The media could not be loaded. This is an honest review of the Comica Boom XU-2, a lavaliere microphone intended for amateur filmmakers, YouTubers and lecturers. As someone who regularly uses lavaliere microphones in my day to day work, I’m no stranger to Comica’s products. I’ve owned and enjoyed their original Boom XU-1, which I felt stood up very well to more expensive offerings like the Shure BLX 14. I was excited to test this one out because, while I enjoyed the form factor and overall design of the original, there was one small thing that I felt held it back and that was it’s rather boomy sound, when speaking off axis. In this newest iteration Comica has blessed the XU-2 with a little neat trick in the form of a built in high pass filter. That should in theory cut out all those muddy low end frequencies and rectify what I really saw as the only problem with the previous version. But before we get too far, let’s talk about what’s in the box. My Boom XU-2 came with A nice carrying Case, and multitude of accessories, making it easy to plug into a DSLR, a sound system or even your phone. Mine included two transmitters and one receiver. That configuration makes it perfect for one on one interviews or any event with more than one speaker. All three units are powered by their own internal lithium ion batteries, and are changed via usb C. Getting up and running was easy. My transmitter and receiver communicated just fine without having to change any settings and within minutes, I was ready to go. So how is the audio quality? Well, in my opinion, excellent and I have a few other mics to compare it to. In my tests it performed almost identically to the the more expensive Shure BLX 14 and was a significant improvement over cheaper products, like this FiFine. Most importantly, the addition of that high pass filter makes it a worthy successor over the original XU-1. So, who would I recommend this for? In my opinion, this product is ideal for YouTubers and Amateur filmmakers or documentarians, but it’s also excellent for teachers or clergy who need to amplify their voices in a live setting. It’s just as easy to use with a DSLR as it is with a PA system, making it ideal for a variety of use cases. For 250 dollars, at the time of this review, it isn’t the cheapest thing on the market, and if you’re willing to sacrifice quality there are other options, but I think it’s hard to deny the value this product offers. It easily keeps up with more expensive offerings from the likes of Shure and pushes the boundaries of what one can expect from this price range. The media could not be loaded. I have needed a good quality audio lav microphone setup that can provide stereo channels. The BoomX-U2 with two transmitters will give you right and left channels. I like the UHF because it does not interfere with 2.4g devices. The BoomX-U2 has two foldaway antennas that give a longer range if needed. However, if you decide to use them on your device you need to be very aware of them as they could get tangled. You don't want to damage the antenna. For most cases the foldable antenna will not need to be used. Today I used my new setup with the Blackmagic ATEM Mini and a Zoom session. I wanted a lav microphone so I could move about without loosing audio quality. The Zoom session was nearly 2 hours long and this did not skip a beat. The quality of audio is great and that was with the little lav microphone that comes with the device vs the microphone in the little box itself. So now I know I can do a long Zoom class without audio compromise and even do sit-down interviews with two channel input. Not sure you can do better than that. Setup is pretty easy too but I do recommend you go through your manual before use. The device comes in a nice carry case and it is much smaller than I had expected it to be. Lots of quality in such a small package. Easy to take on the road to interviews. It can also be used with your phone so if you have to use your phone for video and audio you can plug it in and it will work. With the iPhone you still need the dongle. That is the only gripe. I use the iPhone so I live with the issue but it really is no big deal. Just don't loose your dongle. Keep one in your Comica carry case as a spare. If you have any other phone, you are golden.     • Amazing quality at a great price!
I have to admit, before I purchased this setup, I had a budget wireless microphone setup but there was noticeable hiss that I had to remove in post production. This setup is a WHOLE different animal. It’s a night and day difference for the better! Two microphones transmitting at the same time, with capabilities to set volume and monitor battery levels and audio pick up on each channel individually is great. One or both microphones can be muted if necessary and a low cut filter enhances the way you here speech in a recording. There are antennas on both the receiver and transmitter for added range, but for recording in a small room, you won’t need to worry about flipping the antennas up. Mounting the VERY lightweight units is easy with the included pocket clip, which also happens to be the exact size of a hot shoe, so that it can be mounted to the top of a camera. You have the flexibility of using the microphone built into the transmitter or attaching the included lapel mic. Sound pickup is of course more sensitive with the lapel microphone and allows for more discreet use of the unit. The included, padded carrying case makes for easy storage and transportation of the whole system. Overall, this is an absolute bargain for the sound quality, size and features! ... show more
