  • DO NOT BUY THIS POOL HEATER
DO NOT BUY THIS POOL HEATER!! I LIVE IN WEST MICHIGAN AND THIS IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!! My neighbor has a pool that is a bit bigger than mine. They purchased this heater in June and were pleased, so I bought it. As soon as the evening temperature dropped below 70 degrees, the heater stopped working. I thought it broke and returned the heater defective. It was replaced but the replacement did not heat the water. It too is being returned as I do not need a $600 lawn ornament. I found this customer's review and wished I had read it through. Here are snippets. "I live in the northwest, where even when it’s hot during the day our nights are cool. I bought the heater to help keep the pool warm and not have quite so much temperature loss at night, allowing my pool to keep the heat it gains in the day. I let it run overnight and noticed that the temperature stopped climbing and even dropped during the night. The coils had frozen up completely and the cooler has not stopped to defrost. The temperature was only 50 degrees, so this was well within the operating temperature in the manual. UPDATE: This has some significant limitations that make it less than ideal for my situation here in the Pacific Northwest. I'm not expecting this to keep the water 80 degrees when it's 50 out, but I do expect it to be able to run when the temperature gets down in the 50s and 60s at night in the summer time - We're seeing days as high as 90, but the nights are still in the 60s up here, and the coil freeze-up is an issue. This is ideal for someone who has pretty steady temperatures in the spring and fall, that would allow you to stretch out the swim season with this heater. If it's only warm during the day and cool at night, this isn't going to be the heater for you." ... show more

  • Froze up immediately at night. Works moderately well above 65 degrees F.
I’m starting off unhappy with this purchase. After working with customer service and having them try to gaslight me into thinking the flaw is a feature - they're now simply trying to upsell me to a more expensive model. If the cheaper model doesn't work as advertised, I don't think I want to invest more money in a more expensive problem. (SEE UPDATE BELOW) I live in the northwest, where even when it’s hot during the day our nights are cool. I bought the heater to help keep the pool warm and not have quite so much temperature loss at night, allowing my pool to keep the heat it gains in the day. I hook it up direct to the pump, and it flows well, but, as expected , there’s too much water flow to make a noticeable increase in the outlet temperature. But the thermometer doesn’t lie, and my pool temperature started climbing right away. I let it run overnight and noticed that the temperature stopped climbing and even dropped during the night. The coils had frozen up completely and the cooler has not stopped to defrost. The temperature was only 50 degrees, so this was well within the operating temperature in the manual. Thinking it was a result of too much water flow from the pump, I adjusted the volume down to 1/3 of the original volume (about 400gph now) and restarted the heat pump. Immediately, the coils began to ice over. There’s nothing in the manual for this, and the problem is something that heat pumps have dealt with since shortly after they were invented. I’m not happy with this purchase at all. I’ll let it run during the day as the temperature rises and see how it functions but this is a serious design flaw. On the plus side, it has a water flow sensor built in that will shut off the unit when your pump turns off. This feature works well for me as I have my pump on a timer to run it a certain amount of time every day, and the heater can be left alone to turn itself off and on as the pump does. As it sits, I can only run it during the day, so it cuts the available heating time in half. When it warms up, the heater does a good job of getting the pool warmer, and the warmer the water gets, the better this seems to be able to heat it up (when my water was 68 degrees, the temperature difference was maybe a degree or degree and a half over that coming out of the heater, but now that the water is in the 70's it's definitely a bigger delta - even when its cool out in the morning) but it really boils down to the fan they've installed in this thing to move air through the coils - it's just not sufficient, which is why the coils tend to freeze up. This is ideal for someone who has pretty steady temperatures in the spring and fall, that would allow you to stretch out the swim season with this heater. If it's only warm during the day and cool at night, this isn't going to be the heater for you. I haven't tested this in cooling mode, but I expect it would work about as well - which makes for some interesting off-label possibilities, like for keeping the live catch well cool on my boat! In reality - I think this would probably work well for me if I had it in line with the solar heater, to pre-heat the water going into the unit, as it would save energy and improve efficiency. For others - I recommend this unit for someone who lives in an area that's generally warm all summer, and that you manage your expectations - it'll help make up for the temperature loss at night, and helps you maintain a steady comfortable swimming temperature all summer - but it's not going to work well to winter your pool, and once the daytime temps drop below the mid 60's, it's probably going to have issues. For the price, it's an affordable alternative, and it was easy to hook up. It features a flow sensor, allowing it to turn on and off in sync with your pool pump, eliminating the need for manual monitoring. I wish they had a better fan in it and better freeze protection, so it could work more efficiently and be left running when it gets cool out. I find that it works best when you cover the pool when not in use, as the pool seems to lose a surprising amount of heat to evaporation otherwise. I have an 8x12x50" oval pool, which is a bit bigger than recommended for this heater, but my expectations are modest. It gets the pool to a comfortable temperature in the evenings, so far, but we will see how well it works as the days cool off in the next couple of weeks. ... show more

  • Game changer
Love this heater! When it came, I wasn't prepared for it to be as heavy as it is. I ended up getting my husband to carry it in. We installed it with hoses we already had. It installed very easily and the instructions are crystal clear. The panel is very easy to read. We set it at 80 degrees. Within a few minutes, we could feel the difference in temperature running through in the inlet hose. It has been hooked up and running for about an hour now an the water temperature has risen about 6/10th of a degree. We have a 5200 gallon above ground pool. So, it will take a while to get it to our ideal temperature. It also comes with an app. We already had the app because we have several other devices that use the same app. But, once the wifi connected to the heater, it popped right up in the app. I will warn you, though. The "switch" button in the app is very sensitive. You might find yourself turning the heater on and off accidentally. LOL. I did a couple of times. But, it is very quiet. You really can't hear it running. Recommend this heater! You can see how we set it up in the photo. This is a temporary setup. But, it will work for now. We plan on running hard pvc pipes so it will be a permanent setup. ... show more
