These are a great deal for 40 bucks, they are heavy duty, have plenty of foam, thumb screws to tighten them down, the straps do work if you thread them correctly (they have go in from the back side) however I'm not sure I will use them they will hold. There is a little bit of assembly involved but it's mostly just threading nuts onto the bolts that takes the time. I'm happy with the purchase! ... show more

While the assembly instructions leave a lot to be desired, this is a pretty solid fixed kayak rack -IF- you have adequate rail clearance to install it. My mistake was not recognizing that you need about 3-inches of clearance under your rails in order to attach these, which unfortunately for me is not the case on my Toyota Venza. Not only are the bolts very long, which theoretically you could cut with a hack saw, the overall assembly, inclusive of the twist-on lock nuts, requires 3+ inches of clearance beneath your rails in order to attach the rack to your rails. ... show more

What can I say, you get what you pay for. The kayak j-hook mounts themselves are ok. They were a pain in the you know what to put together. After using them once to transport my kayak I checked them and they had came fairly loose. I tightened them really well but they still came loose. Now, onto the straps and line tie-downs for the bow and stern; DO NOT USE THESE!!! I highly recommend not using any of the tie downs that come with this mount. Every stop I made I checked them and they were always loose. Then, on my way home the bow line came off and my kayak slammed down to the side of my car. The side view mirror housing in my car was knocked off into the road. I was able to recover it and put it back on but now it’s all scratched up. This could have been way worse had it happened in an interstate. Pleas be careful and use quality straps, not the ones that come with this product because it’s too dangerous. ... show more

We bought these for our 12 ft kayak. If you have a smaller kayak or multiple kayaks that you need to transport, they will work. I like that they came with the straps. It didn’t work for our situation but I’ve seen them work before. They were not sturdy enough for our 12ft kayak. If you have something light weight, these would be perfect. I have a 13 foot, three person C kayak. I just completed a 500 mile round-trip and part of the trip was through very Highwinds. The rack worked wonderfully on top of my van and the stock roof rails. The ratcheting straps are a key piece to the success and easy on off of the kayak.

I received the rack this afternoon. I had no trouble assembling it. I used a 13mm extended socket instead of the wrench provided with the rack. This made it much easier to assemble. It took about 30-40 minutes to assemble, but I was not in a hurry. Instructions were easy to follow. I was somewhat concerned about the rack fitting on my Thule aero bars, but it fit just fine. After installing the rack and mounting my kayak on the rack, I drove about 30 miles to get some groceries for a kayak camping trip I'm going on in a few days. Boat was rock-solid in the rack and the rack didn't shift at all. The straps that were included with the rack were exactly the right length to hold the boat in place. There were extra washers and locknuts included in the hardware which was nice. All in all, I'm a very happy customer. Update... Returned from a kayak camping trip to the Sierras (about 200 miles each way.) Rack was rock solid all the way. Drove at the speed limit (might have exceeded the limit a few times, possibly). No problems with boat or rack. Had some nasty cross winds across the Central Valley and one of the passes through the Coast Range but the rack and boat stayed firmly in place.     • Sturdy but difficult to assemble
As some other reviewers have remarked, the assembly of these kayak racks was a bear! The drilled holes in the tubes don't line up well which required knocking the bolts through with a hammer. These are carriage bolts with a square end designed to fit into a square hole. It was very difficult to to get them to seat properly. Again, as others have said, the supplied "wrench" is useless. Also, the unit comes with hand tightening nuts to attach to the car crossbars. There is no mention of these nuts in the "instructions". I basically had to figure out everything for myself. Now the good part. Once installed, these racks are very solid and secure and the straps are great. 45 minutes to install. With a better instruction sheet and better quality control on the drilling machine, I would give it five stars. Recommended for reasonably handy folks. ... show more
