In 1993 Zoo Med developed the 1st UVB lamp for reptiles, which changed the way all Zoos, herpetologist, and hobbyists keep reptiles in captivity. The Zoo Med Reptisun T5-Ho Terrarium Hood is designed for reptile enclosures. It features a low-profile design, energy-efficient T5 HO electronic ballast, and a polished, curved reflector for optimal lamp performance. Many animals (most reptiles and birds) are able to utilize UVB to synthesize their own Vitamin D3. While some species are able to get Vitamin D3 from their diet (like snakes that eat whole prey items such as mice), most insectivores and herbivores must make D3 of their own. Vitamin D3 is responsible for calcium metabolism, and if there is not enough circulating vitamin D3 in the blood, animals are not able to use the calcium in their gut that comes from their food. Dietary calcium would then pass through the gut unused, and animals would be forced to take it from their bones, ultimately leading to a form of Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). MBD causes reptiles’ bones to become soft, resulting in severe deformities of the spine, broken legs and soft jaws. In severe cases, the internal organs can calcify and become hard—which can ultimately result in death. In addition to being a major component of bones and eggshells, calcium is involved in countless biological processes at the cellular level, including cell communication, muscle contractions and other functions that are essential to life. In the early days of keeping reptiles, little was known about the specialized lighting requirements of the majority of reptile species. During this time, reptiles housed indoors were not exposed to UVB, and as a result, would often develop Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).

  • Works
Bought this for my turtle tank, had to swap with a different tube light but it works great!

  • expensive but great quality
My old hood had ballast issues after about 7 years of use. This replacement is so much brighter (all that chrome in the reflector) and comes with a bulb.

  • Sad it didn’t work for me!
This light is fantastic! I only had to return it because it does not emit any heat.

  • Works great
Out of the box it wasn't working I was concerned that the lamp had been damaged in transit but as it turns out whoever put the light in put it in backwards. Once I got it turns around worked like a charm. I'm using this for a paludarium for white tree frogs and it is the perfect size with plenty of space on each side on the top of the enclosure. (Enclosure is 18inch wide) easy to change the bulb but you do need to be gentle so you don't damage the prongs. ... show more

  • works perfect
Light arrived just fine, it seems to be working great. I have only had it for a week, but I really wish it had come with hangers to hang in my Turtles enclosure. I have been just laying it on top.

  • Excellent product at a good price. Shipping was a disappointment.
Got this for my Chameleon and it is exactly what I expected, fits great and worked perfectly. Excellent price. My only complaint is it shipping USPS which made it arrive a day late because postal person would not deliver to apartment door so had to drive to post office and wait in line to get my order this was very irritating. ... show more

  • Fear the flicker
Worked for a couple weeks then the light started flickering. I assumed it was the bulb and lived with it for a while because some days it would stay on. I finally got tired of it being off most days so I got a new bulb today. It is also flickering :/ so it is not a bulb problem and my return window is closed. Very disappointed. If it flickers at all, return immediately, don’t waste time like I did. ... show more
