The reviews for this had numerous people complaining that the hatch door at the base of the feeder wouldn't close all they way, and seed/fertilizer would still fall out even if the handle was in the off position. Now I'm reasonably handy, have tools and work in the trades so maybe that made this easier for me. This item came fairly quick for free shipping and assembly was a breeze. All the hardware was there and instructions had decent pictures to cross reference. Once I got the whole thing together and back upright from putting the tires on I moved the handle forward to close the feeder. And just like everyone said it would not close all the way. I looked at if for about 2 seconds and said DUH!!!. The two screws that hold the handle assembly together are not going through perfect holes. The holes are about an 1" or so long. They are adjustable and so I loosened two bolts and put the handle in the closed position while applying a little pressure the hatch door closed all the way. I tightened the bolts back up and the unit works like a dream. So once again don't believe what you read sometimes because you don't know what type of person is putting these units together. The packaging for the nuts and bolts didn't make a lot of sense. They weren't organized by use, or type of hardware. Installation was okay - had to go back and redo a couple of the steps as they weren't real clear. (no words, just pictures). First issue was the insert to keep bigger chunks from blocking the throat actually causes bridging with lighter seeds. Removed that immediately. If you add in something inert and heavier to help push the seed through or have a mix of seed (like a CRP mix), the agitator isn't big enough to keep the mix even and the lighter seeds still float to the top. The agitator is just a hairpin cotter pin. Fine for breaking up a chunk of fertilizer, but not for keeping the mix even in the hopper. The spreader favors the left side, since the throat and opening of the bin is located over the front half of the spreader plate and the mix is thrown off of the plate before the plate can complete 3/4 of a revolution and get the seed to the right side of the seeder. It took longer than necessary to cover 8 acres and the cover is not even. This spreader might work fine for throwing down ice melt or salt, but not for anything in the field where the distribution has to be even. ... show more

First off, the way Agri-fab packed this product is horrible. Other than a couple of pieces of cardboard around the main frame, everything was in shambles when I received it. The spreader plate was busted in 3 sections, and the inside of the bucket was gouged and marred. For $369.00 I would have expected better packaging. One call to Agri-fab, and they sent me a new spreader plate. Also, the instructions do not show the 3/8 lock nut and washer (and was not included) that attaches the draw bar to the frame. The bolt is already in place under the gear box from the factory, but no lock nut and washer to fasten it down. The spreader does appear to be well built, and the hopper door operates properly, as it should. We’ll see in time, how it holds up. ... show more

    • Assembly Difficulty
Style: 185 lb. Direct Rod Control Tow-Behind AT...
I am very familiar with Agri-Fabs products, I have the 52” lawn sweeper and 30 gal. Sprayer and had no problem assembling either one of them. This is for the 45-03297 tow able 185 lb broadcast spreader. The assembly instructions are a JOKE, other than “adjusting the control setting” there is not a written word in the manual pertaining to assembly. Of course, they do refer you to their video instruction guide but not wanting to make it too easy for you the parts in the manual are designated with letters, A,B,C etc. The parts in the video are designated with numbers, 1,2,3 etc. First things first, I counted all the parts that shipped with the spreader and made note of the 3 missing bolts and 2 washers which I had replacements for. The actual assembly wasn’t too hard, but if you have a second person to help it would make things easier. The most difficult part was step 8, getting part “AA” (sorry, they don’t give you a name for that part) inserted into part ”S”. It’s a keyed rod end that should slip into a hole in “S”. The hole is too small, so I had to take a file to it, not wanting to make the hole too large I took care to make it a tight fit. I filed it to the point where a light tap with a hammer got the rod installed. Once I got it in the hole, it operated freely as it should. In conclusion, I’d give the spreader itself a “10”, the missing parts and instructions, both the manual and video, a ZERO. Agri-Fab would be doing themselves a big service if they got someone to review the printed instructions that go out with their products. ... show more

Tried using it to spread sand, it works OK but sand gets caught in the screen and keeps it from flowing. It doesn’t fair job. I used it for salt, and it was excellent. The salt flowed freely through the unit, but you can’t leave any salt in the unit because it will absorb the moisture from the air and harden Overall I’m pretty happy with it ... show more

I had a missing bolt that i had to supply but is minor compared to the weakness of the frame. Do not fill this over 1/2 full of fertilizer. The tongue bent and that caused the door not to be able to close and dumped out fertilizer into a pile. I had to weld two struts to keep it from bending forward and dumping over the front. Works well now but i see the gears are plastic so we will see how long it will last. Very poor cheep construction, ... show more

The primary reason I bought this spreader is for spreading ice melt on our 600' drive. I choose the Agri-Fab 185 lb tow-behind spreader as there just aren't any good options for this purpose. I'm sure it works quite well as a seed/fertilizer spreader in fair weather, but that is not what I needed it for. What I need is something to spread ice melt and sand on a long icy driveway during a Maine winter. The assembly instructions were so so. I've seen better instructions, but I've also seen worse. With a little care and by paying close attention one can follow them. The quality control for packaging could be better. I was missing one bolt and net combo. Also the wing nut assembly for the spread rate stop had come undone and had fallen into the bottom of the box. Fortunately, the missing nut and bolt are easy enough to get at my local hardware store. From an ice melt spreader perspective, I doubt it will last more than a couple of seasons and ice melt doesn't dispense at a sufficient rate. One big problem is the grate that is intended to prevent big clumps from clogging the chute. It is plastic and will probably break fairly quickly. It really should be made out of metal. The other problem with the grate is that its holes are too small to allow flaked ice melt to flow through at an adequate rate. At some point, I might switch the grate out with a stretched steel grate that is stronger with larger holes. I wouldn't recommend it for sand unless the sand was pretty dry an not clumpy. Another shortcoming with using this spreader for ice melt is that only one wheel drives the spinning tray. When I drove over icy sections, the drive wheel would slide instead of roll. For the purpose of spreading ice melt, the other wheel needs the option to use a drive pin so that both wheels could help drive the tray. In summary, this isn't the ideal wintertime spreader for ice melt nor road sand/salt mixes, however, there just aren't that many options and the good ones I did find were well over a $1,000 and many of them weren't even available at this time of year or at least not available in the U.S. ... show more

We used this last week to put magnesium chloride down on our dirt road. Pulled it behind the four wheeler. It normally costs us 1200 $ to have oiled. This spreader saved us hundreds of dollars. The quality is good. We had looked for one at all our local stores and could not find one that would hold as much as this one did. No complaints! Hubby who is picky is very happy. ... show more
