Ok, so this is a Japanese knife that is now produced in China by a contractor under HOSHANHO specifications. This allows for a lowered price. It is still the finest knife in my kitchen. I find it is well balanced, has a very comfortable handle and a sharp and durable blade of impressive quality. That's all anyone could expect at this price point.

Sleek, stunning grip and ultra-sharp durable blade. Those are the first things that pop into mind when reviewing this knife. It looks and feels professional, at a fraction of the cost. While there are far nicer brands out there, this one is perfect for the chef-on-a-budget. The walnut grain handle is comfortable and ergonomic, and fits right in your hand. The blade feels fairly thick and not at all flimsy. And the sharpness right out of the box? Laser sharp is how I'd describe it.

I bought this same knife about a year or more ago. On that knife is printed the name "Hoshanho, Loong series" only, just as advertised. That knife was perfect in finish and quality control, 5/5 stars. A few days ago, I saw the same knife advertised on amazon for $30.00, and said, this is a steal, I have to get another one, because I was very pleased with my first buy. I bought the same exact knife on sale for $30.00. On its arrival, I noticed that the new knife finish wasn't as polished as the one I bought a year ago. the indentation or etched out markings on the sides, weren't as deeply pronounced. It was more faintly stamped on in processed, especially on the right side. The knife looked like the quality control had gone down a bit on the manufacturing side of things. The writings remain the same, except that under the "Hoshanho, Loong series" name, was a number "027". I further cross reference the previous knife I bought a year ago, with the current one, and found out that they might have switch manufacturers in China (designed in Japan but made in China). The knives advertised on amazon shows just the plain "Hoshanho, Loong series" writing without the number "027" under it. Moreover, my old knife looks exactly like the advertised and polished on amazon. The new knives look a little less polished, and more semi-flat polished in appearance, especially on the right side. I returned it for another one but found out that it was about the same. That's probably why they were selling off this batch so cheap, because there were some flaws which occurred during manufacturing. Pros: the knife is sharp, feel about the same. I'll be doing cutting and dicing with it during cooking, so I guess the appearance in not the greatest, if it can still do the job. I'll give it 4/5, because I think the new manufacturer, could have done a better job making the product and checking the quality of the outcome at the end, Afterall, "Hoshanho, Loong series" is a great Japanese product line, but when you assigned it out to other companies in China to make it for you, they might not take the care to produce a top quality product to perfection as you would when doing it yourself. I have other Hoshanho, Loong series products, and I am very pleased with them. They are very sharp and elegant to look at and use. I ordered a cleaver; I'll update on that. I tried calling the manufacturer, but I got a voiced mail of a woman speaking in Chinese. I had no idea of what was said, however, I left my name and phone number for a call back to update them on my opinion and concerns of my current "Hoshanho, Loong series" knife purchase.

I ordered this knife for myself to have as a chopping knife in my kitchen. It came packaged well and shipped securely. This thing feels really good in my hand and I’m a medium sized guy. The blade comes very sharp. I like how it’s slightly curved on the blade to allow for a small rocking motion while cutting. I’ve had it for a few months now and it still is just as sharp as it was on the day I got it. Overall, very happy!

This has quickly replaced my Henckels made Nakiri knife as my favorite, most used knife. What elevates this knife to it's top spot is the handle and balance - both are perfect in my hand. And that extended tip (which the Nakiri lacks) comes in handy for getting into tight places. For the record, the blade is excellent too. I really don't think I could create a better knife for general use. IMO it's a bargin at the normal $50 price, but for under $25 with free shipping it's a no-brainer. Do yourself a favor and buy this knife.
