  • Terrific value - and the seller Wagner Chainsaws has really great customer service.
I got this for a chainsaw mill and also to take down some really large oaks on the property. My initial reaction when unboxing was disappointment as the chain brake handle was broken even though there was no visible damage to the box in which it was shipped. I sent a note via Amazon to the seller and they responded quickly and professionally to resolve all issues. After doing some minor assembly, the first start was very surprising - it started on the 4th pull of the rope and ran well. I made some very minor adjustments to the idle speed and started cutting some oak for firewood. It has great power and blasted through the red oak at least 50% faster than my Stihl MS271. As mentioned in the manual (which appears to be a edited reprint of the Stihl manual), I took it easy during break in and the saw seems to perform better after a dozen tanks of fuel. Interestingly, the manual has two different fuel/oil mix ratios listed in it. I'm using the higher oil ratio mix so I'm certain there will be plenty of lubrication. I'll just clean the spark arrester and change plugs more often. I have mounted it in a chainsaw mill with a 36" bar. I think the long bar is probably too much for this saw, but it works fine as long as I don't push too hard. I have milled a few white oak logs now and think the saw will hold up well as long as I maintain it properly. This saw should cut anything that I'm capable of handling and more. I'll probably use a 20" bar for most tree work as that will handle the vast majority of the trees on my land. I highly recommend purchasing from the seller Wagner Chainsaws as they stock these, ship fast, and provide truly excellent customer service. They provided replacement parts for parts damaged in shipment and followed up to make sure the issues were resolved. The folks I dealt with were knowledgeable, professional, and very helpful. I will certainly be purchasing bars, chains, and other consumables from them in the future. I'm glad I paid a few dollars more to avoid dealing with a seller from a different continent. Well worth it. ... show more

  • Great saw for 12 months and then....
I am just over the one year mark using this saw for cutting firewood. The chain tensioner failed and so have the 2 more stihl brand tensioners. I can only get around two tanks of fuel and the gear straps again. This saw has great power and up until about 12 months of owning it was very reliable. Its a shame I cant seem to get any options from seller on fixing the problem. I feel I am close to having broke even on the cost of saw to the wood it has cut. Anyone know of a better saw for comparable price? Update, i will try the bushings, thank you ... show more

  • Give it a chance
I bought this saw for a Alaskan saw mill. Got it out of the box put it together started it up like I would with all my other Stihl saws. Ran great. Put a bar and chain on it and 30 pulls later didn't run. Contacted seller and he helped me adjust the carb to get it going again and I was able to fine tune it after that. Already have put 2 gallons of fule threw it, and it has preformed awesome. The BAD, I have lost at least 4 nuts off of the front post. The chain tensioner is weak. Overall for the price it's hard to beat. I like the skid plate on the bottom and the fact that it's close to sthills colors. One more thing if getting a 36 in Alaskan mill get a 42in bar. You lose a lot having to move it back for the sprocket. ... show more

  • Great value for your money. I put tons of hours on this thing, and it's still runs great
I have been using this powerhead to slab giant white oak logs and it has performed admirably. I think it's a little greedy with a gas and oil, but so what at the price compared to an MS 880. Quick note: DO NOT buy a 42-in bar from these guys. You will never find another chain to fit it because it is 5/8 of an inch longer than any other standard MS bar. ... show more

  • Working great after 1yr
I have owned this for a year and it has been pretty awesome. It does everything you ask. The only issues I have had are a bar nut fell off early on (I replaced with OEM for 3 dollars) and I had to tune it because it was running a bit rich out of the box. I use it mostly with 24” bar which is a nice setup imo. With a 36” bar it gets pretty heavy. ... show more

  • It's not a Stihl but outperforms my MS461
Assembly was fairly simple. I started with a 32-1 mixture and the saw started after the sixth pull with the brake on, running a 28" bar. I started cutting some small alder and didn't want to run too long on it's first mission. After about five minutes cutting 6-12" logs, it seemed to be struggling a bit so I shut it down. I pulled the bar, cleaned the oil passages, maxed out the bar oil output and also added the remaining ounce of Stihl synthetic to the gallon container of pre-mix I was using. The saw came alive and ran WAY better and didn't seem to struggle, even cutting 18" logs. I can't say as though my Stihl 461 could keep up with the torque of this saw, it never bogged down and went through the alder like butter. Time will tell as to the reliability but after two tankful's of fuel, it keeps running better. So far, I'm VERY satisfied. ... show more

  • Update to original review
I purchased two of these power heads. One to run an Alaskan saw mill to cut boards and the other to run as a post cutter. The first saw worked great the first day I used it as a basic chain saw. Now both power heada sat until I had better weather. Saw #1 that was going to be used as a post cutter now leaks blade oil everywhere. It's going to have to go to the repair shop and hopefully it can be repaired. Saw #2 that was going to be used on the Alaskan saw mill started up and ran for maybe 5 minutes. Never ran again. It's currently at the repair shop and hopefully it can be fixed. ... show more
