dell tech support on the phone), remove the bottom cover and disconnect the battery. We were able to get it properly updated but we aware. I will post more as I own it longer than 10 hours. ... show more
