This is a simple ODBII scanner. Upon testing on post 1996 Fords and Chevy vehicles, the scanner readily identified trouble codes with accuracy, and was able to clear most of them without a hitch. It cannot, however, clear manufacturer specific codes such as Ford AdvanceTrac codes, or clear more "in depth" codes such as Chevy's U1501 code after multiple tries. As such, it's great for identifying trouble codes and in most cases clearing them. For the home mechanic that works on basic service issues, it's a handy tool that's easy to use. This is a handy gadget to keep around. Anytime our check engine light would come on, it meant a trip in town to auto zone to see what their scanner was saying.     • An inexpensive tool to check and clear codes

This is a basic OBD2 reader well-suited for casual owner-driven maintenance and peace of mind. It helped me determine that a recent check-engine light was simply due to a loose gas gap in less time than a trip to the local auto shop. As is typical for readers, this device doesn't require any extra power or connectors - it's an all-in-one that starts up as soon as it is plugged in to the vehicle. It will provide some basic diagnostics if it is unable to connect (e.g., start the engine, check the cable, etc...). The main menu provides access to the code reading & clearing functionality, as well as a basic code-lookup (though you may need an external reference to interpret those codes), and some basic battery & evap monitor. The device can read (and graph) some real-time engine data (e.g., watch the RPM as a rough idle smooths as the engine warms up). The unit itself seems well constructed from hard/durable plastic, and is easy to hold. The cable is thick enough to withstand the occasional accidental closed-door-on-the-cable incident, and long enough to be held or stowed out of the way while seated. This little unit provides interesting and useful insight into the engine's state, and is helpful to keep in the trunk for peace of mind (or immediate action) when those random check-engine lights pop up while you're already a few hundred miles out of town. If you're an enthusiast or pro-sumer, this unit is likely more basic than what you're looking for, but for the price, it has certainly delivered value. ... show more

I'm an older seasoned automotive technician, I'm reviewing this product based on my many years of experience in the field using high quality tools and equipment. This mini scanner is for OBD 2 based vehicles (96 and newer), scanner will not work with any pre 1996 vehicles. Scanner is really small in physical size, which includes the tiny screen. Has several onscreen menu options like OBD2 and Battery. The battery mode only reads battery voltage, it doesn't test the battery. Has a trouble code or DTC "lookup" library, but the codes I tried to look up were not in the database, so may only be for primary codes like engine misfire, oxygen sensor, or TPS related codes and such. This is more of a code reader than anything, it will do a basic data stream of information. Readings on this very small scanner compared to our normal shop scanner showed it to be reasonably correct. No storage case other than the box. Instruction booklet leaves a lot to be desired, and the small print is not helpful. Might be good to just throw in the glove box to have when traveling, or very basic diagnostics. Price point is considered very reasonable for this item. ... show more

I needed an inexpensive, but durable “OBD2 Scanner Code Reader” to determine and clear a reoccurring “Code” that keeps activating my “Check Engine” light. The “XpertAuto C302 OBD2 Scanner Code Reader” got the job done! The Reader connected easily to my car’s OBD2 Port and powered up immediately. The screen on the Reader isn’t a “touchscreen”, but the screen is well lit, and easy to view in sunlight, and artificial lighting (fluorescent, LED, etc.) The Reader is lightweight, comfortable to hold, and can be easily navigated with one hand. Overall, the ““XpertAuto C302 OBD2 Scanner Code Reader” is an affordable addition to a weekend mechanic’s tool box. It’s easy to use, gives quick diagnostics, and it’s accurate! This OBD2 Scanner works well. The scanner came nicely packaged in a plastic wrapped box with a basic instruction pamphlet. I tested the scanner on a car with known codes and they all showed up. The buttons and interface wording on the tool is very intuitive, better than some of the other scanners I've used. A couple extra features like the VIN, voltage, etc. are a very nice touch. This scanner was simple to hook up and easy to use. If fit the OBD2 port in my truck and I was able to look at the fault codes easily. There is no extras to purchase to use this and it is powered by the port and does not require batteries. This also allows logging and you can see the voltage on the battery.
