  • Does not Come with the White Pots, Otherwise Nice Set
5X Bonsai Starter Kit, Bonzai Seed Kits, Durable Planting Bags, Complete Indoor Starter Kit for Growing Bonsai Plants, Gardening Gifts for Women & Men 5 different kinds of bonsai seeds(Blue Jacaranda, Japenese Black Pine, Locust, Flame Tree, Norway Spruce.), 5 bonsai burlap bags, 5 peat pellets, 1 pruning scissors and growing kit manual So excited to start these bonzais. The set is nice and has all you need to get started. The box is about 11" x 4" x 4" inches. Everything in the kit looks and works fine. A nice set for the price. Growing a bonsai from seed involves patiently preparing seeds (often with stratification), sowing them in well-draining soil, providing consistent moisture and light, and then beginning shaping techniques like wiring and pruning after a year or two of seedling growth, understanding that it's a long journey to a mature bonsai. You'll need to research your chosen species for specific needs like cold stratification (chilling) and ensure proper watering and light, but generally, you'll plant seeds shallowly in bonsai soil, keep them moist in a cool spot, and start training once they have true leaves and some strength. 1. Seed Preparation & Collection Stratification (Cold Treatment): Many seeds need a period of cold, moist conditions (like winter) to break dormancy, often done by storing them in a fridge for weeks or months. Scarification (Optional): Some hard-coated seeds need their outer shell nicked or soaked in water (8-12 hours) to help germination. 2. Sowing the Seeds Potting Mix: Use a coarse, well-draining mix (bonsai soil, compost, sand, perlite) in pots with drainage holes. Planting: Sow seeds shallowly (about 1/8 inch deep or the seed's own depth), spaced apart, and gently firm the soil. Water: Water lightly and keep consistently damp, not soggy. 3. Seedling Care (First Year) Location: Place in a cool, bright spot, out of direct, harsh sun. Patience: Germination can take weeks or months; keep the soil moist. First True Leaves: Once seedlings have two sets of "true" leaves (not the initial seed leaves), they are ready for the next step. 4. Early Training (Years 1-2+) Repotting: Move to a slightly larger pot with bonsai soil. Wiring: Gently wire the seedling at an angle to create movement and bend it into desired shapes, as it's flexible now. Pruning: Start light pruning to encourage branch development and maintain size, focusing on trunk thickening first. Key Considerations Time: Growing from seed takes many years (5-10+) to reach bonsai styling stage, so be patient. Species: Choose species that suit your climate (tropical vs. outdoor). Start More Seeds: Plant extra seeds to select the best-looking seedlings with smaller leaves for bonsai ... show more

  • Great starter gift for beginners
I'm far from someone with a green thumb. I don't know the first thing about growing bonsai trees, but this kit made it really easy to get started and learn from. I can't think of anything it doesn't provide. Everything is included with clear instructions and labels, and the instructions were straightforward enough that even I didn't feel lost. I really liked the variety of seeds it came with. They look like they'd grow into beautiful trees based on the slips showing each variety's picture and details. The pucks of soil were easy to work with. I soaked them overnight in containers while I soaked the seeds, squeezed out the water the best that I could, shoveled a good amount in each bag, and sprinkled a few seeds of each variety in them, then covered them with a little more soil. There were plenty of seeds for each type, and none of them looked dried out or questionable, from what I could tell. That's all there really was to it. It's supposed to take quite a few weeks to months for bonsai seeds to begin showing signs of life, so they haven't yet germinated after about a week, but time will tell. The process was fun, and easy enough though, and I'm learning a lot from it as I go. The whole kit is very well put together. The little tools are cute. They're not the best quality, and tend to come off the handles, but for something like this it's fine, and I wasn't expected much more. The wooden planter is basic, but looks nice, and serves its purpose, and it's a nice size for a window sill. I think it would make a perfect gift for anyone into gardening or botany, or even someone you don't quite know what to get, because it's such a neutral gift. I feel like most people from any age group would enjoy it, since it's so easy to get into and there aren't any prerequisites. A decent value for all that's included. ... show more

  • This kit was a bit of a letdown.
Not sure what I expected when I bought this kit. I certainly wasn't entertaining becoming like Mr. Miyagi trimming bonsai in my elder years.. no not at all *ahem*. Really though, I was just hoping to start a new hobby. And so far, not so good. For starters, what are touted as "bonsai seeds" is a bit of a misnomer. They're just regular tree seeds, which is the important thing to remember about bonsai. They're not a different, unique species. They're more like... a chihuahua compared to a great dane. Same species, vastly different rearing. And they take a very long time and tons of care yo shape them into bonsai. So keep that in mind. First, the packaging. The box was a super nice touch, and very convenient. The seeds come sealed in individual envelopes, and included is ostensibly everything you need to get started. As for the seeds themselves.. well, that's where my first problems arose. Despite following the directions to the letter, and using filtered water, I had zero sprouts over the course of three months. While I won't rule out user error entirely, I'm confident I did everything right, including the pre-plant 72 hour seed soak. Temperature was fine, lighting was good... but still, no seedlings. Apart from that, everything else about the kit was superb. The coconut fiber pucks were well sealed, the burlap bags and included signs were of good quality. Everything about the kit is great... except for those darn normal tree seeds. I have a few left, so maybe I'll try again as spring gets closer. ... show more
