This thing is excellent, if you have a collection of ebook files. For me it's perfect. Super compact, easy to carry along with my big phone. It has a back light and a touch screen, as well as intuitive buttons for page turning. Screen refresh is pretty snappy. I thought the lower ppi of 219 would be more annoying but I barely notice it with text, although with images it's very noticeable. I was able to easily install the bookerly font, and it works really well here. It has a good back light for night reading, and obviously that fantastic e-ink display that's great in good lighting. I like that it has a touchscreen too. Navigating and swiping are intuitive, not requiring remembering button pressing patterns. My only gripe is the battery only lasts about a week of reading daily, which is ok but not great. I love the size, it's been going everywhere with me. If you're looking for something to be Internet connected with sync and all that, this will be a big disappointment. But if you already have a collection of ebook files, and are looking for something compact for your pocket, this little device ticks almost all the boxes.

This thing is terrible. It's a paperweight. There's no removable SD card or slot for one and the app won't sync to my Mac after hours of trying. I wanted to love it so bad. 10/10 would not recommend. Run away. Junk alert. Worst e reader I've ever had. I get they wanted to build it cheap but throw at least an SD slot on it so you aren't wrecked if your glitch software won't work on a computer swing and a HUGE MISS. I have ordered thousands of things on Amazon and I don't leave bad reviews hardly ever. This one deserves a negative star.

Honestly I wish this screen was better. It’s a wonderfully compact device, and it actually has a frontlight. Incredible. I also like the physical page turn buttons. That makes it so much easier to use, and every reader should have these. The screen is ok, but the graphics rendering is pretty bad and the resolution is pretty bad too. Type looks jagged and rough. The software does not support advanced OpenType features - I tested out the Garamond Premier Pro font, which has a capital ‘Q’ whose tail should reach under the next couple letters. It just looks like a normal ‘Q’ on this device. Not a deal breaker, but it shows that this is limited by software. The screen on the Y-Ben 4.7” e-reader is much better than this one, but it doesn’t have a frontlight. I really wish I could find something that had a light, a good screen, and a compact pocket size without going for one of those $250+ e-ink android phone things. The file transfer using the OpenMTP program is a disaster. I can't understand why they wouldn't just enable mass storage transfer, but you're stuck with it. I had error messages and a non-responsive OpenMTP app when I transferred, but ultimately it did transfer things. I would probably use Wi-Fi to transfer most of the time if I kept this thing. For the money, it’s probably ok. But the bad screen quality makes it a disappointment. I pad $90 for it, but it’s worth $60.

First, the screen. Yes, the PPI is on the lower side, but the new Sharp Mode makes a huge difference and really helps with the text clarity. Of course, if you look closely, the text still looks a little blurry, it doesn't bother me much. It has that slightly old-school, almost vintage look you sometimes get with e-ink screens, and I found it very easy to get used to. Considering everything else this little reader does well, I really don't think this is a big issue. What impressed me most is actually the software and file transfer. The interface is really well organized and easy to use. TXT files can be opened directly, and it automatically creates a table of contents, which is super convenient. Transferring books is also really straightforward. You can adjust the font, spacing, refresh rate, page-turn settings, front light, and more. Overall, the software experience is honestly not far behind some of the bigger brands. Of course, this is coming from someone who doesn't need an open system or the ability to install apps. And then there's the magnetic cover wake-up feature... honestly, this is such a great little feature. You don't see it on many compact e-readers. It makes the device even more convenient to use, so I'm not constantly pressing the physical buttons, which should help them last longer. It's a small feature, but one I really appreciate. Last but not least, this little reader is seriously lightweight and comfortable to hold. My fingers don't get tired, and it's definitely less scary when you're reading in bed and accidentally drop it on your face. Other than the text being slightly less crisp, I honestly think this is a fantastic little e-reader.

I wanted to like this little device so bad. I bought it to replace being on my phone in bed at night-- I looked at the xteink but went with this one because it has a lit screen and can play audio. If it had worked as advertised it would have been perfect for curling up in bed with the lights off reading for a bit, and then turning on some audio and going to sleep. There's some technical flaws to the device, it formats epub kind of weird and the screen resolution is decidedly mid but for my use case this would have been fine. I liked the feel of it in my hand and it changes pages quickly enough that the small amount of text you get per page isn't a big deal. Unfortunately it won't cooperate with my computer. I have a Macbook Air that also runs windows parallels and I cannot get the recommended software to reliably find the OBOOk5 and allow me to put books on it. I saw another complaint that it wasn't compatible with their Mac but because the company gives directions and I have windows parallels as well I thought I would be fine. This was not the case. A few times their recommended software managed to find my device and ONCE it let me put a single file on but after that it wouldn't let me add anything else, then it lost the device and could never find it again. It's frustrating because I don't think there's another ereaader that has the same form factor, simplicity, and features. If they release another ereader in this line that has better software that was Mac compatible I'd probably try again, but $90 is too expensive for me to want to spend a lot of time trouble shooting, especially because of the screen resolution and formatting issues so I am returning it. On the other hand if you're a windows user who wants a little tiny ereader to replace bedtime phone scrolling you might want to check this out. I don't think I'd want to read for long long periods of time on it but as a nighttime phone replacement in theory it would be great. EDIT: Their customer service on this was very good, they were super responsive and offered a refund right away. I did end up buying an Xteink X4 as a replacement and I would say if you have a windows machine and aren't interested in learning how to do things like flashing software the OBOOK5 absolutely has the Xteink beat. The out of the box software is better, the UI is much easier because of the touch screen, it handles epub better, and the hardware feels nicer in the hand. The crosspoint software you can add to the Xteink X4 is better than what the OBOOK5 has but again that's 3rd party software you have to install yourself. For most people I don't think it's really necessary. Again ONLY FOR PC USERS, NOT MAC. Really I think if they made an OBOOK5 Pro or something they should just allow for expandable SD card storage like the Xteink and just avoid system conflict altogether, plus that would allow for a lot more room for audio content. E-book files are tiny but audio files are much larger. I'm baffled by how many ereaders EITHER have expandable storage OR are audio capable. Audio is what makes expandable storage matter?? Anyway I'd love if they fixed their Mac compatibility issues!! I would 100% trade the nicer crosspoint software for a front light and audio capability.

I am really enjoying this little tablet. My specifications were: must be able to be held in one hand like a phone, must have physical page turn buttons, must have frontlight, and must be able to load my own ePubs onto it. This meets all those specs perfectly. Getting files onto it is a little tricky - I've read it's simple with a Windows computer, but all I have is a Macbook and Chromebook. I couldn't get it to work with my Chromebook, but I downloaded a simple app called OpenMTP that allows me to get it to work with my Macbook. Unfortunately, it can only handle uploading one book at a time for some reason. So if you don't mind fussing a little bit to get your books onto the device, it's great.

I've been trying to reduce my phone screen time, and I decided to replace a lot of that usage with reading. BUT it's not always convenient to have my kindle quick and ready. After searching around for a few solution options, I ended up landing on this little device. The attractive looks, simple implementation, and nice price were just right to take a gamble. Overall, I'd say it's not perfect, but it's very good for what I wanted and I really like the palm-sized profile. The product has some great features for the price, such as a magnetic device cover that turns the obook5 on and off as you open and close. Power on time is quick, page turn is lightning fast, and this feels great in the hand, with the buttons right where either a thumb or finger can quickly tap through pages. There's plenty of room on the device, and everything so far has worked perfectly for me, with one exception: I can't for the life of me get the device to mount on OS X. I know the computer sees it, but it won't connect. I had to switch to a windows laptop to move things around, but that's not a deal-breaker for me. It might be for you if you don't have access to a windows device! But the wifi connectivity does allow you to search and download directly from Project Gutenburg to the device, which is a very cool additional feature. Based on my initial tests with some epub files I had, Mostly everything formatted fairly well and was easy to read. It's definitely not as feature rich or polished as larger size devices, so you are making a tradeoff with the small size, but that was worth it for me. I'm not crazy about the little stick-on cover, but I'm leaving it on for now to protect the device in my pocket.
