  • Great for new photographers updating their lens collection
*: YN50mm F1.8S DA DSM II
If you have any of the sony aps-c alpha cameras or other small e-mount, these yongnuo lenses aren't bad to add to the collection. This 50mm version 2, has upgraded autofocus motors versus version 1 which is still for sale at about 25 bucks cheaper. So if you don't care about a quicker and slightly more accurate focus, it doesn't matter just get the older one which is closer to 100 bucks. But anyways, this lens looks big in the pictures, but is a more compact size and is great to carry around while sightseeing. This lens is 50mm so in aps-c terms it's 1.5 x 50 so it's about a 75mm equivalent lens. A lot of photographers like this size for portraits, but if you see some of the youtube or other reviews, some like it as a travel lens and use it for all types of photos. Of course your 28-70 zoom can do this too but at F4, this lens can do some better lower light shots . Anyways, for those who bought a kit with a zoom, a couple of primes are great to add to your collection, a wide angle like 11mm which is 16.5mm equivalent, i think they sell a 35mm which is 47.5mm and this lens a 75mm equivalent i think all these are at F1.8 or F2 so they are all great for all around photography. But just look at the reviews, these will be great to add to a starting photographers bag. Construction is plastic, but it feels solid and i didn't see any problems, except maybe the exposed usb port which is at the bottom so maybe not a big deal. This lens is very simple no switches or anything on it, just install on camera and go. I haven't tried but the ring supposedly allows manual focusing. The diameter is 49mm so i bought a uv protector lens cover and the provided lens hood and lens cover still work perfect with; th;at installed. Anyways for the price i think a no brainer to add to the bag for a portrait perfect type shots. I guess the only unknown is the longevity of this lens, i haven't seen any adverse reviews regarding any issues in this regard though. So for now 5 stars. ... show more

  • The best budget 50mm lens for Sony APS-C
*: YN50mm F1.8S
There are just a few reviews of this lens out there, but they are enough to generate good expectations. One thing that those reviews mention is that the lens is completely made of plastic and it feels kind of cheap. However, the lens has a better build quality than I expected and it does not feel that "plasticky". Also, the lens hood is thick enough and feels well build. It is lightweight though. Now let's talk about its performance. Autofocus: My first impression of using this lens on my a6300 for video and photos is that its autofocus works way better than I expected. It's not as fast as native Sony lenses, but it makes a good job. In extreme conditions of light (too bright or too dark) the lens may doubt itself a few millisecond, but in the end, it can focus even in those situations. Image quality: I'm not an expert in this field, however, in just a few words I can say that in the usual means of photo and video visualization you won't notice you are using a budget lens. Taking into account the results you can get with that wide aperture and 50mm, you will get pretty professional-like results using this lens in photos and videos. I consider this lens is a definite "buy". It has a similar price to some budget prime manual lenses, but with this Yongnuo, you are getting not only good image quality but also autofocus capability. ... show more

  • Spend a bit more
*: YN50mm F1.8S DA DSM II
I used this with a a sony a6000. Good- 1.8f. Light weight. Has autofocus. Bad-slow autofocus and struggles to catch focus. chromatic aberration In bright light. I instead found a Sony brand 50 f1.8 lens on ebay used for $150 and believe it is a better purchase for a bit more money. For me the slow autofocus made me not want to use it so if all you want yo do is take pictures of still subjects and portrait photos its not so bad but if you want to do any more than that i really don't recommend end it. ... show more

  • I was wrong! Great lens!
*: YN50mm F1.8S
Edit: I was able to find out how to update the lens. It’s an amazing budget lens and I’m loving using it. I’m new to photography so I am still tweaking how I do some shoots. The lens is okay and the quality is passable. My only gripe is that I can't seem to update the lens . I thought it was the cable but I've tried multiple USB-C Cables to no avail. It just won't recognize the lens. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Hopefully the seller reaches out soon! ... show more

this lens is terrible, and not even worth what it's worth unless your on a dessert island, that somehow gets amazon prime. I bought this as an emergency and was sorely let down, should've just moved the gig and took the loss.
