  • Neat Portable Digital Microscope With Surprisingly Clear Image
NOTE: The listing for this item appears to have changed. The original item reviewed here is: LCD Digital Microscope, (1000X-1080P) Coin Microscope Equipped Alloy Stand, Comes with 2 Instructions This is a nice little digital microscope with surprisingly good clarity. Considering that you’re getting pretty crisp microscope optics, a CCD to display and capture images, and a 4.3” LCD display, this package is not overpriced at all. And while it might feel “toy-like,” an advantage of this small unit over bigger and more professional products is that it is battery powered, allowing you to take this to forest or lake for viewing pollen or Paramecium. Having tested several small digital microscopes that hook up to your smartphone or computer, I was surprised and pleased at the clarity of the display image and photos I got. As a science instructor, I will be using this indoors for my college level Anatomy class, as well as outdoors for Aquatic Ecology. TIP: Remove the clear plastic dust cap at the bottom of the microscope before use! Assembly was pretty easy. If you plan to pack this back up when not in use, pay attention to how things are stored in the box, especially the silver vertical stand (see photo). For the lower power magnification (50X according to the manual), position the bottom of the microscope about 1 ½” above the base. (See photo labeled “50X”). You can focus on an object both by rotating the focus wheel on the shaft of the microscope tube itself, or by turning the rack-and-pinion focus knob on the bracket that attaches the microscope to the stand. You may have to adjust the bracket height to find the “sweet spot” for focusing. Note that the focus range is very narrow, and this microscope will work best with flatter objects like coins. TIP: The light wheel on the side of the LCD screen controls the microscope illumination. I had it turned up all the way most of the time, but if your image appears washed out try turning it down a little. If your image appears too dark, check that the wheel is turned all the way up. Once you’ve focused on an object at lower magnification, if you continue rotating the focus wheel COUNTERCLOCKWISE the microscope will zoom to 250X. You will need to lower the bracket until the bottom of the microscope is about 1/8” above the base in order to focus — yes, that’s pretty close! (See photo labeled “250X”) At this higher magnification, the focus range is very narrow and only very flat objects will be entirely clear in the display. Note that this listing describes the microscope as “1000X,” and I think that is only true if you hook the microscope up to a computer with a larger display which greatly increases the image size compared to the 4.3” LCD screen. Menus are cumbersome to navigate, and you’ll need to keep your manual handy at first. The main button to know is the “Menu” button: Press and hold for 2-3 seconds to cycle through Video mode (the default, for capturing video), Photo mode (for taking photos), and File mode (for viewing your photos or videos). In the Video or Photo modes press the “OK” button to capture. Note that no MicroSD card was included with this microscope; you will need to supply your own (up to 32GB). One thing that I found annoying was that when you press the “OK” button to take a photo, the entire microscope unavoidably shakes a little. I was worried that this would result in blurred photos, but apparently the digital capture speed is fast enough that this is not an actual issue. Not a single photo I took this way was blurry. Of course this is not an issue when running the microscope from your computer and controlling it with your mouse (see below). Just pop the MicroSD card out and use a reader to transfer the photos to your PC. Hooking the microscope up to my Windows 10 PC ended up being much simpler than I expected (Mac is not supported). I actually spent quite a bit more time researching this than actually doing it. You do not need to used the enclosed software CD — in fact, I recommend against it because it does not support the Camera function. 1. First, make sure you have the Windows 10 “Camera” app installed on your computer (see photo; if you have a laptop with built in webcam it is likely already there). 2. Next, turn on the microscope. I recommend that you pre-focus it on low magnification on a clearly visible object like a coin. Then, set the microscope to “PC Cam” mode (Menu button > Menu button (System/wrench icon) > Navigate down to USB > OK > PC Cam > OK). The menu will back up to the previous System screen, and is now in PC Cam mode. 3. Next, just plug in the microscope to a USB port on your computer. Windows 10 will automatically install the drivers. The microscope will then display a blue screen that says “PC Cam.” 4. Last, launch the Camera app on your PC. If you do not see your microscope image, then you’re probably staring at yourself in your webcam. Just click the small camera-switch icon near the upper right corner of the Camera app window, and select the other camera that should be listed there (GENERAL - UVC). You should now be seeing the microscope image on your screen. You can use the Camera app to switch between camera and video modes, and capture photos or videos (the default file location is Pictures\Camera Roll). All other microscope functions including focusing will be done on the microscope itself the same as without using the PC. TIP: At one point, my microscope locked up when I tried to take a photo and I could not get it working on the PC again. I went to the Device Manager, right-clicked on GENERAL - UVC listed under Cameras, and uninstalled it. I rebooted my PC, plugged the camera back in as before, and all returned to normal. Note that you may also need to do this to avoid device conflicts if you have had more than one microscope or similar camera device installed on your computer. One additional note, which is obvious once you hook this up to a computer, is that the microscope supports ONLY 1280x720 photo and 720p video. While there are menu options on the microscope to change the image size (1.3Megapixel, 2M, 3M), these don’t really save a higher resolution image. That’s quite a bit of information for this little unit! However, once you’ve got the feel for this little microscope, I think you’ll really like it. I’m pleased with the results I got, and I recommend it. ... show more

  • Works well with one caveat.
Overall I like this microscope. I got it to inspect solder joints and it has worked great in that regard. The picture is clear and bright and it works great when paired with a usb battery pack. The only thing I don’t like is that the zoom knob that adjusts it up and down on gears has too little friction so it just slides to the bottom all the time. Fortunately you can still do larger adjustments by adjusting the position on the vertical support. Anyway, good item. ... show more

  • Handy little guy to have around
This isn’t something I will use everyday as I don’t collect coins or have any hobbies that would need it, but it sure has come in handy when I do need it. I was trying to read the model number for registration warranty on a product and I couldn’t entirely make it out even with my glasses. So I thought I would try this and it made it so easy to read. Very easy to use and while it might not be conducive to read a large amount of writing where you have to move the item around a lot to read left to right. If you are looking at product numbers, serial numbers it made a dramatic difference and gave me the ability to use my warranty that had not expire. Very easy to use, the item just has to be able to fit under the scope and you have your readable answer. ... show more

  • Great for numismatics
I was super excited to get this in the mail. I grew up collecting stamps but started my daughter into collecting coins (and I started liking it too). The product arrived in a box with the pieces needing to be assembled. There is a small instruction booklet that is helpful but even with the booklet I made a few mistakes. My smart little whippersnapper teenager figured it out and helped me. We found a 2019 penny to view. The digital screen is nice. It allows you to change the date, and size of picture quality. The device came precharged but it can also be charged by the USB cable provided. The image can also be displayed on a larger screen like a PC by using the USB cable. It's cool that it has a slot for an SD card to store images. The mistake I made was forgetting to remove the clear plastic cap under the camera area. I also didn't read where the directions said to twist the middle for a sharper image (to focus). I'm not sure what the CD is for, I need to read the instructions again. LOL Overall, this is a great product for the price. ... show more

  • Good for viewing coins/stamps and similar objects
Light weight easy to carry and internal rechargable battery makes this microscope ready for any adventure. It lifts out of the viewing stand to image objects otherwise impossible to put on slide stand. Highest resolution is 720P but gets the job done.
