  • Great value
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
Really happy with this computer. So far we've bought two of the Acer Aspire 5 laptops: this one and a slightly earlier version. Both are regularly used by our family and they work reliably. Acer makes some quality products, and these computers are great value for the money. I would absolutely buy this again. A few notes: The memory can be upgraded, no problem, though you should have some basic mechanical aptitude and a small/precision screwdriver set (you're going to need a Phillips head screwdriver to open the screws on the bottom of the case). I think the original 4gb RAM are soldered to the board, but there is a slot for a second RAM module. You don't have to add a matching sized stick, any size is fine - e.g. you can add an 8gb module as I did. Just be sure to get Notebook/Laptop memory with the right specifications. This version has a plastic lid with a nice finish. ( My earlier version of the Aspire 5 came with an aluminum lid. Both look good, but the aluminum one can get dented if not handled carefully. ) The charger for this version is also slightly different (at the connector / port) than the earlier version of the Aspire 5. This new one has a smaller connector pin. Because of this difference, the two chargers are not interchangeable. ... show more

  • Cuts all the right corners
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
No one feature is exceptional, but the amount of features/quality at the sub-400 price is impressive. ❧ Solid construction, aluminum lid ❧ Modern (at time of purchase) and moderately-well-equipped Ryzen APU ❧ IPS screen with good max and min brightness, even backlight, and acceptable color rendition ❧ Backlit Keyboard with a great layout and good key quality ❧ Large, responsive trackpad with a turn-off option in the function keys ❧ Good cooling solution for the size ❧ User accessible / upgradable parts ❧ Acceptable I/O (USB, HDMI, LAN, headphone jack, kensington) Corners that were cut: ❧ Storage size - 128gb DRAM-less SSD as configured ❧ Win 10 in S mode (I believe Microsoft charges less for the "s" license) ❧ Speakers are truly terrible. I cannot overemphasize how bad they are. ❧ Ram Size - 4gb DDR4 2400 ❧ No card reader ❧ 1 year warranty (remember when things actually had 2 or 3???) ❧ No Mic jack The storage is upgradeable. The included SSD is user-replaceable, and there is also an included space / hardware to add a 2.5" drive. The 4gb RAM is built in to the board, but there is one slot open for RAM. Having filled mine, CPU-Z reports that it is successfully running in dual channel mode (important for APU memory bandwidth). It strikes me that the corners cut are ALL user-addressable. Windows 10 can leave S mode. Ram/storage is upgradeable. Card readers and external speakers/headphones/audio interfaces can be used. The 3350u processor has a manufacturer-configurable TDP, which affects its boost clock behavior. This one seems to be configured to a relatively medium-low power. I have never seen it boost past 3.1ghz (the AMD spec sheet lists a 3.5 ghz max). Fine by me, but worth noting. The cooling solution seems like it could handle more, but it does dump heat primarily beneath it (i.e. into your lap if you are using it as a laptop literally). I don't really blame them for dialing it back for this reason or to hit battery life targets. After adding RAM and storage, I have successfully done some medium gaming at low settings. Civ 6, Life is Strange 2, and the infamously-processor-bound-poorly-optimized Guild Wars 2. All fine, but I would have gotten something more powerful if I didn't have a gaming desktop. My last laptop was from 2009 and lasted me 'til 2021. The hardware on this one should meet my needs for equally long -- all that's left to be seen is if anything randomly breaks between now and then. If any random breakage occurs between now and 2023 I will update this review. ... show more

  • Best in it's price range
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
I'm not an acer fan, as acer was like the hyundai's of the pc tech world in my book, but I needed a laptop for my daughter and this one fit the bill. So far so good, I'd say build quality is fairly decent, it's slimmer than I expected. Performance wise, obviously it's no beast, but it gets the job done. What's really great about this is the fact that the ram is upgradeable to 64GB, but I'll just purchase an 8GB stick to add to it. There is room for a 2.5" SSD. The NVME is also removeable, so while there's no sd card slot, storage is fully expandable in a better way. Having a backlit keyboard with #pad is excellent. Webcam quality is ok, nothing to talk about there, 720p 30fps max, but as mentioned before, gets the job done. Even with only 4Gb Ram, it still ran smoothly despite having several Chrome windows open with multiple tabs. Installed minecraft java edition for her, it was able to play set at 7 chunks render distance, and not very many settings dialed down and still get 60fps (not that she cared about fps), so I still think you may be able to play some titles at 720p maybe medium settings, but i haven't checked it yet. Screen is not bad, viewing angles are quite good and bright enough. The speaker are not loud but audio quality is fairly decent, especially given how slim the laptop is. Your phone may go louder, but it won't scrape your ear canal. Battery life is average I'd say. All in all, this is a laptop that is more expensive than it should be, AS ARE ALL THAT FALL IN THIS PRICE POINT, but definitely compared against all the others I've sifted through, it's the best. In summary, it is because: 1. Ability to upgrade internal nvme storage + add 2.5" ssd 2. As with internal storage, ram isn't soldered on like the other brand laptops and can be upgraded 3. Latest WiFi and Bluetooth technology 4. Backlit keyboard with number pad and fingerprint scanner on touchpad 5. Inclusion of an ethernet port. Especially helpful if you need a stable internet connection. 6. Windows 11 ready 7. Decent display with good viewing angles 8. Decent quad core apu 9. USB-C also available on chassis and overall, decent I/O It's a solid buy if you're looking for a laptop within it's price range at the time of this review. It offers the most features and flexibility vs the competition. ... show more

  • Absolutely amazing for price
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
For $350, I expect a laptop that's basically a piece of junk, and this completely exceeded my expectations. I'm just a college student and don't need anything fancy, and obviously also don't have a ton of money to spend on electronics. I'm more than happy with this computer. I saw some people complain about the screen quality, as well as the speakers and the touchpad, but honestly I haven't noticed an issue with any of them at all. The screen quality is a little less than my old laptop but I don't notice it really, if you're into gaming and stuff it might be annoying but for daily use and movie watching I think it's good, once again you are getting more than what you're paying for in the first place. It's relatively light, has lots of outlets which I always appreciate. The speakers are just fine for me, the loudest I've ever put them is at 50% volume, so in my opinion they're plenty loud enough. The trackpad has never given me any issue so far. The S Mode thing is annoying, but easy to disable, even though I haven't done that yet and honestly might not because I'm just a casual user and it isn't a huge deal to me. All in all, I'm very impressed at the quality, considering how low the price is. This is absolutely the best thing you're gonna find for this price range. I'm really glad that I went with my gut and picked this laptop over the Lenovo one that I was considering. My last Chromebook that I loved and lasted me four years was Acer, and I decided to go ahead and stick with Acer since I trust the brand and they're known for making great durable products for cheap, which is what I wanted. If you're looking for something high end and fancy, this isn't for you, but if you want the cheapest laptop possible with the most capabilities possible, then this is what you want to get. ... show more

  • Cheap and Mighty
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
This was the stupidest and debatably best purchase I've ever made. I decided shopping for laptops was a pain in the you know what, so I found a cheap one with thousands of good reviews and just bought it. No idea about the specs, who would even look at those? And throughout the years, it's been a trusty companion and a lovable piece of trash. The only thing I really wanted was a laptop that worked. And this one worked, guys. After putting up with years of my abusive behaviors towards technology, it may be very broken but guess what? It still works great. So I don't even care if it was a stupid purchase. I'm giving it five stars for perseverance, grit, and loyalty. ... show more

  • Everything I need and more
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
My Gateway laptop has been getting slower and slooowwwwer for a while to the point where it took me (no exaggeration) 15 minutes to boot...and it was getting glitchy besides. I've had Acers before and they've been good machines so I thought I'd give this one a shot. I'm not in the least disappointed. The pros: +The backlit keyboard. I absolutely love it. Yes, the backlighting goes off after a few seconds of non use - but any key will immediately turn it back on. So I just press the Shift key and the backlighting returns. A really neat feature on such an inexpensive computer. +The matte finish screen. I remember when I was searching for my last laptop that I had a terribly hard time finding a matte (non-glare) screen. It seemed that at that time for some inexplicable reason every manufacturer out there had gone to a glossy screen which, to me, creates thoroughly unacceptable reflections. The Gateway I wound up with was one of the very few on the market with a matte screen. So glad this one has it as well. +Flexibility. Apparently it is quite easy to upgrade both the memory and the hard drive. For my uses I don't think I'll need to do either one - but it's nice to know I can if I want to. I've been using a 1TB external drive as my primary storage for some time now, so I just plugged it in and kept on chugging. +Speed. I know I was transitioning from a computer that had become outrageously slow, but I was not prepared for boot times under ten seconds - wow! It's about time that these things finally are operating at speeds they should have been all along. And everything is much faster. It is a true pleasure. +Design. Sleek, clean, not all gimmicked up. And although I read a review or two that said the fan was noisy I think those reviewers got a clunker because mine is super quiet - you can barely hear the fan at all. Certainly not anywhere near as noisy as my previous laptop. The cons: - I do wish it had a DVD drive built in. I know it would have made it thicker, but I hate that I won't be able to access some of my antique stuff until I add one. Oh, well. And that's it for the cons. I find this to be an outstanding computer for the price and would highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't need eyeball-searing speed and massive memory capacities necessary for some genres. For me, I'm certain it's going to be my workhorse for some time to come. ... show more

  • Fast snappy machine for cheap.
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
Fast and simple setup, wifi connection strong and fast. Not overloading with shovelware, has a decent variety of utilities and software, most of which looks reasonable for the typical pc user. Havent tested for gaming, and don't plan to on anything modern/4k, mostly emulation which shouldn't burden it too much. Intergrated graphics has enough power to run background apps for any upscaled emulation to 1080p, but I wouldnt try and run anything like twitch simultaneously. I plan on using it lightly, some work, some low key gaming, and for the price it makes sense. A great laptop for students, its a good size with enough umph for your educational needs, or if you're bored. Design is great, feels very solid, keyboard is great, fingerprint sensor actually works (i do construction and my hands get wrecked all the time, this a big deal for me). Sync'd with my phone super easy in under 5 minutes, porting my google account and contacts no problem! I'd highly recommend for someone that wants a great machine for an awesome price. I'm not saying it has all the power in the world, or storage, or biggest battery, but for the price you'll be greatly impressed with how the specs shine on this laptop. Also impressively thin, and hasn't really gotten above a warm temp. Solid state usually helps greatly with this, as all laptops use these now. Overall I highly recommend, and this would also be the perfect backup laptop for travel or to carry daily and not worry about something happening to it and cost you a grand. Mac users could find this as a viable pc option to meet their non-Mac needs. ... show more

  • Nice, Light Weight Ryzen 3 Notebook with a decent 1080p Screen
Capacity: 4GB RAM | 128GB SSD
First this seems to be a very good value for the money but you should know before buying, a few things. I personally prefer AMD Ryzen based computing mainly because the computers based on AMD tend to be the best value for your money. Usually these are equal to or slightly lower performing than their Intel counterparts, save for the integrated AMD Vega video controller which is superior to Intel's in a number of important ways. My biggest issue with this Notebook (distinction is such portable devices that breathe from the underside are NoteBooks whereas MacBooks, as example, are true laptops because of the solid underside which can be set on the lap, carpet, bedding etc) is that this model has, integrated into the motherboard 4GB of DDR4. To have more memory (wise) you will need to purchase a single DDR4 SODIMM of 4, 8 or 16GB thus making the memory bus un-matched which always results in a slight loss in overall performance since the system has to compromise a little to make the miss-matched memory work OR worse has to hobble the system to be on a Single Channel memory bus, resulting often in a 25% loss in total system wide performance. Secondly, while it VERY positive to have a NVMe M.2 SSD in ANY computer system, these come in many flavors. The SK Hynix M.2 SSD this system comes with is considered to be reliable but is also a bit slow at around 500MBps max transfer rate whereas a nice, not very expensive AData XPG NVMe M.2 SSD can peak in a model like this around 2600MBps! Keep in mind, at this price and for basic use this still seems perfectly OK and still a decent value at around $350 - beyond that price it starts becoming a Not so great value however. The 1080p IPS screen is not too bad either, considering the price. Finally, this is the first system I've seen that is entirely, irretrievably UEFI which means you will be VERY limited to ONLY those OS' that fully support this. Outside of the fact that Windows 10 "S" is barely usable, a late version of Windows 10 (there've been what, about 12 versions of Win10 up till this point?) or now Windows 11, also the late model Ubuntu family 20.04 LTS and newer as just one example. I tested Win10 Pro and Kubuntu 20.04 LTS on this model and both functioned well though Win10 really Needs a minimum of 16GB to really work well, Kubuntu, on the other hand seemed happy as could be with only 4GB! Nevermind that you can NOT run any Windows programs nearly at all though Linux versions of Firefox, Chrome & Brave all work quite well as does LibreOffice and ONLYOffice... Bottomline here is that there is Nothing wrong with this Notebook, not really - sort of depends on your purpose, values and usage patterns as to whether it will work well for you or not, this is just my rating of this unit...
