I got this to help tighten up wire for a chicken run. It works very well, you do need some hand strength to tighten it, but it really helps you to pull the wire taught and keep it there while you secure it. Nice product!

My property is surrounded by barbed wire fence of varying ages and thicknesses. My cows are constantly testing for, and finding, weak spots in the fence so I am getting to know my neighbors. 😀. I keep this tensioner tool in my truck as they have proven to be super helpful when the problem with the fence is sagging wires. With one or two of these tensioning pieces and the tensioning tool, fence repairs can be handled much more quickly and with fewer cuts and abrasions than any other method I have found. I keep a piece of steel pipe also as the better quality thicker barbed wire can be difficulty to twist with just the tensioning tool. The extra leverage from a piece of pipe resolves that issue. I sometimes find that a tensioner is helpful even when I have to splice in a new piece of barbed wire. No matter how hard I try, I can never seem to tie a knot in the line that will keep the wire tight after removing the fence strainer. However, a twist or two with one of these tensioners easily tightens my repair, forcing the cows to find the next weak spot.

This is the third or fourth fence tightener of this style that I've tried, and this is the first one that failed miserably. These tighteners are meant to hold their shape while you wrap some of your loose fence wire or barbed wire around one end of the tightener, then hook the other end over the remaining fence wire in order to hold the tightener in place and keep it from unwinding. You use a simple tool to hold the tensioner, and get some leverage for winding. I got concerned when I loaded these tighteners on their applicator and noticed how much thinner they were than the ones I usually use (first picture). The second picture shows the applicator, which you slide one loop of the tensioner into and hold in place with. a thumbscrew. Even though this requires an extra step from just sliding an applicator tab through a loop, it seemed like a reasonable option, especially because the applicator is so much shorter than I'm used to and so gives you less leverage for turning. Unfortunately, the tensioners themselves proved to be the weak link, collapsing an twisting when applied to standard barbed wire (third and fourth pictures). I tried these tensioners on the thinner wire of my field fences as well as some lighter barbed wire I have on other fences and got the same results. I suppose I could try getting two turns of wire onto one tensioner, but sometimes the tensioner slips off the wire because of the way it deforms and is worthless. Better to simply find a tensioner that works properly. I do not recommend this product.

Using this to tighten a 4 foot metal fence roll while attaching it to steel posts and it worked pretty well. The handle seemed to want to flex a bit and I'm not sure it would handle any really heavy duty stiff wire.
