  • Very nice when finished but has many difficult sections when assembling
Disclaimer: I have built a good number of these generic brand building bricks. I have built a high number of the big "L" brand as well. My attic is filled with hundreds of empty boxes and I am rotating many of these as well so have different models being displayed. I am also redecorating my home and my wife is complaining about the amount of room my brick sets are taking up, especially these large sets. This one is nearly complete as I have not had as much time to spend on it. I usually spend about 5 or 6 hours on weekends, as long as I am not working and about 1 hour when I am off work. With all the redecorating, rearranging and some home repair going on before the winter holidays, time is not something I have any longer. Because this one is almost complete, I am hoping to have it finished before Thanksgiving. This is not an easy set to assemble. I am used to axles and regular axle gears moving virtual "pistons" or turning the wheels with the steering wheel. This has pistons to move the Excavator so it can actually be "played" with. I wish this kit had instructions for those of us who did not want to put in the radio control but have not looked ahead to see if that is at the end. Bags are separated to build in smaller blocks which is helpful, especially when you do not have a lot of room to organize and sort over 1,000 parts. I hope the Excavator bucket is able to be held into position. The tracks seem to move correctly unlike some of the tanks I have built. This is a good thing and a lot of thought went into the design. Instructions are fairly written and the images are well done. Most of the pieces are easy to see where they go but a few places it is difficult to understand. I have rebuilt some steps several times to get it correct. Most of the time I find the step was not put in the correct area a step or two later so have to remove all the steps to redo the one. one step forward yet 3 steps back. The color saturation also makes some pieces difficult to see what size exactly is needed. Pieces fit together tightly. This is mainly because of the soft plastic. I am using a hair dryer with low to medium heat setting to warm the plastic and also a hobby plastic mallet to "hammer" pieces together. I have not needed to use any white glue so far, that is a good sign. I will update as soon as I finish and have time to examine the finished build. ... show more

  • The excavator is fantastic - but not for 8 year olds
Addshiny 13112 MOC Technology Excavator This is a fantastic, but complex kit. On the Amazon page, the pictures indicate ages 8+. HOWEVER, the box I received indicates 14+. This kit is definitely NOT for 8 year olds. A very advanced and patient 10 year old might be able to do this with assistance, but my recommendation is at least 12, and only then for a patient and meticulous 12 year old. The kit itself is great - and value priced. This would make a great gift. This kit contains 6 motors and the remote unit. The gearing works well - no binding. The motors easily drive the gearing. The build itself is fun, trying to see exactly how the parts will eventually function. The instructions are fairly clear, but there are some difficult parts - this is for an experienced builder. The 6 motors control: left tread, right tread, upper rotation, arm raise, arm extend, and bucket articulation. Here's some things that were great: * I love that the motors and remote are included in the kit. Many kits support optional motors, but for this kit, they are integral and supplied. * There are 2 motor control boxes. (Each controls up to 4 motors.) In other kits, these boxes require batteries. In this kit, the boxes are rechargeable, using a USB cable. * The mechanisms themselves function smoothly/properly. * For 2 of the high stress parts, they used a special carbon-fiber axle. I've never seen this before in any other kit. * The stickers aren't overdone, and none of the stickers span parts (I hate that!). The kit isn't perfect, but given the overall value, I'm still going with a 5-star rating: * The remote can only talk to one control box (4 motors) at a time. I've found that turning off/on the remote will switch to the other control box (the other 2 motors). The instructions aren't clear about how this works. * One of my drive motors has flipped polarity. So to drive both treads in the same direction, I have to hit the up button on the left and the down button on the right (or vice versa) - this is weird and confusing. * The large motor has a two part casing. I couldn't get the technic mounting holes in the proper position until I realized I had to separate and rotate the casing 90 degrees. * The stickers don't adhere well enough. In a couple of places there's a rounded edge, and the stickers start to peel up. This was true even after I used alcohol to clean the parts before applying the stickers. * It's a bit tricky to route the wires properly. ... show more
