The 7 yr old figured it out. It was harder for the 5 yr old. It takes playing around with it, to figure it out. The instructions should be clearer and simpler. Once it is figured out it is a lot of fun. The video feature was especially fun.

I bought this little multifunctional microscope to use with my nephew and honestly it ended up being one of the cutest and most surprisingly fun gifts ever. He’s at that age where he’s curious about everything, so we spent the afternoon exploring anything we could get our hands on, leaves, fabric, rocks, even the Christmas tree branches. 😄 The microscope is super easy for kids to hold and use. The buttons are simple, the focus dial works smoothly, and the little panda design kept him giggling the whole time. The magnification is actually really impressive for a toy, he kept saying “WHOA!!” every time he saw something up close. It made me feel like the cool science auntie for sure. It’s lightweight, portable, and perfect for sparking curiosity without being overwhelming. We ended up taking it outside too, and it held up great. My nephew didn’t want to put it down! If you have little ones in your life, nieces, nephews, your own kids, this is such a fun and educational way to spend time together. Totally worth it. Pros: adorable, nice quality, easy to view details (once in the correct mode), Cons: The buttons/logic/user interface was a little too difficult for my 2 year old (who is generally advanced in these things). Actually I had to even look at the directions to understand how to swap between microscope/magicfication to camera to video. If you are in the wrong mode, it is hard to see what you want to see. For example, if you point it at someone across from you while it is in microscope/magnifying mode, you will just see a blur. If you have it in camera mode and put it down on a leaf, you will see only darkness. however, if you put it on the leaf in microscope/magnifying mode, you will see colorful cells (or pixels if you are looking at letters). That is cool. Sadly, the subtle difference between clicking and holding the button may be fine for an older child, but I was looking for an introductory magnifier for a 2 year old to look at bugs, etc. The other one offered separate larger button for swapping between modes and a gave a visual cue (a symbol showing a magnifying glass, or camera, or video) on the screen for each mode. This did not. The size of the buttons were too small for youngest kids too. It would difficult for very young kids to hit only one button at a time. Note that 1000 magnification apparently is subjective in these kid digital microscopes in general. So, It is fun, but I would not take it into a lab. ;) It was a hard decision between the two I looked at. In the end, I had to put simplicity of use over quality at this time. This is a cute first time microscope set. It’s a bit flimsy so I think It might be a bit easy to break. But for a first microscope I think that’s perfect. It helps kids become curious!
