This does work as a freestanding Lean to but be prepared to have more than two people to assemble if so. We were able to temporarily clamp the back legs to our gutters to hold it in place so the two of us could put it together. We were not sure of the exact placement until we had it together and made sure our door cleared it which is why we could not secure it in the beginning. I am extremely happy with this pergola. I installed it by myself, and it took me about 5 hours from start to finish. The instructions were clear, and all the parts fit together well. The frame feels sturdy, and the polycarbonate roof provides great shade while still letting in natural light. It also keeps the rain off the deck, making the space much more enjoyable in all kinds of weather. It completely transformed the look of my patio. I added curtains, and it looks amazing. I chose this brand over other similar gazebos because of the side support beams on both sides, which other brands didn't have—and I think I made the right choice. Without those side beams, the frame would feel much too flimsy. Overall, I’m more satisfied than I expected. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that one part arrived damaged, and a few of the pre-drilled holes for the screws were misaligned. This item was terrible. None of the peice fit together correctly. They way they have the internal threads for the screws to go in. Terrible design. Spent over 200 dollars buying better support screws, a drill bit to fix the miss alignment of holes, braces, and more! Takes 3 people. And the anchor screws were shabby! Had buy better ones. I wanted to return this but pick up was unavailable. It took two people to drop it off! I dont have a vehicle large enough to transport it! So I had to keep it and make it work. Worst buy. Instructions are terrible! Took 2 people to put together, but had to get a third person for part of it. At one point we started to just give up. Still didn’t get it put together based on the instructions, but it is up. We hope it’s stable enough to last through the winter.
