  • A Great Upgrade, I Highly Recommend
Size: 8.3 Inch
These brake extenders are a great upgrade for the wheelchair occupant as well as driver giving both ease of use. The brake extenders fit over the original brakes, so installation is super easy. The construction of the extenders is really sturdy. They are heavy weight and heavy duty. They are the perfect length to allow the wheelchair occupant to apply the brakes themselves without having the brake handles intrude into the armrest space of the chair. They don’t stick out any further to affect doorways and they don’t interfere with collapsing the wheelchair for loading/unloading into a vehicle. The brake extenders have a nice amount of vinyl padding around the ball end for comfort. While not as robust as some I’ve had, it is definitely adequate. For the cost of the brake extenders, I definitely think buyers are getting their money’s worth. Brake extenders are one of the first upgrades I make when getting a new wheelchair and I highly recommend this product. ... show more

  • Need more installation guidance
Size: 8.3 Inch
These handles are fine but not great. There are not enough instructions for installation (even though it would seem easy, it's not - one needs to know whether to do remove the existing rubber cover or not and what to do if the shapes of the poles aren't exactly the same). The rubber coating at the end of these handles is fine but not nearly as soft/comfortable as the ones that came with the wheelchair. The handles do function just fine and are quite thick and sturdy. They're not flimsy, which is good, and we like the length. It's the assembly and cushioning that we think make it earn only 3 stars. ... show more

  • GOOD QUALITY BUT WRONG FIT FOR ME.
Size: 8.3 Inch
I like how sturdy these extenders are. The metal seems quite strong. They are a bit on the heavy side, but once they are on the chair’s brakes, they will be strong enough to push and pull them, to get the brakes securely locked. The angle in the extenders could make it easier to grab onto them. My current extenders are straight, & I would have liked a bit of an angle. (I lost one of them, so I needed a new set.) When I got these extenders, I could not find any size info regarding the opening; I only saw length info. Unfortunately for me, they do not fit onto my wheelchair’s brakes (they are too small). I use the Tracer SX5. My husband considered using some tools to widen the opening, but the metal is quite thick and really strong, so I’m not sure he can do anything with it. I will hold onto them and maybe they will fit my next manual wheelchair. ... show more

  • Great idea, poor product execution
Size: 8.6 Inch
My mother-in-law is pretty much wheelchair bound. I do the repairs and maintenance on her chair. She is short of stature and has mobility issues, so when I saw these brake handle extensions, it seemed like a great idea. In reality, less so. To start with, the wheelchair brake handles have 90° edges. In other words, if you look at it from the top, the cross-section is rectangular. These extension handles have an oval cross-section. Not only that, but the opening that is supposed to slip over the wheelchair brake handles is quite narrow. Much more narrow than the wheelchair brake handles. Some of the cheaper wheelchair brakes use a thinner, steel handle, as opposed to the nice aluminum ones she has. To install these, I had to slip the rubber grips off the end of the extension tubes, and then beat them with a rubber mallet. Installation was not easy. It took quite a few good blows to seat the handle. In doing so, it rotated the brake handle clamp downward on the wheelchair frame. I then used the rubber mallet to whack the brakes back in place. Unfortunately, the second brake that I did this to broke and fell off. I am now buying her a matched set of brakes with pre-installed rubber extension handles. In the meantime, she has been making do with one brake, which may be unsafe. I am going to attempt to temporarily fix her other brake, and reinstall it, so that she has two brakes, while I wait for the new set to arrive. Since her chair is not an uncommon design, it would seem that there should be a couple of different type of extension handles offered; one for thick aluminum brake handles, and one for thin steel. I can take the blame for being hasty while installing these extensions, and damaging the brakes. Realistically, they should be removed from the chair, the tubes modifed, then installed while the brakes are on a work bench, then re-installed on the chair. However, another area where these lack, is that they are just plain too long. And, they need to have a bend in them so that they sit more straight up when installed. I have since seen some brake extension handles that do have this bend. Without the bend, these handles stick way out at an angle, and make the wheelchair too wide to really get through a door easily. If they had a bend, and sat more straight up, they would clear a doorway just like before they were installed. Lastly, the plastic grips on the end of the tubes are very thin vinyl, providing almost no cushion. They look inland feel cheap.. These could be improved in several ways, and just charge a couple dollars more, and they would be vastly superior and well worth it. As they are, they’re a great idea, but they fail in actual use. ... show more

  • works perfectly on a Drive "Blue Streak" wheelchair!!
Size: 8.3 Inch
My mother's assistants have been having problems reaching the brakes to lock her chair from behind her. I ordered these in hopes of solving the issue, and they work perfectly! Installing them was super easy, just pulled the original rubber pieces off and slid these on, pushing them down as far as they go. They fit like a glove and would require a pretty strong tug to take them back off. They have an angle to them that tucks them out of the way when they are in the unlocked position so my Mom doesn't have an issue with hitting them when she's reaching something. ... show more

  • Not as Easy as I'd Hoped
Size: 8.6 Inch
I was hoping that these could save my dad's hands from bruising when he engages/disengages the brakes on his wheelchair. Unfortunately, the brake handles have a rubber covering on them that would need to be cut off to remove - and without knowing that these will 100% work - I am hesitant to do so. It would seem that these would be incredibly functional, and would work well. ... show more

  • Solid pieces
Size: 8.6 Inch
Quality replacement piece for wheelchair chair breaks, but none of the screws or instructions on how to replace them so make sure that you know how to do it on your own and that you have all the other pieces that it requires.

  • Built well, but had to be modified to fit my chair
Size: 8.3 Inch
Had to modify to get it to fit my Tracer wheelchair. Took a lot of effort, strength at tools. However the steel was REALLY tough and almost impossible to bend so definitely built well.
