First off, the way Agri-fab packed this product is horrible. Other than a couple of pieces of cardboard around the main frame, everything was in shambles when I received it. The spreader plate was busted in 3 sections, and the inside of the bucket was gouged and marred. For $369.00 I would have expected better packaging. One call to Agri-fab, and they sent me a new spreader plate. Also, the instructions do not show the 3/8 lock nut and washer (and was not included) that attaches the draw bar to the frame. The bolt is already in place under the gear box from the factory, but no lock nut and washer to fasten it down. The spreader does appear to be well built, and the hopper door operates properly, as it should. We’ll see in time, how it holds up. ... show more

Agri-Fab has some production quality control problems. The axle on the unit I received was about 6" too short on each side. There was no way to mount the spacer and the wheels and get them properly connected to the axle. With the axle provided, the unit was totally unusable. I spent about 2 hours putting it together (there are no words in directions, just diagrams, so its a pain to figure out which hardware goes where, when to tighten things down, and what aligns with what five steps later) and another 1/2 hour taking it apart and putting it back in the box. Amazon is taking it back tomorrow. Overall, the frame is solid, the hopper box is solid, and the tires are big and appear to be heavy duty (if only they had fit on the axle properly). On the downside, the open/close plate at the bottom of the hopper is plastic and barely adjusts to closed, so once you start using it, there is likely to be some leakage (I had planned to spread ice melt and I'm not sure the mechanism would have fully closed when in use), there is cheap metal grate that doesn't really secure inside the hopper, and the so-called cover is thin plastic with elastic like you might put over leftovers. I ordered this specifically to pull behind an Utility Vehicle for fertilizing / seeding food plots. The first one I received was missing numerous parts (3 bolts, 2 washers, 1 wheel pin, 2 nuts and the hitch pin). Since all the parts are in a sealed plastic bag, I was dumbfounded that it could be missing so many parts. One nut or bolt (ok) two items (maybe), but for it to be missing all of the foregoing items, appeared to be an absolute failure of quality control and/or a complete disregard for customer satisfaction. However, I really needed to get my food plot finished so I went to Lowes and purchased the replacement parts. $9.52 later I was back to assembling the spreader when I found that the axel was off-center and the wheels would not mount properly. I opened to gear box to see if I could adjust it and found the plastic components in pieces. Needless to say I was upset. So, I contacted Amazon Customer Service. They were great. They immediately shipped a replacement and had UPS come and pick up the defective spreader at my door. I have received the second spreader (which had all the parts and was not broken). I plan to use it this weekend and depending upon its performance I will update this review. **** Update - I am raising my review to 4 stars. I can't give it 5 stars because of the prior fiasco, but I used the spreader this weekend and I can say that it performed pretty well. I was spreading fertilizer on recently disced ground that was pretty rough. I was worried that the spreader would tip over on the uneven ground, but it rolled well. The plastic shield around the gear box got knocked off at one point, but it worked fine without it this time. I will re-grease and put it back on for my next job. Also, like some of the other reviewers have said, I was able to adjust the two bolts on the spreader control handle to make sure that the door completely closed. The reviews for this had numerous people complaining that the hatch door at the base of the feeder wouldn't close all they way, and seed/fertilizer would still fall out even if the handle was in the off position. Now I'm reasonably handy, have tools and work in the trades so maybe that made this easier for me. This item came fairly quick for free shipping and assembly was a breeze. All the hardware was there and instructions had decent pictures to cross reference. Once I got the whole thing together and back upright from putting the tires on I moved the handle forward to close the feeder. And just like everyone said it would not close all the way. I looked at if for about 2 seconds and said DUH!!!. The two screws that hold the handle assembly together are not going through perfect holes. The holes are about an 1" or so long. They are adjustable and so I loosened two bolts and put the handle in the closed position while applying a little pressure the hatch door closed all the way. I tightened the bolts back up and the unit works like a dream. So once again don't believe what you read sometimes because you don't know what type of person is putting these units together. The primary reason I bought this spreader is for spreading ice melt on our 600' drive. I choose the Agri-Fab 185 lb tow-behind spreader as there just aren't any good options for this purpose. I'm sure it works quite well as a seed/fertilizer spreader in fair weather, but that is not what I needed it for. What I need is something to spread ice melt and sand on a long icy driveway during a Maine winter. The assembly instructions were so so. I've seen better instructions, but I've also seen worse. With a little care and by paying close attention one can follow them. The quality control for packaging could be better. I was missing one bolt and net combo. Also the wing nut assembly for the spread rate stop had come undone and had fallen into the bottom of the box. Fortunately, the missing nut and bolt are easy enough to get at my local hardware store. From an ice melt spreader perspective, I doubt it will last more than a couple of seasons and ice melt doesn't dispense at a sufficient rate. One big problem is the grate that is intended to prevent big clumps from clogging the chute. It is plastic and will probably break fairly quickly. It really should be made out of metal. The other problem with the grate is that its holes are too small to allow flaked ice melt to flow through at an adequate rate. At some point, I might switch the grate out with a stretched steel grate that is stronger with larger holes. I wouldn't recommend it for sand unless the sand was pretty dry an not clumpy. Another shortcoming with using this spreader for ice melt is that only one wheel drives the spinning tray. When I drove over icy sections, the drive wheel would slide instead of roll. For the purpose of spreading ice melt, the other wheel needs the option to use a drive pin so that both wheels could help drive the tray. In summary, this isn't the ideal wintertime spreader for ice melt nor road sand/salt mixes, however, there just aren't that many options and the good ones I did find were well over a $1,000 and many of them weren't even available at this time of year or at least not available in the U.S. ... show more

Seems pretty solid, however it was missing parts, so I will need to replace those on my own. Few bolts, nuts and cotter pins. Since I need to replace on my own, I can't give this more than two stars, for the price I paid. Including photo of missing parts.

Product is well built. Instructions could be a little better. Steps 1-10 are pictures only. The important step 11 has a picture and text. Sure enough, when you assemble it, the gate does not close all the way. That is, not until you do the last step, #11, the calibration adjustment. Then it closes perfectly. I like the fact that most of the assembly is already done for you. When you finish assembly, be sure to tighten the pre-assembled parts. On step 2, you have to loosen the V bracket bolts so you can angle the second set of V brackets used in step 8. ... show more
