You need a swift. This little winder is fine and it comes with a plethora of handy notions. But the reality is that without a swift to keep the yarn from tangling and provide a steady tension, the winder arm drops and the yarn quickly gets caught underneath. It SEEMS like it would be possible to hold the skein and crank the winder -- and it is, sometimes, I got a few done, -- but had to give up and buy a swift to go with it. It is easy to assemble and works ok, but it’s not very sturdy and feels “cheap”. I wish I had spent a little more for a better quality winder, but I’m new to this and did not know what to look for. It will surprise me if the plastic gears last very long. I only would 1 skein and it jumped sprockets several times. I’m sure it will strip out the gear with soon. I just hope to get my money’s worth before it does. Assembly was a struggle at first because I didn’t know the winder bobbin had to lock in. It kept spinning off the gear. Once I figured that out, I was able to wind my skein quickly, but then I could not disassemble it for storage. The plastic is flimsy and thin, and I didn’t want to risk breaking it, so I left it assembled for use next time. Makes storage a little difficult, because it won’t go back in the box now, but I can live with that. I’ll do a little research so that my next one will be a better quality. ... show more

So far so good. I've already wound over 100 cakes of yarn. A lot of the yarn I've wound was a tangled mess. It was yarn I inherited from my late mom and sister. The yarn winds really easy and fast. Winding the yarn is enjoyable and having my yarn in cakes makes it a lot easier to store. I'm a machine knitter and crocheter and feel having my yarn made into cakes will make my knitting and crocheting easier and I will no longer have to chase down my balls of yarn or deal with yarn barf like I do when I knit directly from the skein. ... show more

    • Do not waste your time on this winder
First of all it is very cheap plastic. The first one was cracked, so they sent a replacement. The replacement is more cracked than the original so I give up and am just going to super glue the original and only use it if I absolutely need to. So pretty much a waste of money. I'll return the more broken replacement. The eye that holds the yarn does not stay locked into place and multiple times during winding you will have to fix that and also unwind yarn from the bottom. Pointless to have a yarn winder that you have to keep fixing and unwinding. The only reason it got a couple stars was ease to set up and quickness on replacemen, even though the replacement was worse. Don't waste your money on this!! ... show more

This is a great little budget winder. I've had zero problems with it, but I keep seeing the same complaints. Some suggestions: during assembly, you need to pull on the metal arm harder than you'd think to get it to lock into place, but while winding, provide most of the tension with your fingers anyway so as not to overtax it. The other complaint is cake size. As is, the cakes it creates are pretty small, but pop an empty toilet paper tube on top of your just-secured yarn, and BAM, double your cake size.     • It wiggles even fully tightened, scissors don't cut
The media could not be loaded. Maybe I got a faulty winder but it wiggles even tighten all the way on to the table. Will modify review if this is faulty and is replaced as it does work well but it's hard to hold and wind at the same time. Scissors cut if you cut a few times but that's what this type of scissor is for ... show more
