I really wanted a good quality coffee maker with a removable reservoir and a thermal carafe. This turns out surprisingly hard to find. My husband and I also tried the Ninja and Mr. Coffee before landing here and I couldn’t be more happy with our choice. This makes great coffee that is hot and doesn’t get burnt if it takes you a while to drink. That’s what I want in my coffee maker! The carafe is of slightly better quality than others I have tried in my non-scientific opinion. The reservoir being removable sounds small but is so, so nice. It saves you a step when filling the pot and you can put in the dishwasher. Our last coffee maker also had this feature and we couldn’t go back. We’ve had this now for 6 months, it is going great so far and just overall seems good quality. The only, only thing I have noted that could possibly be a drawback is that it takes a bit on the longer side to brew. 1) I think a good pot of coffee just takes an extra minute. 2) they have a quick brew feature if you’re in a hurry 3) we almost always use the timer feature so it is already made when I get up. Regarding carafes: I see reviews that mention the coffee going cold too quickly. None of the carafes on the market that I have tried are as good as people seem to expect in the reviews. All of the coffee makers that use this feature have some people complaining in the reviews. My opinion is that this one holds heat better than most. Coffee stays hot for a few hours, and like all carafes the less you open to pour the better it retains heat. If you don’t touch it, it will still be piping hot several hours later. The Mr. Coffee option for example, is legitimately much worse than this. I would say the ninja is more comparable but I would still give the edge here. Notes on the competition: The Ninja was unreliable and had some weird quirks. Quirks included having to press a button when you poured mid brew instead of being spring release so if you forget the coffee drips on the counter. Also if you wanted a “custom” amount of coffee (like 3 cups) you have to use a work around since they brew in predetermined whole pot/half pot increments. Also m if you didn’t place the carafe just-so the hole wouldn’t line up correctly and the coffee would spill into the counter during brewing. These quirks coupled with the fact it had a lot of extra features that we didn’t need, but still broke repeatedly soured us on the machine. We had the manufacturer replace 3 machines due to these defects. For example, our first machine the computer chip that read if there was water in the reservoir that broke. The coffee would not brew at all. Instead, giving us an “empty reservoir” error even if there was water. Another had a loud squeaky sound while brewing, and one hothead last had a different error that was caused by some other computer function that we didn’t need. Side note: now that I can compare, the ninja carafe didn’t keep its heat quite as well as this machine, or my old machine in my opinion although it came close. Mr. Coffee was at a more affordable price point, and that was the machine we used for almost 10 years before it broke down. We tried to order a new one since we liked the old machine so much. The reviews were much worse but I took my chances, and they must have switched manufacturers. Cheap quality. You can tell just by the feel of it. The carafe no longer holds heat well at all. But also, they glue the top portion of the carafe to the bottom. Both machines (the first one we had replaced) ended up leaking from the glue portion within a month. This was a problem with our first machine too, but it took about five years to show up and was very minor drips. This was a pretty significant leak very early on. The second machine the whole carafe top portion just came unglued and broke off entirely! We didn’t go for a third one and instead focused on trying to find a better quality machine. Sad to see the quality of that one go, but glad to have found this machine!!

I've been using this coffeemaker daily for the past three months. It is a good coffeemaker, assuming it has the functionality you are looking for. I would purchase it again if I were making the decision again, and recommend it. It's worth a quick description of myself so you can see whether my review is likely to be relevant to you. I don't consider myself a coffee snob. You'll never hear/see me slurping coffee with a spoon. I don't "cup" coffee, or really know what that means. When on a road trip, I am more than happy to drink gas station/hotel coffee or whatever is convenient. I don't care if anything is approved by the Specialty Coffee Association. However, I do have preferences and can taste differences. I drink coffee every single day and have for 35+ years, so for my purposes at home, I find it worth making a little effort to prepare coffee the way I like. I am of the belief that the beans (freshness and type) and grinder will make a bigger difference in the quality of your coffee than the coffeemaker. Yes, I believe there are bad coffeemakers, but it is very easy to find good ones through reviews, and at that point it becomes unnecessarily nitpicky. For that reason, I picked this coffeemaker because it was one of the few that had the key features I needed: 1) Removable water tank. This is just such a huge convenience. My previous coffeemaker had this, and now I can never go back. A must have, and this one works well (no leaks). 2) Programmable. It amazed me to find out that some coffeemakers aren't programmable. This is essential for me, as my wife has to leave very early for her job, so I prepare the machine to go the night before and it is ready when she is up. 3) Thermal carafe. Related to #2, our household coffee drinkers are often drinking at least an hour apart. The thermal carafe is very good, keeping the coffee very hot for hours without burning it due to a hot plate. Other notes: There are a few criticisms I read while researching that I wanted to address now that I have experienced it. 1) A prominent review website panned this coffeemaker for making bitter coffee. I can emphatically say that is FALSE. I hate bitter coffee. I don't know if it was the beans, or the grinding, or some other factor that led that reviewer to find the coffee bitter, but that's simply not the case at all in my experience. I do wonder how many purchases were changed based on that unfortunate review. 2) Loudness of the beeps. I don't find them particularly loud at all. Maybe if you are in a studio apartment or some other small space, it would seem unnecessarily loud. In a regular home, it doesn't seem loud at all. Just normal, like the rest of my appliances that beep. 3) Cleaning water reservoir. I've seen some say that the water reservoir is hard to clean and gets cloudy after brewing. Easy fix for the cloudy--take the lid off for 5 minutes after brewing. I also find cleaning to be easy. Not sure why some seem to have problems.

I am a fan of good coffee; I have been roasting my own beans since the 1990's, have a Pasquini Livia 90 and Rocky Rancilio for espresso, several presses and a Chemex for pour-over. For the workday mornings when we have to get out the door, I have been using a Capresso MT-500 which was on its last legs. I decided another auto drip was in order. I reviewed all the current high-end makers, but insisted on something with a thermal carafe, brewing temp of 200 degrees, pre-infusion, made more than 40 ounces of coffee and could brew with a push of a single button, since my wife does not like to fuss with the coffee maker. My research led me to this machine. I also looked at the Technivorm, Brazen, Cuisinart, Capresso, Breville and Bonavita offerings. I have had the Zojirushi for a week now. So far, it has been excellent. I measure the temp in the carafe at 188 degrees and in the coffee ground bed at 200-202 degrees and the coffee tastes excellent. I brew using the 'time-saver' option and a full pot of 50 ounces takes about 9-10 minutes to brew. The coffee is extracted very well without undue bitterness. I generally roast to a 'full city' or 'medium' (10-15 seconds into second crack) level so I don't roast out all the varietal character from the coffee. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for at least four hours; we have always finished the coffee by this point. It uses a 8-12 cup cone basket and I use Melitta filters rather than the included permanent filter; my wife does not like fines/sludge in her coffee. I am especially impressed by the large showerhead which gives an excellent even brew over the coffee grounds. Clean-up is easy since the filter basket and water tank lift right out for cleaning and filling. It is constructed well and does not appear flimsy. So far, this appears to be a winner. I will update this review as needed.

I have had this coffee maker for several months and overall it's pretty good. While there are a few improvements that could be made, if you are looking for a basic coffee maker that makes good coffee I would recommend this one. However, I don't think it is worth the regular price, but if you can get it on sale, it is worth it. Some things I like: Removable water reservoir - make is easy to fill without additional filling containers (because you should not use the pot to refill the water reservoir since it may have oils from brewed coffee). The removable reservoir also fits in my older refrigerator thru the door water dispenser! So I am able to get at least semi-filtered water. The Carafe keeps coffee hot for about 4 hours, and it is still warm for up to 8 hours (though your coffee may be bitter after that long). This maker gets the coffee to the correct (hot, 200 deg F) temperature and soaks the grounds really well. I have never seen dry spots in my grounds. The maker also pauses briefly to allow the coffee to bloom. Makes a reasonably flavorful cup of coffee. It's not quite as good a my Chemex or Aeropress, but it's pretty close for an automatic drip machine. Filter basket and holder are all removable for easy cleaning. Also includes a mesh filter basket which works well, but I use paper filters and those work well too. Has an auto start feature, but I have not used this as I like to grid my coffee fresh and don't really need it made ahead of time. But it's there if you need it! Some not so likable things: The coffee maker takes a while to brew a pot! By a while, I mean 10-15 minutes. While this may not seem like a long time, most brewing methods should not have the water in contact with the grounds for more than 6 minutes max. Although the brew time for this machine doesn't seem to affect taste too much. Most coffee comes out slightly more bitter than when I brew with my Chemex, but it is still pretty tasty. There is a "time saver" button, but I think this only bypasses the bloom feature which only seems to save 30 seconds or so. The carafe opening is too small making it a bit harder to clean. Plus there is a ridge where the lid connects to the stainless steel body which collects water and is nearly impossible to drain. Placing the pot upside down to drip dry over night will still have a bit of water trapped. It is easy to wipe this water out, but it would be nice if the water could drain out and drip dry completely. There is no carafe sensor. It is possible to brew without the carafe (yes, I have done it). The maker will brew and eventually overflow the filter basket causing a big mess. For the (regular) price of this maker, a switch for the carafe would be nice to prevent a huge mess. Yeah, I know this was my fault, but still would be nice. While you CAN pour yourself a cup while brewing...the filter housing and carafe have a well made shut off valve and has not dripped/leaked...you should know that IT DOES NOT STOP BREWING. So if someone poured a cup mid-brew and forgot to put the carafe back, you may be cleaning your counter! I have not used the iced coffee method, but there are lines on the water reservoir for doing so.

This is our second Zojirushi coffee maker. We have enjoyed our EC-BD15 for almost 10 years , but this unit may be on its last leg. I researched many coffee makers including the recommendations made by American Test Kitchen. ATK did not test this model. I was tempted by ATK's recommendation, but I decided to give Zojirushi EC-YTC100 a try. This did not disappoint. The coffee maker gives an option of faster brew time (Time Saver function), which is nice because this shortens brew time, and the brew time is closer to the recommendation by the Specialty Coffee Association (if you care about things like this). This make and model does not have the SCA endorsement, but I don't really care because we get consistent excellent brew results. We use more coffee than what Zojirushi recommends. If you use Zojirushi's table in its manual, the coffee:water weight ratio is almost 1:30. This brews weak coffee. The recommended ratio is around 1:20 or greater. We use about 1:18 ratio, i.e. 1 g coffee to 18 mL water; or if you are used to US imperial measurements, 1 oz coffee to 2.1 cups water (*** the cup here refers to your kitchen measuring cup and NOT the "cup" markings on the coffee maker. The volumes of "cup" markings on coffee makers vary widely among manufactures, but EC-YTC100's markings based on its manual is 1.5 L for 10 "cups" or 150 mL per "cup" marking or 0.6 standard kitchen measuring cup in the US). But you can always adjust to your taste. However, this present a potential problem. At maximum brewing volume of 10 cups (1.5 L), we would need 83 g of coffee (Zojirushi recommends 51 g for 10 cups). This may well be over their design capacity and cause the coffee grounds to overflow. We have not brewed at maximum as we stop at 8 cups (1.2 L) and use 67 g of coffee. EC-YTC100 claims a brewing temperature of 200 deg F, and I measured 196 F out of the "shower head". The "shower head" is the distribution of water as the hot water is dispersed over the grinds. This model has a piece that disperses the water and the water drips over the entire basket instead of a narrow concentrated stream. This allows for better percolation of the hot water through the grinds. With the cap on, the thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot all morning and well into the afternoon. I like this carafe model because the glass coffee model with a warmer tends to burn the coffee as it sits on the warmer. Attention to details is excellent as with all Zojirushi products. The shower head piece, the brew basket, and the water tank can all be easily removed and cleaned. The various silicone gaskets around the carafe cap and the valves can all be removed and cleaned if needed. The removable water tank is extremely nice for ease of filling. The permanent filter works well, but my wife still prefers using paper filter. Occasional descaling is needed using citric acid. The unit will alert you when it needs descaling. Do yourself a favor, buy food grade 100% citric acid in bulk, and you can buy it cheaply here at Amazon with resealable bag. Buy a cheap food scale (I bought Amazon brand for $10). Now you don't have to pay the outrageous price of Zojirushi branded citric acid (30g pouch). You can clean/descale to your heart's content. The scale is nice also to measure out your coffee. It's a kitchen gadget I didn't think I needed, but now that I have it, I really need it. Overall, we are very satisfied with this coffee maker, its design, functionality, and most importantly, the quality of the brew. With proper maintenance, I anticipate another 10 years of ownership.

Unfortunately, the biggest let down by Zojirushi. I absolutely LOVE their thermal travel coffee mugs - they keep your coffee hot all day long, so I figured their thermal coffee maker MUST be top of the line. Spoiler alert: this was a total fail. I followed all the instructions provided. Went to brew my coffee the next morning, after what seemed to be a very long time, it finally beeps that it's done. Comes to find out the machine had stopped brewing after 1 cup, leaving 7 cups of water in the reservoir. I thought maybe it was a one-time fluke, so I manually hit start again and it completed the cycle. The next day, my husband set the timer to brew. No issues there. It wasn't until we went to manually brew again that the machine did the same thing - stops after brewing one cup - yet it signals as if it went through the complete cycle. With the amount of money this coffee maker costs, sadly this underperformed. I wasn't going to take my chances to see if it would eventually get its act together, so I returned before the 30 days was up. I ended up going with the thermal Cuisinart and so far, (knock on wood!) it's been performing as I expected the Zojirushi to perform.

Reliable, always tasty coffee (Trager Brothers Coffee the best!), easy to clean. I wanted to wait a little bit before I wrote a review. I had to dial in the correct amount of coffee, which I love, so that I am using fewer grounds to get a smoother cup of coffee! I own a Zojirushi Rice Cooker, so I was curious and slightly confident in the brand, and I spent the money. It is a fantastic machine; 10 cups brewing is the perfect amount of coffee, it stays hot for a long time, and this is the main reason I bought this specific machine. I wanted a metal carafe. Does not drip when pouring, stays hot, and brews in either quick mode or slow brew for delicious coffee. I will update if anything happens, but I'm feeling great about this purchase.
