The fit was tight, perfect for many of the joints but several of the lumber I purchased had to be trimmed a bit to fit comfortably. It might have been fine if I'd let the wood dry out more, but it didn't take much time with a hand plane to get everything to fit great. You definitely want at least 3 adults to stand the thing up once it's built, but you can make the top frame and put the feet on the legs alone and test fit everything easily. The fancy brackets from Home Depot would have been triple the cost. Those are 3mm steel plate, these are 3mm aluminum plate, which is about half the strength of steel. They felt plenty strong to me. I was particularly impressed with the quality of the hardware - the concrete anchors are beefy stainless steel and the screws are also nice stainless steel screws. I used a Robertson #3 driver which did great at driving the screws in. If you try to install these with a standard #2 Phillips head you're going to strip half of them - spend the time to get the right bit and you'll have a fine time. I'm stoked to have aluminum out there that won't rust and the pergola came out fantastic. Ours is 12x9 and 9' tall so it would clear the tops of the windows, so that took more work to cut the timbers to length and it was much harder to raise that way. Get a couple tall a frame ladders to set one side of the pergola on while you put the legs in and you'll be way less stressed getting it up than we were. I'd have no issues recommending this kit to a friend, and have done so already. ... show more

Very good material. Well made. BUT Too small had to sand down the 4x4s to fit. Created a lot more work. Will not buy again. Got another kit that no sanding was necessary.

Despite listing measurements to accommodate 4x4 nominal posts, these brackets do NOT work as planned. I managed to mallet things together but it took 10x's the time and energy for the project and still did not result in exacting measurements of finished pergola. Included hardware (screws) were cheap, and I ended up buying more durable ones. Disappointing for the price. ... show more

I shopped around for a while before purchasing and the price was very good. If you’re using pretty recently milled 4x4s and they’re still wet they might be tight fitting in so I tried each one of my 4x4s and found I had a couple I had to sand or plane to make them fit easier.
