The rack itself is good. Seems worth the money. However, as some have stated, the bolts that come with it are unnecessarily long and can hit the roof of your car. Also the Cam Buckle Straps that come with it are pretty short if you're tying down a wider kayak. They wouldn't work with my 34" wide kayak. It also doesn't come with any straps to tie down the front and rear of the kayak. So, here's what I needed to make this rack work with my kayaks. 8 - M8x1.25 Carriage Bolts 50mm long (The length of the supplied bolts are 65mm. 50mm is the lowest I could go with factory aero bars (Toyota/Lexus). 2 - 10" Cam Buckle Straps (To strap a 34" kayak to the rack) 2 - 18" Cam Buckle Straps (To secure the front and back of the kayaks to the vehicle) Other than that, I've transported two 11 foot long x 34 inch wide Kayaks each weighing 65lbs on this rack. ... show more

    • The paddle straps are hard to open

Assembled and went on like a champ. The bands holding the kayak paddle are hard to open so I suggest taking the kayak paddle apart and inserting it through the band and putting the paddle back together. Kayak sits in it perfectly and it even came with straps. Yay!!! Get this if you have two kayaks.

    • How to make it perfect
Excellent bang/ buck overall - with one serious flaw: rubber padding at all contact points... except where bottom aluminum plate of this unit mounts against the roof rack. I understand that the roof racks are viewed as "consumables" - but this is simply unacceptable to me, given the $75k spent for my loaded Chevy Tahoe. My solution was to buy a plain grey shower mat (has one sticky side for sticking to shower/ tub floor) from a certain store [begins with a "W"] then cut pieces to fit bottom rack plate where it will contact roof racks, then drill holes for bolts. Stick it on and for the low, low price of $12 you have a modified kayak rack that is perfect. In my case this simple fix changed my rating from a ~3.5 to a 5 star rating. ... show more

I purchased specialty Evo Thule crossbars for my vehicle and install them. Then I realized they a wider oval than most kayak racks’ specifications allow. I was pretty nervous purchasing these because they simply had no specifications on how wide an oval was too much. They came in two days ago and I installed them yesterday in about 10 minutes with no complications or problems at all. They easily fit the Evo bars. It required no tools to install either. The vertical bars lay down perfectly flat because they can fit down past the J bar when laying flush. Overall very impressed with this product. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because each bracket that attaches it to the crossbars only attaches by two bolts per side. In the past, I have preferred kayak racks that attach via four bolts per side. But I really like that at least on flash and has a place to store the paddles. ... show more

    • Quality product, Caution about Bolts length
Very nice rack and quality product all around. Easy installation and use. Please note you need to have raised/tall cross bars, if using the bolts they send. The bolts will could otherwise be way too long and it won't fit your vehicle. Note: the bolts that come with the racks are 3" M8-1.25 bolts. These were about an inch too long for my vehicle and would've caused significant scratching/damage to my roof. I replaced them with 2" 5/16 diameter carriage bolts and they fit very well. Had to also buy 5/16" nuts of course as well. I had just got brand new 220lb rated cross bars on my 4runner but the bolts for this rack were way too long. The cross bars I got are standard profile with about 2.5" roof clearance. This issue did initially cost me extra $ for new bolts and several hours of my time to replace/correct. The company customer service was great acknowledging and working with me to resolve the initial bolt problem.     • Works as described, very sturdy

The plastic guides that channel the straps at the top of the center post dividers were both broken upon arrival. The shipping fils had apparently dropped the package and upon impact they both snapped. Also, on my SUV roof rack (GMC-very common) the shoulder on the carriage bolts prevents the clamps from tightening to the roof rack bars. And since these same carriage bolts are long ( to accommodate a universal fit) there is a real possibility that you could have the bolt ends hit the roof of your car. I added some foam pads underneath the roof rack and that suspended the whole assembly. These are metric carriage bolts, so difficult to find ina half inch shorter version at most common hardware stores. Even so, even with these issues, this carrier system is very strong, well built and did the job well. I like it. Hence the five star rating.. Now...send me 8- 1/2" shorter carriage bolts and I'll be really pleased! ... show more
