  • Keep your expectations low
I’ve recently found myself increasingly interested in stargazing. Not looking at planets close up or seeing distant nebulae, but just taking in the grandeur of the night sky. Conventional wisdom says the best way to do this is by using binoculars. The problem I have is that I’m mostly blind in one eye, which makes using binoculars difficult and unpleasant. So I decided to try a monocular to solve this problem. Before I go any further, I should say that I do understand that high-quality optics don’t come cheap. So my expectations were low for this value-priced monocular. I mainly ordered it to see if a monocular was a viable solution for me. If I liked it, I might invest in more expensive optics. Unfortunately, even with those low expectations, this monocular leaves much to be desired. It just feels cheap (which, of course, it is, but still…). It comes with a very flimsy tripod and a rudimentary smartphone mount that’s difficult to align properly. Does it magnify distant objects? Yes. And as a toy for a child it might be perfectly acceptable. Likewise, if you don’t mind a lot of distortion in your view, then this might work for you. But I did not find this an enjoyable instrument to use. The lens is so far from precision ground that objects are quite distorted, and the focus point is limited to the very center of the view. There’s plenty of barrel distortion around the periphery. I’ve attached a couple of photographs of terrestrial objects that I hope will show this distortion. The problem with using it for stargazing is that, while it amplifies light and makes more stars visible, most of them in your field of view won’t appear to be in focus because of the lens’s distortion. This makes the stargazing experience less than ideal, to say the least. Again, I understand you get what you pay for, so as long as you use this monocular with low expectations, you won’t be disappointed. Consider it a toy and give it to an inquisitive young person, and I’m sure they’ll get some enjoyment out of it. In the end, I’ll give this monocular three stars, because it does magnify distant objects. But there are far too many flaws in the view it provides to be anything close to five stars. ... show more
