Some upgrades to a classic. Have some Ambassadeurs older than me still going strong. This reel is just the newest example of the 6500C3. Fine reel. Pure Fishing has bought up most of the iconic brands in fishing and moved a lot of production to China. I've used Abu Garcia reels for many years. This one is a little smaller than the 6501 C 3 I normally use but supply chains are slow and I needed a reel so I got what I expected. This reel is better for Steelhead than Chinook but it will do that job also. The reel is rated for 12 lb mono or 30 lb braided. Naturally ,the local sporting goods store had either 20 lb or 50 lb ( limited choices is the apparent future ) so I put 125 yards of 50 lb test braided and it's working pretty well. Circumstances are conditioning us to take what we can get now. But Abu Garcia is a very good, Swedish made product. ... show more

I grew up with the old red 5000's. I bought this version instead of the c4 for the nostalgia of that annoying spool release placement. I have caught a few small fish with it in my last few trips. As it gets broken in, it steadily casts better. I recommend this reel for saltwater rigs and heavier baits. The weight of the high capacity spool makes it harder to cast light lures (under 1/4 oz) like most beetle spins. I think the nonadjustable centrifugal brake makes it harder to cast than the older, simpler models. Kinda like owning a superbike with training wheels permanently attached. It still casts pretty well, but not as freely as I remember the old ones. Maybe it just needs a few more years of use to really loosen up, but idk. These reels are rock solid against huge fish, good for saltwater, and easy to work on when they need maintenance. I recommend them for people who want reels that last through a generation when cared for. ... show more

The newer model seems to have more plastic which is less appealing to the eye admittedly, but does not seem to impair reel function. I've been using the C3 and C4 models for decades now and I am now a loyalist to the brand even with Abu being bought out by Pure Fishing now. Use them enough and you will have to replace parts, but that is to be expected and thankfully the parts remain available to this brand. I have tried imitators hoping to save some money, but unlike many clones made of guns the competition can not seem to make a comparable working reel to the C3 or C4. These reels work great for long line trolling as well as casting artificial baits you are not trying to speed fish with. I'd not consider this a great choice for a buzz bait, doing search with a fast moving spinner, or crank bait due to the speed of the gear ratio. I've wasted lots of money on many bait casters and thrown them in trash as I continue to use and I have now purchased another of the C3 and C4 series. ... show more
