  • One problem
Style: Black Crackle
I know this might not seem like it is worth such a low review, but this is not cheap and I expected level of quality. On the bottom on the lighter the coating went further than it should on one side . Like I said this is a small thing but I have bought many zippos over the years and never saw one with a flaw like this. To me it was just a little too sloppy for my taste. I would guess this was a fluke and I would not say don't buy it. One star might be too harsh, but I expected more from zippo ... show more

  • Zippo Quality
Style: Black Crackle
Zippo quality. Other reviewers write great reviews; I've carried Zippos 40 years through a couple of brush fires and a war. If they had any faults, I would have quit them long ago. Only fault I've ever encountered was the hinges working loose. Sent them back to Zippo & they fixed them for free. The finish on Zippos are not guaranteed, which don't bother me. I'm not a collector or a lighter connoisseur; just use them to put fire to task at hand until they wear out.. The black finish on this one is only slightly rough. It is obvious that it is some type of finish applied to a brass version of the Zippo. A person needs to fray the wick to get it to light first strike. BTW, I've fueled Zippos with everything from naptha to real gasoline in the field; American ETOH gas doesn't work worth a crap. I don't know of a true Zippo user who hasn't had a Zippo fuel burn on their leg from leaking fuel. I have used reclaimed flints from disposable lighters. My Zippos have never let me down as long as I kept them fed & cleaned properly. ... show more

  • Great lighter with a history behind its unique finish.
Style: Black Crackle
It's a great lighter that has a very unique finish. It's sort of rough, but smooth at the same time. Built as well as all Zippo's, it's made to last. And, of course, they will fix it if it ever breaks, which is a throwback to the good old days when companies stood behind their products. One thing I always do when I get a new Zippo is to take the filler and wick out and repack it (with the same filler and wick). I do this because it looks like they pack them in about 30 seconds, so it's not really done in the best way. It's no biggie, though. It's simple to do. I just repack it so that the wick snakes down through the filler, but in a way that makes it easy to pull a little more wick out when it becomes burned through and you need to expose a new bit, though this takes a VERY long time if you keep the lighter filled and never attempt to light it when it's dry. Doing that ensures that you may not have to expose new wick for years. Overall, it's a great lighter and a very unique finish that has a very interesting history behind it. The finish was borne out of necessity during WWII. The metals they normally used were not available, and what was available corroded very easily, so they came up with a black, baked on finish that was very durable and protected the metal. Pretty neat. A beautiful and durable lighter that you won't regret buying. ... show more

  • garbage
Style: Black Crackle
I was able to get my to light about 4 times and since then it will not light again. I've made sure it's full of zippo fuel, it sparks but the wick will not light.. I was going to buy a replacement wick, but it's just not worth it. I have other lighters (I use for backpacking to light my camp stove) that work fine and mini bic's are cheap so.. This'll make a great gift to give someone I don't like, so there's at least that. ... show more

  • Great scratch resistance, but sounds different
Style: Black Crackle
Occasionally, I'll carry a Zippo in my pocket alongside my keys. This normally leads to scratches and scuffs, but the black crackle finish has held up much, much better so far. My only nitpick is the sound is slightly muted with the black crackle finish (it doesn't ring out quite as much when flicked open). ... show more

  • Fail.
Style: Black Crackle
These are not Dad's Zippo. The Flint wheel will frustrate you and make you toss it against a brick wall at some early point to spare yourself future grief. I gave two of these up over time and just use 1.00 lighters. I'm way ahead now. Looking like a fool out in public going strike strike strike strike strike strike strike strike strike. You'll get high on the lighter fluid going through all that and end up with an unlit bowl or cigarette. ... show more

  • Basic, functional, an absolute must
Style: Black Crackle
I've grown up with Zippos. I've restored them for other people too. They are very reliable if you do a little simple maintenance. We recently had a power outage and I realized I had nothing to light candles with. I felt foolish. Now I've got that covered. I bought lighter fluid, wicks and flints too. The black crackle finish is utilitarian. Having a flame at hand is a basic necessity. Glad I bought this. ... show more

  • Love my Zippo
Style: Black Crackle
I'm not a smoker. But I've wanted a Zippo my entire life as I had uncles/grandpas/etc that have owned them and they just have a certain style to me that you don't see in many products anymore. So 30 something years after seeing my first Zippo, I finally break down and buy one. I'm not disappointed. I love the "Black Crackle" finish as a person with OCD that gets driven nuts by fingerprints, and it works beautifully for lighting candles or other people's smokes. If I had any complaint, it would be I found no directions came with it. I went to a local tobacco shop and they sold me the fluid needed and showed me how to fill it, replace the flint if needed, etc. All around worth it. The fluid is cheap, replacement parts aren't bad either, and I feel a bit classier for not whipping out a dollar store special generic lighter :-). ... show more
