  • Excellent vise! Great value for your money!
I was building a Moravian workbench, but wanted to use a modern face vise instead of a leg vise. I picked this because it was light enough for me to attach to my bench top but still have the portability features of a Moravian bench. I was very pleasantly surprised by how well this vise works, and the value for quality of the parts. All the parts mate and align well. The instructions have some typos (e.g. the page with the instructions for the 10" version refers to the product with the 9" model number), but if you follow the instructions you will get a nicely installed vise with extra allowance that they recommend you have. (I was originally skeptical and added extra allowance, and ended up with double when I first did a dry fit. So the instructions where right on.) ... show more

  • Take your time. Check your measurements. Install takes time. Take your time. Check your measurements. Install takes time.
Solid and great woodworking addition for end of my workbench. After reading reviews I knew I’d need to carefully think through the install, make mods to bench to accommodate the vise, drill holes in correct location. Don’t rush, be patient. Think every step through twice. Took me 1 1/2 - 2 hours to complete install but no regrets. Has added so much versatility to my bench. Wish I’d done this years ago. No handle provided. Used 1” dowel and had to sand to fit. Then bought round knobs from hobby store and bored to fit handle. Not a quick release but spins easily to open /close. ... show more

  • Good Vice for a Good Price! A few smaller issues Good Vice for a Good Price! A few smaller issues
I originally bought the 9' vise for my "traditional" workbench project back in 2020, but when I went to finally install the vise in winter 21/22, I realized that the 9" vise lacked the guide rod bushings, so I ordered the 10" version with those guide bushing. I am *very* glad that I did. This vise is almost identical to the Wood River, and Lee Valley 10" vises but at a substantial savings (~$65 vs >$100). Of course, you're paying less b/c it's a china-made vise. We'll see if that make a difference in lifespan and performance. The metal castings are very good, mostly clean, and the mechanism operated cleanly without binding. The paint/powder coat was solid with no chipping or flaking. My only complaint about the manufacturing quality is that the hole in the handle's T fitting was not reamed and cleaned. It was very tight on my 1-1/8" handle and there were burrs and bits that scrapped up the handle. Installation was a real bear. There was no template and getting all of the holes "perfect" was very difficult. After struggling and ending up with "oval" holes for the screw and guide rods, I ended up taking the vise apart and using is as the template for the wood block. *that* worked perfectly. A those guide rod bushings became absolutely necessary for final installation and it was 100% worth the trouble to get the 10" vise over the 9" To be fair, every video I have watched on installing this type of vice seems to encounter problems. A factory template would have helped. I even tried making my own, but it's just a tricky thing and you have to get it right on the first try. The state of the T-handle interior finish, lack of a template, and the lack of any mounting hardware are the only reasons that I did not give this a 5-star review. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. Overall, very good deal. Shipped quickly ... show more

  • Very Good Heavy Duty Vise Very Good Heavy Duty Vise
I installed this vice two weeks ago. It took some time, but most woodworkers will have the skill to mount it properly. It's much more heavy duty than my previous Rockler vise, who's threads wore out after only about ten years of hobby use, and this ones about half the cost of the Rockler. It comes with instructions that are fair, so I advise to look at some youtube videos and take your time to get it right. In use it's strong, easy to open/close, and it holds wood in place very well. I put about a two degree tilt to the closing surface so that the top engages before the bottom, this really makes it a nice vise. ... show more

  • Heavy and beefy vise Heavy and beefy vise
Heavy and beefy vise. My application leaves the nut 4.5 inches from the jaw, I have a 1 inch Ipe jaw so end up with 9 inches max opening. There is no stop on my vise as reported by others, perhaps because this is a 10 inch or because it is newer. Best solution if needed would be to drill and tap the end of the screw, then a bolt and washer could be used to limit the opening. a 1 inch dowel fits loosely, 1 and 1/16 would fit better. Also a standard dowel gets marked up quickly. I made the endcaps (without a lathe) and glued them on. The inside of the handle opening is rough cast, so cleaning that out and using a larger dowel made out of harder material would be more satisfying feel. But it works as is so will just use it for a while and see how it goes. The instructions do not mention the two metal guide pieces. They do really help vertical racking but took a bit to get them located exactly right. There should be no resistance when sliding the bars in and out. I have been getting by for many years without a proper wood vise, I also have a Jawhorse which will do almost everything I need except some planing and using a drawknife. this vise should fill those functions nicely. • Impressive Front Vise Impressive Front Vise
WOW! Really impressive Front Vise! I was surprised how stout the construction is. Can't wait to install it! I might have to beef up my bench to handle this thing - lol (any excuse is a good excuse) HANDLE The opening for the handle is 1 1/16 in. Easy accepts a 1 in hardwood dowel and the handle end stops can be found at a local craft store. VISE STOP One of the slide rods has a 5/32 in hole that is 5/32 in from the end of the rod. If you want to have a Stop to keep you from extending the head out of it's threading, a Hitch Pin fits nicely and does a great job. I used a 1/8 x 2 1/2 that I found locally at a hardware store. - See Pics - INSTALL I know some reviews complain about not having a template for installing, but it's pretty easy to figure it out and if neede make your own template by disassembling it and tracing your own. ... show more

  • A Great DIY Workbench Vise A Great DIY Workbench Vise
I purchased this vice as an addition to a simple workbench that I built and I'm very happy with the result. Installation wasn't so much difficult as time consuming, in part because I had to modify my bench to accommodate it. Thankfully, the design of this vise allows for several different mounting options. The other reason it took so long is because the directions offered little guidance. There was no recommendation on what kind of mounting hardware to use, and it provided no template for drilling the holes to accommodate the rods. As a result, I'm giving this four stars, instead of five. Please note, this is just the vice. No mounting hardware. No jaws. However, that's the way it has to be considering that the length of screws and the width of jaws will vary greatly depending on your particular bench. In my case, I used Number 14 flat wood screws as my mounting hardware, and splurged on a 2x6 piece oak to use as the jaws. I also used some of the oak to fashion the end pieces on my handle (1" hardwood doweling). Happy with how it turned out. ALSO … Regarding the handle. It's advantageous for the handle to slide back and forth. There will be times that you'll want to be able to slide it all the way to the end piece, just to get it out of your way. Trust me on this. You don't want the handle to fit snug. A 1-inch piece of doweling slides easily. I wouldn't recommend using a diameter any greater than that. ** Photos show the vice before and after I applied stain and three coats of clear satin finish to the wood. ... show more

  • Good Vise for the money
I have installed two of these. Things I used: Good forstner bits with a good extender (tight fitting, doesn't wobble): allows clamping and drilling of both vise jaws at the same time, with backer board to prevent blowout 1" diameter hardwood dowel for the handle maple flagpole finials with 1" hole for the handle end caps .02" thick PETG plastic sheet, approximately 2.5" length by 3.5" circumference rolled up and inserted into the handle hole in the vise to form a bushing, secured by external circular beads of hot glue which form bump stops for the finials. Suggested improvement: A paper template for drilling the holes. ... show more
