We got this Zinus 8" frame to support the layered alternative to a conventional mattress we got for our 1940s twin bed. Our layered alternative is a new 4" traditional (all cotton) futon topped with two pieces of foam (1" high density, 2" memory) and a thick cotton mattress pad. The mattress ended up higher off the floor than we expected (a short person's feet sort of dangle). Even with frequent turning, if this futon is used regularly it'll compact some, so the 8" will work alright. But if we add another bed like this, we will probably get the lower profile 4" frame. Delivered in about a week, the frame was well packaged and not as heavy as we feared. A middle aged woman carried it in easily. It came with instructional diagrams (no text, so it's universal, language wise) – not that we needed them. The assembly steps are obvious. It went together quickly and easily. The frame's wood is straight, clean, and smooth with no obvious flaws. Presumably the original plan was for buyers to attach the four support pieces to each other using the included screws. Instead, two of the corners came pre-connected with hinges. Though this made assembly a wee bit faster, we would have preferred the screw method because the (low end, sort of flimsy feeling) hinges are on the loose side. Truthfully, this is probably irrelevant because once in place, the frame isn't going anywhere. One note of caution though: make sure to support the hinged pieces along their full length so that one (probably the short side) doesn't flop down and stress the hinge. Otherwise the hinge could twist or break and you'll be drilling your own hole and reaching for one of the extra screws that is included. The slats, for the twin size anyway, come in two sections. The slats in each section are connected together with a flexible fabric tape (if I'm remembering right). Once the sections are unfurled, small pieces of Velcro on the bottom attach to corresponding Velcro pieces on the top the frame itself (the sides pieces that are now connected). The slat sections went into place easily (with only minor effort required to match up the Velcro) and seem perfectly sturdy. Instead of installing the cover, we opted to "dress" the frame with a spare fitted sheet made of microfleece for now. We thought the pressed (not woven) fabric/papery material that forms the cover's sides (similar to what most reusable, biodegradable shopping bags are made of) might prove too tempting for our cats' claws. Now we wonder not only if the wood itself might be even MORE tempting, but also if the cats may decide to climb up through the frame's openings and perch tree-limb style on the bed's original slats, which we left in place (probably unnecessarily, as it turns out). This likely won't hurt the cats OR the frame, but it could present a problem on vet visiting day! So, the assembled box frame is sturdy and fits perfectly where the bed's slats normally go. Guests have reported sleeping comfortably on it, and test naps have been successful. Even though this product had ZERO Amazon feedback when we ordered it, we chose to go with the Zinus version instead of the other – heavily reviewed – manufacturer's version because it cost a little less and looked like it was made at LEAST as well. And we like supporting new vendors if we can. We highly recommend this to anyone who, like us, has opted out of expensive, often unsatisfactory mattress/box spring sets.

This was exactly as described in the listing. I have the queen-size, 4 in. There have been questions about the number of slats, the space between slats, the method of fastening of the slats, and whether there is a center lengthwise support. I don't recall for sure, but I'm going to say there are 12-13 slats forming the top surface with 2.5 - 3 inches between them. They support a memory foam mattress well, and with the cover on the foundation, there is no sag of the foam between the slats at all. I also will support a conventional mattress well. As mentioned in some reviews, the assembly instructions consists of 4 pictures with NO text whatsoever. That is probably more than necessary, as the assembly is pretty obvious; but it would have been nice to have some markings on the pieces or notes in the instructions to provide reassurance that it is being done correctly. Yes, the cover is EXTREMELY tight and difficult for one person to get it pulled into position to zip it easily, but it can be done. Since it comes disassembled, it can be maneuvered up stairs and around corners easily; but WARNING if that is your primary reason for choosing this, the cover comes with a notice on it that it cannot be removed, and that may be true. I didn't try to take it off after I finally got it completely zipped, but that would be necessary if your intention was to disassemble it to move it out in the future. Back to the slats - they come with two sets of half the total fastened on to another by a heavy Velcro tape. One set has a small hole drilled on each end of one slat to fit into a dowel that is in place on the side rails. Then the Velcro hooks onto a matching strip that is fastened to the top of the side rails. This is all the fastening there is for the slats (no screws, etc.), but it secures them sufficiently once the cover is in place. There were questions about noisiness - the foundation once assembled produces no noise and is strong enough to support a couple of 200 lb adults with no concerns. On our bed, this foundation is resting on 4 normal bed slats (that each have a center floor support leg) that are on a ledge of the bed side rails. There is some noise getting into or out of the bed, but not much; and this would be true of any foundation or box spring. Yes, on the queen-size there is a center lengthwise rail that provides support for the middle of the slats so there is no center of the bed sagging even with a total foam mattress. Others have mentioned their surprise at the quality of the supplied Allen wrench and small ratchet. Yes, they are good quality and definitely up to the assembly task. The 2 spare assembly bolts provided were reassuring. I hope this helps you decide. I'm pleased with mine.

This came in a box about 10" square and 7' tall. It was like an IKEA put together but this one was much, much simpler because the instructions were in english and with detailed pictures. You assemble (the 5 star rating) the two pre made ends to the two side rails and then you insert the middle rail using the supplied screws and a mini ratchet that came in the box. Once the main frame and middle rail were assembled and tightened we moved it onto the bed platform. We then installed the included slats that were connected to strips of Velcro. To get you started there were two dowels in the side rails and two matching holes in one of the two groups of slats. The first group of slats was so easy, put first slat onto the dowels hold it in place while stretching the remainder out and laying them down onto the Velcro on the side rails. The second set of slats was a bit trickier because you had to guesstimate the gap for the first slat before stretching out the remainder. Once you were comfortable all of the slats were firmly seated in the Velcro they also included a cover. Once you figured out which way to orient it and how much to have overlapping the top it was a matter of stretching the cover over the entire assembled foundation (the 4 stars) and zipped it closed. (like putting an overstuffed pillow into a case with a zipper all the way around). All in all this wood foundation is a quality product. It was packed very well and went together with a minimum of effort. With the cover on it, aside from it being only 4" tall it looked like a conventional box spring. With the bed platform (11" tall) and this 4" box spring the mattress height is just right. We first tried using a convectional box spring but combined with the mattress you would need a step ladder to get into bed. With this 4" wooden slat box frame the bed height is appropriate for adults who would be the main users of this guest bed. If you are going to a platform vs. conventional bed frame this 4" box spring is the bomb.

Very easy to put together. Did by myself in less than 15 min. Part of wood broke a bit but I feel it will still be fine. Rest of wood fine. The box spring cover fits super snug and the zipper was missing teeth which cause the zipper to not go past this point and zipper was broke easily Contacted company and hopefully will send replacement cover but they were easy to deal with. Will update if any problems. I have a queen bed and feel it will serve purpose well

(Queen 8") After reading the various reviews I was worried about this product. This is an excellent product for the money. I saw where someone put it together in 20 minutes. It took me about 1 hour over all but I wasn't in a hurry. I made sure to square up the frame on a flat area of the floor and get the screws started part way in the 4 corners (8 screws). I tested the center section in both directions and 1 direction fit better than the other so I used that direction and started those 4 screws. I then worked in diagonals tightening the screws, like torquing the lug nuts on a wheel, not trying to gel all the slack out in 1 try but allowing the frame to settle into the attachment points. By the 3rd go round the screws were snug and the box frame square and tight. The slats were straight forward and easy to install and were spaced 2 1/2" apart. One reviewer tacked down the boards, good idea if you're into fixing every nuance, I almost did this, and may do it if I hear the slats chatter but so far so good. Fitting the cover. I was worried about this but was surprised it was perfectly tailored to the frame. again it took a little time to line up. I worked around the base of the frame adjusting and lightly stretching the bottom of the cover. When it appeared that the corners were equally aligned with the corners of the frame, and the seems aligned with the edge of the frame I slipped the top corners up and onto the top of the frame and it easily zipped up without incident. So I would say don't shy away from this foundation. if you're willing to put in a few extra minutes in patiently putting it together it will be solid.

I was in need of a box spring to lift a mattress a few inches, but prices at the mattress store were crazy for what i needed. I was going to make one, but then i found this for less than my time and materials would have been. This is a good compromise. It's pine, so a soft wood. Don't crank down on the screws. Clearly put together on a jig. Decent for and finish, but once in the cover it looks store bought. It came we'll packed, the screws and Allen wrench were in a blister pack, with two extras. The literature was nicely packaged. All the wood was protected. Dead simple picture instructions, and "UP" clearly labeled on ends. The slats are daisy chained together with Velcro, and one end fits over dowl pins, then you just unfold and lay down for perfect spacing. The cover is really snug, took a bit of tugging, but it's tight and good quality. The fabric is nice and thick. I did not brace the slats. The weight distribution of the mattress won't break them, and they have a little give like a box spring would. I needed a 4 inch lift without blowing a wad of cash on a box spring, and this was a too easy plug and play solution.

We’ve had our queen-sized hybrid mattress for about 4 years. We brought it home and not knowing any better, placed it on our old box springs. After about 2 nights, I started having my doubts, but thought I’d give it a chance. Life got in the way and we missed the return window, so we were stuck with this expensive, too-soft, hot-sleeping behemoth. 4 years later, I decided I was tired of having to almost pole vault into bed because ours was so high, and decided to order a shorter box spring. So this Zinus foundation came into our lives. It was so easy to assemble, took me about 30 minutes, put it on the bed frame, and dropped the mattress on it. I could tell a difference the minute I crawled in bed. It felt firmer, my behind didn’t sink into the mattress, my waist didn’t sink down when I turned on my side, I could actually sit down on my bed instead of giving a little jump then having to leverage myself up with my arms. Same thing next night, and the next. I fell in love with my mattress again, all due to this foundation. My mattress doesn’t seem to make me as hot, no squeaky springs, no bouncing around when my partner gets in bed or rolls over, and my fitted sheet doesn’t seem to pull away from the corners as badly. Money definitely well-spent, and even better because I managed to snag it on a limited-time deal. Knowing what I know now, I would gladly pay full price for it.

Okay, so I only gave this 3 stars BECAUSE I love it and I am upset with this! So first off the 4 inc box spring was all extra height needed for my bed! 8 inc would have been to high for me. Here is what I love. It was so easy to put together - took not even 10 mins to put together UNTIL here is what I am upset with....The cover that protects everything is way way way to tight. They should make them so it can be perfectly closed up! I broke my zipper trying to get it closed but it was so snug around the box the zipper busted. I was able to get the zipper back on track and try again and got half way around and it just busts open. So I had to nail the cover protector to the box and just be done with it! For the price they should make a better protector around the box like just a smidgen bigger so it can at least close all the way. Overall though it's great extra height I needed, easy to assemble and haven't had problems with it except the protector.
