  • Very happy with this product!
I received this product and have been using it quite regularly. It is easy to set up as you just need to have a good ledge to attach it too. It winds up my loose skeins of yarn very nicely and is exactly with I needed. It is made of plastic but it feels very durable and well made, so I anticipate this lasting forever. The color is super cute, compared to the nicotine yellow and red one I have somewhere, so these colors were a huge welcome. Of course, given it’s shape it’s not the easiest thing to store because of its bulkiness but it’s really not an issue. Overall, it functions as it should, and I haven’t had any issues. It has made my yarn wall look so much neater and organized as now I have these little yarn cakes instead of loose falling apart skeins and tangled piles of doom. I recommend this product and believe it is priced accordingly. ... show more

  • Excellent basic yarn winder
I tested this yarn winder on over a dozen skeins, and it did great on all of them! I wound cakes of wool, cotton, and acrylic yarns, and thicknesses including fingering, dk, worsted and bulky. All came out evenly, and I didn't have any issues with the cake popping off the winder which has happened with other yarn winders I've used in the past. The yarn winder is easy to assemble and clamps securely onto the table. The post with the yarn feeder is flush with the table, which also helps with stability. I tried winding both from a yarn swift and re-winding messy balls of yarn, and all worked perfectly. The only thing that was a little odd to me was that the crank turns counterclockwise, whereas the older yarn winders I've used in the past wound clockwise. But it's easy to get used to that small change. All in all, it's a good basic yarn winder that I'd definitely recommend to anyone starting out with knitting or crochet. ... show more

  • It winds yarn
This is my first ever yarn winder. Ever since I was a child (50 years ago) if I had yarn that needed to be wound into a ball I just did it by hand. I’ve only ever bought yarn that comes in skeins. And I just pull from the middle until the skein is very floppy. Then I wind up the last little bit into a round ball if there’s any left. I never even knew such a thing as a yarn winder existed! Since I really don’t need one, but realize it could come in handy, I decided this entry level one would be right for me. Having no knowledge of what a great winder can do, I naively think that this one is pretty neat. It clamps to the table. Fortunately my table is within the max size range that it has, which is 1 and 7/8 inches. (See first photo.) The directions are easy to follow and it’s easy to assemble. Very simple to start winding. I started out slow and methodical and it worked very well. Then for the review, I decided to test winding as fast as possible. It was a blur! It seemed to be working well until I noticed an unevenness to the blur. I stopped and saw that a section of the yarn hadn’t stayed on the ball and was flopping around as it spun. My bad. I unwound back to that spot and restarted. I decided that this winder can’t handle super fast speeds, so I maintained a more moderate speed and the rest of the yarn wound up very nicely. Also, I did not hold the incoming yarn at all. I allowed the winder to do its thing without help. It did very well. I do think that if I want a more “solid” cake, I could hold the incoming yarn to adjust the tension and learn what speed of turning works best. The second and third photos are of my finished ball. It feels very light and fluffy. You can see that the last layers of yarn are loose and uneven. I believe that is due to reaching the max capacity of the winder. It’s supposed to hold 4 ounces of yarn and mine maxed out with this 3.5 ounce skein. Very possibly due to me not holding the tension of the yarn. Maybe with a tighter tension I will be able to fit more yarn into a tighter cake. This is obviously not meant to wind large skeins of yarn. But for the instances where a partial skein has become unwieldy or you have to rip apart some work and have a bunch of loose yarn, this will be nicer than just rolling it into a ball by hand, And I think it will be sufficient for winding yarn that comes in “hanks” instead of skeins, as long as the hank doesn’t exceed 4 ounces. ... show more

  • Good winder for small hanks or left over yarn.
The media could not be loaded. This yarn winder is quite nice. It is quiet compared to others that I have used, which is nice if you are watching tv while winding like I do. The plastic feels good, doesn't feel cheap. The winding process is nice & smooth. Now I didn't pay attention when I got it as to how much it can wind. This is definitely not for medium/large sized skeins/cakes in one go. They would need to be split into 2 cakes. This is great for small skeins or hanks, or from leftover yarn from a project. In the video I am rewinding a Yarnbee Sugarwheel cake from hobby lobby. And whenthe yarn catches at the is because I trying to see how much it could wind & has nothing to do with the winder. ... show more

  • Not great!
Yes, easy to set up, but feels like poor quality/rather cheaply made. Not impressed.

  • Works well, but I wish there was a better tension system
This is a great starter cake winder. It does what it's supposed to, and does it decently. My only real complaint is the tension rod. The instructions that came with it weren't very clear on how specifically you're supposed to use the tension rod, so I assumed you just string the yarn through the loop, and found out looking at the listing later that that's how it was intended. However, it doesn't create any real tension unless you also hold the yarn in your fingers, so you're basically the one making the tension. I don't really care for this, because my tension might change over time, and it's not very fun feeling sometimes scratchy yarn constantly feeding through my fingers. Other winders I've seen have built in tension controls, and I wish this one had that. Because of the tension rod design, I also had issues with the yarn coming free of the rod if I didn't hold the yarn in a particular position. Trying to get it back into the loop when it's already partially caked is frustrating. Overall it does what you expect it to do, but requires more babysitting than some other winders might need. ... show more

  • Great item worth the price
Works wonderfully straight out of the box for the yarn I've spun. I prefer the cake to winding in a ball.
