Great Insert for Cigars - in Calm Air

Like most cigar smokers, I suppose, I use a torch lighter most of the time out of sheer convenience and wind-resistance (and where I live, in South Texas, wind is an almost ever-present feature). However, it’s very easy to scorch a cigar with such a hot flame, imparting a change to the taste. For that reason, I find a soft flame lighter to be preferable. Problem is, standard lighter fluid can also impart a bad taste. This little insert is the best of both worlds. It lights a cigar evenly and quickly, without charring, and with no taste of lighter fluid. I like the heft of a metal Zippo and it just feels and looks classy. However, like any soft flame, it’s useless in even a slight breeze. Because of that, I’ll light up indoors and then head out to the porch (since smoking is verboten in the house, per domestic management) or just bring it out on a calm day. I’ve only been using it for a few weeks,, so tough to assess long-term reliability, but I use good butane so I’m hopeful it’ll hold up. I’ll revise my rating accordingly if necessary. So far, it’s great. Update 4/26/25: Still works great. A top-off with butane lasts a good while, and my example doesn’t have a crazy-tall flame like some reviewers report. Bonus: unlike torch lighters, you can take this through TSA checkpoints at the airport the same as a standard Zippo. I’m very happy with it.

It doesn't say on the ad but this is a Zippo brand insert and it works incredibly well and saves me all the trouble of having to put leaky fluid in my lighter. The most important thing about this lighter for me is that it doesn't have a wick and it doesn't use jet plane it uses a standard butane flame. What I wanted was a similar flame to what the Zippo normally has and this provides that for me. It isn't windproof but aside from that it is a flawlessly made beautifully crafted piece of machinery. I like it so much that I just finished ordering a second one now I have two Zippo butane lighters but here's the thing that's most important about this lighter that you won't find in most other letters. It does not have a piezo electric igniter. Instead true to the Zippo tradition it uses standard Zippo Flint. For me this just became my new favorite lighter again. And because of that I got my old unused wick style flint type Zippo and am upgrading it as well.

This insert produces a soft yellow flame like the lighter fluid inserts do. Fits my Zippo cases perfectly. Lasts about a week between refills. The flame is adjustable but is susceptible to trouble lighting and blow outs in moderate wind. Easy flint replacement. Only problem is there’s no identification of the gas adjustment screw so pay attention to the little pamphlet with the insert.

It works pretty well with a couple of caveats. First off, it works kind of like a BIC lighter, it still uses a flint and you have to spin the wheel and hold down the button to keep it lit. Not the end of the world but depending on the angle you will probably burn your finger a few times. It also only seems to hold enough fuel for 4 or 5 full pipes of smoking.

I think this is the second one I've purchased. There's two things I would change. First, there's no reason the flame can't be situated the same as their standard pipe lighter insert. Second, the lighter button shouldn't be "chromed" or covered in Zinc or whatever it is. It's WAY too slick and it's hard to hold the button down. Something textured and not smooth would be much better.

Works great! At first, then the trigger stiffens and irs awful.

At first it was working great. A month later it's gone on the "piece of htsi lighter pile". Lemme explain why. So zippo has been making lighters since 1932 bur they somehow didn't think to make the bottom to release gas as large and high up as possible to decrease the amount of time your thumb takes from striking the flint to releasing gas resulting in misfires. This problem got worse over a month of daily usage to a point where I got what I can only describe as "zippo thumb" and my entire thumb was hurting all bloody day. Basically what's happened is for some reason the button to release the gas went from tolerable and striking every time to now desperately flicking the thing 7-igiveup times to get any fire and requires a lot of strength on a tiny, greasy slippery nub that desperately wants to go back into resting position screw you and your smoke break. I expected WAY more from zippo. This isn't hard to get right it's clear as day that they could have made the gas release button stick out more for more leverage and raised it up higher so your hitting the gas before the spark is gone and hey maybe not make the gas release button from slick bloody chrome!!! It's profoundly stupid. Why it doesn't have a grippy finish I have no idea it needs some skateboard tape or something. People that are giving this a good review need to use it a couple times a day for a month and it starts to seize up and hurt your thumbs like mario party 64 but way worse it's quite painful. Zippo needs to iterate on this, they strike me as quite the lazy company. The stiffness of the button needs work but would be hugely mitigated by an overall larger gas release button. You can see how little there is to grab on to and if you have large hands forget it. Sure it doesn't leak but If I feel like I just slammed my thumb in a car door all day because of this pos we have traded one product breaking issue for another (vs thunderbird et al). They could hire me and I could solve this before lunch time and so could you, how hard is it to make the button bigger?! Just go and buy the cheapest zippo MPL mini(multi purpose lighter) you can find, not the large one it hurts your thumb too ffs. The mini is perfect though, had I know it existed when I bought this thing I wouldnt have bought this thing. There are no good options for making your zippo into a butane lighter that last more than a month if you actually plan to use it. MPL mini by zippo, it's not a zippo-zippo but it's a reliable, refillable, kinda big but not too big soft flame butane lighter by zippo. The one I got was half the price of this dumb piece of junk waste of 13 bucks and it's all metal and looks pretty nice. Get the graphite colored one the others are all kind of ugly colors imo. As for this insert, to quote t "The Critic" It STINKS!

I love it, confuses people at bars (which makes it even more fun)

I always say that Zippos were the OG fidget toys. That satisfying "clink" when it opened, all the crazy ways people have found to light it, they're the originals! I was a boyscout, I spent every summer camping growing up, so zippos have always been something I have always loved carrying. While I loved the original inserts, one thing I found as an adult is that I did not love is smelling like lighter fluid. As an adult that dosen't have as much use for a lighter, I also found that if I let my lighter sit for too long, the fluid dried up in the cotton. So I thought I was cursed to just use bics for my adult life. Now my zippo is part of my EDC again, and my pocket or backpack doesn't smell like lighter fluid! It holds a large amount of fluid, it took me 3 months to use mine up (non-smoker, avid candle burner, and some use from friends). Now, to explain why this is funny to watch people that have a few "adult beverages" use these inserts. This is butane, so it lights like a bic. You flick the steel and hold the button to release the gas in one motion. When you pull out a zippo in a sea of bic's though, people get nostalgic and they want to show off their tricks. They'll do something extra, and just aparks but no flame. I'll ussually let them go 2 or 3 times beofre I show them how to use it, it can be pretty entertaining to watch though!

So great product as a whole. It’s a lighter. It works. Just temper expectations on the role it will play. I purchased to use for cigars. I like the soft flame more than a torch and the typical Zippo fluid is a no go thanks to that petroleum smell. Have tried a few generic brands of soft flame lighters/inserts over the years but they never impressed me. Saw that Zippo finally listened to their customers and made one so I had to try it. Once it arrived I followed all the instructions in the packaging. Simple enough to fill and use. Lit on the very first try but thank god I wasn’t lighting a cigarette. The flame was 3”+ high. Immediately thought I needed to adjust but once I realized it didn’t offer the ability to, I became extremely disappointed. Let it sit for a day to see if the internal pressure just needed to stabilize. Nope. Purged some thinking maybe I overfilled even tho it’s not really possible. Nope. No change. So at this point I’m not really sure if I’ll keep it or give it to a friend. Look, it’s a Zippo. I’m sure it’s reliable and will work great for years. Snap the wheel and button and it fires right up. Will work well for any other number of uses, but for cigarette smokers, just be wary of the size of the flame before putting it towards your face. It will work for sure for cigar smokers but touch ups will be hit and miss so know that going in before you spend the money. Hopefully Zippo adds an adjustment feature in future designs but right now it’s just another run of the mill lighter.
