Tool worked great on my 04 Corvette W/ the LS1. I had issues in the beginning and was unable to compress the springs properly, but flipping the compressor plate so the grooves faced up allowed my dual valvesprings to compress and move easier for the keeper install. Would 100% use again.

Out of all the different cheap tools for valve springs, this is the only one that worked for me. I'm really glad I didn't shell out the money for the name brand version. Was able to get all 8 pairs of valve springs set back into place on my 2013 GMC Yukon (6.2L Vortec). Like other reviews say, it does in fact take a bit of practice (and some cursing). Didn't have to do any re-threading or modifications, just had to mess around with it. Once I got the hang of it the rest was a breeze. A few things that helped me: 1) The instructions show that you can install the aluminum spacer two ways, top or bottom. In my particular case, I had to have the spacer installed on the bottom as shown in the 2nd picture. 2) When putting everything together, I used a small bit of engine assembly lube on the center screw that is used for clamping down the springs. After doing all 16, there's no noticable wear on the threads other than the paint now being gone. Only other bit of wear I noticed were shavings around the center nut & washer after doing a couple springs. Looks like it was just paint coming off, both from the screw and the washer spinning against the clamp as I was tightening things down. Just be sure to wipe it off and be careful not to lose any debris inside the cylinder head. 3) Holding the tool in place when bolting it down to the cylinder head helped make sure both springs were covered correctly. 4) Lastly, I tightened down the center nut just until it was snug against the springs. Then, while holding the "clamp" part of the tool against the springs (as shown in pic #3), I was able to nudge the springs as needed with my other hand or adjust the positioning of the clamp as needed. Doing it this way helped make sure the springs were centered around the valve stem as I tightened it down and allowed me to set the keepers properly. The cost of this tool is much less than the name brand tools, but you also get what you pay for, if for daily use buy the good ones, for the weekend warrior this is your tool. This particular tool with the provided spacer does not align properly on a 5.3l vortec truck engine, I found that by eliminating the spacer and letting the base plate rest on valve cover boss (stud) it allowed for proper alignment, but be careful not to torque down the bolts in the rocker arm threads, just hand tightening with maybe a little adjustment after compression was all that was necessary. The install process requires a little bit of prying to keep springs centered on valve stems, use a long thin screwdriver between the spring and the compression plate for this, do not pry between the compression plate and base plate of the tool or you will bend the compression plate, at times I had to use a small pry bar to get the leverage needed. I also found that aligning and adjusting the springs at the begging of the compression process as many times as needed to keep them centered on the valve stem helped greatly, don't just throw the tool on and fully compress the spring, pay great attention to centering on the valve stem. Most likely you will still have a larger gap near top top of the spring once fully compressed, this will let you drop in 1/2 of the keeper, this is where you will need to gently pry between the spring and the compression plate to center the spring on the valve, you should be able to use your fingernail to rotate the 1/2 keeper to bottom while gently prying allowing room to install the other half of keeper at least most of the way to the lock groove if not all of the way, if it does not quite set into the groove a long punch and light to medium tap with a hammer will seat the keeper, you can also make small adjustments to the base plate bolts just don't go crazy torquing on them. After figuring these tricks out installation went easily, just requires patience. Two last things...1) Use the compressed air method, I tried TDC method and it can be done but shoving rope in the spark plug hole is not as easy some make it sound, especially on #8 cylinder 2) Apply grease to the keepers, it not only helps them stick, but helps them rotate easier when you are trying to get the 2nd half in place. ... show more

    • Junk! Spend the money for a good one
Don’t waste your money. I got half way through changing springs on one head and had to switch to the second bolt the kit supplied ( that should tell you something) and then couldn’t finish the job before the second bolt and but are stripped. I did everything by hand but just simply compressing the springs the bolt and nut are junk. Now I’m mid project and have to order another one but it definitely won’t be this one! ... show more
