I was not really expecting much at this price, but was very impressed with this yarn winder. It has all the features you need and comes with simple but adequate instructions. I set it up right away and wound a cake of sock yarn. (See photo) It did a very good job of winding a well-balanced 100g cake with room to spare. . The clamping system works well and stays in place since there are built in stops on both the bottom clamp and the base of the winder (see photo)that hold it in place snuggley against the table edge. The clamp accomodates tabletops up to 1 1/2” thick. The wingnut is easy to tighten and there are non-slip features on the top and bottom clamping surfaces. It didn’t wiggle at all in use. The yarn guide locks in place under the base. This is a nice feature that my other winders lack. I like that the spindle is removable. That lets you weigh the yarn that you have wound to let you wind a specific amount of yarn off a cone or large skein The notches in the top of the spindle held fingering weight yarn in place , but I still always use a piece of painters tape as backup. Overall this is a very good buy. It is made from plastic with plastic gears so durability may be an issue. It was easy to crank and , while is was far from silent, operated very smoothly. I think that if it is carefully used, it should hold up pretty well and it certainly does a good job so far. ... show more

I got this yarn winder to replace an older one I've been using that has some design flaws that get on my nerves when I use it. This one has far exceeded my expectations in mitigating those flaws. -Size: This yarn winder has the capacity to handle larger skeins without losing control of the tension. In the photo attached to this review, I was able to easily wind a 279yd skein of size 4 yarn in one go. I've also used this for chunky yarn and it handles those well, too. -Mount: This yarn winder utilized a standard wing nut clamp style mount, however, there are a couple of super simple details to this that make it so much sturdier than my previous yarn winder. Both the underside of the clamp and the base of the yarn winder have anti-skid grips attached, preventing the side-to-side fishtail wobble that other yarn winders suffer from. There is a small lip on both the clamp and the base of the winder that just give the extra security of it staying in place. This winder also has a longer clamp length that allows me to use it on thicker surfaces. Altogether, still a compact yarn winder, but it has been sturdy, secure, and much more versatile and easier to use than others.
