  • It's impressive!
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4000-Series Style: Notebook only
I received mine just a couple of days ago but I love this little machine! I had been using an Acer Aspire with an Intel i3 processor previously, the same laptop that my son has. Unfortunately his took a bath in a large glass of Orange Juice and so we had an issue to deal with. So I bought this one and he is now using my old one. It's still a nice machine for him with the upgrades I had done. So the first thing I did after verifying that my new laptop did in fact work right out of the box was to turn it over and take the back off of it. I then added a stick of DDR4 RAM to up it to 16GB. I also installed a 2TB 2,5" SSD in the bay (nice of Acer to include the hardware). I do wish this machine had come with a larger M.2 SSD but I can live with the 256GB. These days adding external storage is relatively inexpensive and I own the Oyen Digital Mobius Pro External Drive Enclosure so storage isn't a problem. I also miss the optical drive but own several desktop burners and will just add one to an enclosure and connect via USB. I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on the display for gaming but I have found it to be plenty good for watching movies. I have watched a few and the display is an upgrade over my old laptop. The speakers on this suck as they all do but I connect to my desktop DAC/Tube Amp/Speakers/Headphones so no concern about the onboard sound. I haven't found any problems with the track pad but prefer to use a mouse. The keyboard is responsive and feels nice to the touch but I have ordered a silicone keyboard protector which I know I will love because my wife has one on hers and it's really nice. I also ordered a protector for the trackpad hoping to keep it from developing wear spots from my fingers as I will use it from time to time. The location of the various connections is ideal for me as the headphone jack is in a better location that previously and I run that out to my DAC at the desktop. The ethernet cable connects on the opposite side as well so I no longer have both ethernet and RCA to deal with on the right hand side where I need to route it around to the other side. And I had to make certain that any laptop I considered even HAD an ethernet cable jack because I saw several which didn't. You might want to be aware of that, too. All in all I am really digging on this machine. It offers me all that I could hope for in a lightweight, attractive, well built package. I think one could do far worse! ... show more

  • Great budget laptop that sacrifices build quality for performance.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4000-Series Style: Notebook only
For just under $600($560 for the laptop + $30 for an stick of ram), I have a ryzen 5 4500u with 16gb of ram(I put an extra 8 gb stick in mine). This machine is very capable and snappy. I don't care too much about build quality, so the high end cpu for a low price was a no brainer. It can run some games, but don't get your hopes up(platformers and esports titles should fare just fine). Battery life surprised me(5-7 hours of moderate work), and was able to handle 10+ tabs of chrome without breaking a sweat. For working/schooling from home, the 15.6 inch display is nice and crisp, but suffers from a not so bright max brightness(which is livable as long as you aren't outside). In addition, acer included the mounting bracket and sata cable so you can add a 2.5 inch ssd whenever you need more storage in your machine. I did have to remove quite a bit of bloat ware, but it didn't take too long. Overall, I am very happy, as the performance is well worth the price, just make sure to buy a second stick of ram for this laptop, as ryzen performs much better in dual channel. ... show more

  • Unexpectedly great.
CPU: Ryzen 5 3500U Style: Laptop Only
I bought this thing because I had gotten to the point where charging my old one was just becoming a hassle. I ... I'll spare you the details of the old one. I needed a new one, so I looked at what Google said the best computers under $600 were. I saw the rankings, looked around to see, decided on this one after comparing a few things, and I only have one gripe; I have to relearn the keyboard because there's an entire number pad to the right that wasn't on my old one, and it makes me have to relearn my station a little every time I go to place my fingers on the keyboard. Obviously this is nothing in the scheme of things, and doesn't even really count as a gripe. The computer itself... fast. SO fast, especially compared to my last one. I used to have this routine where I would turn the computer on in the morning so I could start the day (homework and all that), then go to the coffee maker, get that going, come back, hopefully it would be ready for me to log in, log in if it is, go back, get the laundry going, grab my cup of coffee and sit down and only have to wait another minute or two for the computer to finish starting up. With this one... I click the button and have no time to lift a cheek off the couch before it wants my password. I type it in, and it's booted and ready before I can take a sip of my coffee. I'm legitimately amazed at how good the picture quality is, how fast it is in general, and how very little time is spent waiting on it to process my typically-simple orders. Even the intense work is done in no time. I keep music playing, I do tons of graphic work, I have videos and classes and all kinds of stuff, and this thing handles it all like a champ. 10/10, would buy again in a heart beat. ... show more
