The media could not be loaded. In light of anticipation of a possible future non-electric scenario, I wanted to get these hand-powered augers to add to my supply of tools that can be used regardless of local circumstances. Each of these augers comes in a plastic pouch that is almost adequate. The plastic is very thin and every pouch had an area that was torn or broken. Nevertheless, all of the augurs appear to be very well made, with strong welds between the shaft (the drill part) and what is called the 'Scotch eye'. There is a self-tapping pilot screw at the bottom of each shaft, which makes it possible to start the bore without wandering. The cutting edge at the bottom of each shaft is very sharp and set at the perfect angle to bite into any type of wood. I'm using it on pine in the video, but the ease in which it cuts, makes me think it would also be useful with oak or some other hardwood. The open spiral allows cut wood or chips to be evacuated from the hole as the auger is turned. In my experience, I can find no fault with these augurs. The video does not show it, but the tapered edge of the 'Scotch Eye' can be used to pound the augur over the end of a limb, giving a longer shaft for even greater leverage. I recommend using a damp cloth for clean-up after use, then applying a little light oil on every surface. Alternately, a piece of camphor can be kept in the toolbox or drawer where these augurs are stored. There is no documentation with this set - no care or usage suggestions, and no indication of what to do if there is any problem.

These bits are sturdy and function as they should. The handle can be started on a round piece of wood of approximate size and the design allows it to shape as it is forced downwards making a tight fit. The bit bites quickly and cuts and clears wood effectively. Doesn't weigh alot so packs easily and neatly.

Got a pack of 4 augers. They are packaged individually in nicely labelled bags. Since they have no handle, they pack down to a nice small size. Just grab a branch and fashion a handle when needed. I ended up making a nice handle with a dowel to satisfy my OCD. There's enough room in the baggy for the handle to live with the auger. I used the 1" auger to bore a Swedish torch out of a log. It went very fast, and the log burned very effectively! So simple! The next task will be to attempt some fieldcraft joinery with one of the smaller augers.

WOW.. I was really impressed with this set. They each come in their own plastic sleeve and had a light coating on them and arrive in great condition. They are definitely heavy duty and I cannot wait to take these out in the woods on my next camping trip. They are great for some camp craft and can be very practical. They are heavier and more durable than simple ones I have had in the past. Nice set.
