I am a compulsive knitter. My teenage son tells people that I knit so I don't hurt people. That might be true. I don't know for sure since I haven't stopped knitting to find out! Because knitting is basically my fidget toy, I prefer to have one complicated project, one pair of socks, and one really simple large knit all going at once. The simple large knit is usually the one I finish first. Both my LYS closed within a couple months of each other so I have to buy my yarn online now and wind it all myself. I used to wind balls by hand but now even my hand cranked ball winder has started feeling like a nuisance. Especially if I'm in a rush or trying to do an entire sweater of yarn at once. But this ball winder has solved the problem! My particular one came with a loose screw that my husband tightened for me and then it worked great. The clamp is the same as my old hand crank model so it does try to shimmy around at the faster speeds. I fixed that by putting some rubber grip shelf liner around the edge of the table before clamping it. I love that the tension and speed are both adjustable. Sometimes I've had my kids crank the old ball winder but they speed up and slow down a lot, which causes issues in the ball. This is totally steady. I was a little intimidated at first but it's very easy to use and intuitive once you've given it a try. It's just a little electric motor so much quieter than the wooden hand crank version they had at the LYS. It's larger than my hand crank one, which is good because you can do heavier yarn or larger skeins. I am really happy with this and just wish I had a craft room to keep it always set up!

I buy yarn in lots, so I get a lot of skeins at once and need them wound so I can store them. For years, I've been using a manual/hand winder which works great, but it is a slow process. The idea of an electric winder was great, but what I gain in efficiency, I lose out on in consistency. It's not terribly noisy or anything like that, feels sturdy enough that I'm not worried about it breaking on me, and is easy to use. I gave it 4 stars because it does wind the yarn, it does make my skeins easier to store, and I'm not having to do them all by hand-winder anymore. I took away a star because the finished product is a bit loose and uneven.

I got this and was very excited about it. I used it once and then the round piece that the bobbin goes on came apart from the base and I have been trying for days on end to get it to reattach and it will not. Needless to say I am very disappointed with it and will be throwing it in the garbage where it belongs

I was looking for an electric yarn winder for when I do mosaic or C2C graphgans and wind a lot of smaller cakes from bigger skeins. This arrived with a little bit of assembly required-which was easy to do. The tension can be adjusted depending on your yarn thickness. It also has the space for a larger cake which is helpful with thicker yarns. The problem is the winding sequence. The device pulls the yarn and rotated just fine, the finished cake created is uneven. I thought maybe it was tension so I tried again and diligently watched for a tension slip. Nothing. The winding sequence just winds the cake lopsidedly so then the cake has a clump on one side. That is not good for pulling while working a project-especially a center pulling cake. This unfortunately is being returned.

I had always wanted ayarn ball winder and couldn't really justify the expense or space. My 10 year old asked if we could get one, so I ordered a regular yarn ball winder for her birthday and loved it so much. I wanted one of my own. I saw this and decided to give it a try. I absolutely love it. You have to do some slight building when it comes, screwing together the arm. Once put together, this does not fit in the plastic storage bag very well. I really don't see myself taking it apart for storage due to this. That is a negative, as it would be nice to be able to quickly pack it in the box to minimize space. However, because the arm is screwed into place, it doesn't move on you, so taht is definitely a positive. It is really easy to thread your yarn and get started. The dial allows you to not only turn the winder on and off but also to adjust the speed. The yarn ball winder works well. It sometimes messes up at higher speeds, but myhusband and 17 year old were determined to max out the speed as much as possible and got a system going to accommodate at higher speeds. I think they enjoyed themselves, and that may be an added benefit. Now, do I not only have to roll balls of yarn, but I can get them to use the electric yarn ball winder to make my yarn cakes. The yarn cakes that come out of this are nice and compact. I didn't ahve any 10 ounce skeins to try, but this definitely accommodated 6 ounces with no issue. I love it. I will be winding all of my yarn with this from now on.

The media could not be loaded. I will say I was a little concerned because most of the parts seem like cheap plastic. The base with the motor is heavier. I guess it really doesn’t matter that it’s a thinner plastic because there’s no pressure or weight put on it. It just holds yarn. The delivery speed was fast. The packaging is very good. Instructions are very clear. All extra parts needed for assembly are included, even a little screwdriver. The assembly was not difficult and the process took less than 10 minutes. The only thing I will say is the screws are very tiny and if you have big hands, you better have a magnetic screwdriver to put those little screws in the little holes. As far as working the Winder, it’s a very easy operation. You just turn the knob in the front to increase or decrease the speed. It does not go very fast. That being said, it sure is a lot nicer than hand cranking. I really like this yarn winder. As you can see in the photo, my green manual winder, and the new pink winder have a very similar footprint. The pink one is just a little bit bigger. For me, this is a very worth it upgrade.
