  • 6 months and it will not turn on
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
The sander worked great for 6 months. Dust extraction is good, runs smooth and sands well. Went to use it today plugged it in no lights no beep nothing will not turn on. Now i have to go through warranty, too much hassle for a sander that costs so much should last more than 6 months.

  • Excellent product
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I upgraded from the Bosch 5" ROS to this one, and it was the best investment I've made in a long time. Very low vibration, very fast sanding, quiet, and excellent control. Note that this sander is designed to be operated with a vacuum or dust extractor. It will overheat if you do not have the airflow from a vacuum system helping to cool it. As far as dust port attachments go, I've managed two ways: 1) Both of the Dust Right hose kits (the flex one and the other blue one) have fittings that connect nicely to the port on this. 2) The connection for the Bosch dust extractor hose won't mate directly with the fitting on the tool, but if you purchase the 3M Filter Bag Adapter (3M part number 20453), it will allow other fittings to slide over it. I find option 2) works better for my dust collection set-up and will likely be the best solution for a few others. I spent some time on the phone with a couple of different 3M product specialists, and they were quick to point out that this sander is designed to run best with the net sanding discs. If you aren't already set up with these, plan on buying some 3M cubitron net sanding discs (the best), Mirka net sanding discs, or some other variety of net sanding discs to go with it. Avoid using sanding discs that obstruct airflow over the dust collection ports on the pad. The net sanding discs allow this tool to accomplish two very important objectives: 1) better dust collection and 2) cooling air flow to keep the motor from overheating. Finally, buy an interface pad set. The Mirka interface pads work best. If you don't, you will be replacing the included 3M "Clean Sanding" hook & loop backer pad that comes with the tool more often than you'd like. The Mirka interface pad kit (Mirka part number 9955) is the most affordable option I found, and it fits the hole pattern on the 3M "Clean Sanding" backer pads perfectly. Gripes: 1) 3M should just include the dust port bag attachment in the box. This part makes life much easier when fitting dust hoses to the tool. 2) The documentation isn't clear enough concerning the importance of using net sanding discs and a vacuum system for tool longevity. The consumer is left to discover this on their own. 3) 3M should include interface pads in the kit (at least one) and update documentation to warn that when using net discs, the hooks on the backer pad will wear and fail more quickly leading to premature backer pad replacement. Summary: Great tool, would buy again, and I do recommend this to friends and colleagues. 3M could have done better with a more comprehensive package with respect to accessories and literature. Do not run this tool without a vacuum attached to it - this will cause premature tool failure due to lack of cooling air. ... show more

  • Good, not perfect.
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
The handle on this thing is FAT. you better not have small hands, or you will get very fatigued using this, Power is good. I run a production shop, and one complaint I get is that when you press the button, it takes almost a full second to respond and spool up. When you are trying to use it on multiple edges and flats on wood surfaces, you notice this. And you can't just let it rip, it will naturally overspeed and grind the product. Price is good but will likely get relegaged to a backup position and go with another Mirka unit. ... show more

  • Love it
Size: 5 in, 3/32 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I’m a tradesman sanded more than I care to remember but what I do remember is being completely coated with dust every time I’ve sanded anything even with a sander that has holes and dust connector and mask or respirator fitted properly you’re still sucking dust with this sander hooked up to a dust extractor I can change the respirator for a light mask and the residual dust on the table is not enough to fill thimble and it made short work of the finish which was quite nice so win win win and price was 1/2 what the other brand cost I didn’t need to buy a specialized extraction unit to power it so toss in a couple more wins the guy not covered in dust loves it ... show more

  • Worked great….. until it didn’t
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
Best sander I’ve ever used. Low vibration not real noisy. Way more than I ever expected to spend on a sander but it came highly recommended. Then one morning it wouldn’t come on. I tried it in several outlets and tried a different tool in the original outlet. Of course Amazon said it was past the return date. I called 3m and he recommended I call Amazon customer support. They have taken it back but are very slow with the refund. Also want to charge me a restock fee?? Once everything settles I will order another one. I hope this problem has been solved. ... show more

  • Mindblowing when it works but NOT built to last.
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
The media could not be loaded. I wanted to love this sander since it has the potential to be the best 5" sander available right now. There really aren't many options for 5-inch sanders with a 3/16" (5mm) stroke. Paired with their 3M Cubitron II sandpaper, this thing cuts fast, unlike anything else on the market. It has everything going for it: lightweight, little to no vibration, quiet, high sanding stroke, and excellent at extracting dust. But.. I gave it two chances, and both units failed in the same way. The sander would turn off automatically while in use. The first one kept turning off after three months of weekly occupational use. I thought maybe it was just a faulty early adoption unit, so I exchanged it. The next one worked well for around six months, but then it started turning off a few seconds after sanding any surface again. It might be due to overheating with electronics, or a power draw issue that can't be fixed. Either way, it's useless at that point and a costly disappointment. ... show more

  • Serious reliability Issues - Dead Again
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I have purchased 2 of these in the last 5 months. They have both failed within 3 months of purchase. I have spoken with the people at 3M multiple times and they are aware that there are design issues with the electronics. This sander comes with a premium price and just isn't ready for prime time. Check out the 1.8 rating on the 3M web site if you want more evidence. I got my sander back from 3M service and it died within 3 weeks. I'm beyond upset about how bad the reliability is for this sander. STAY AWAY ... show more
