I had a great year in the apiary and will be going into winter in northern IL with more hives than last year. It will be imperative to wrap my woodenware hives to add insulation. I did a test run on some empties because it's not quite winter wrap time here yet. It fit well over two brood boxes and a honey super box in 10 frame size. This beehive wrap will make it super simple to insulate my wooden hive bodies. The materials of this wrap are heavy weight and high quality. This is made of canvas over a foil insulated sheet (think the bubbly thing you put in your car window to keep the sun out). It attaches to itself with a thick strip of velcro. I have similar wraps that I have to put bungee straps around just to make sure they are secure from the wind but this comes with two adjustable straps so I won't need to do that. It has both a velcro closure and the straps to secure it so it's definitely not going anywhere. I like that I can use this over again for multiple winters, so I hope that the material over winters well. If it doesn't, I will be sure to update. Now here's to hoping the girls make it through the winter. Fingers crossed.

I will have to wait until next spring to give a thorough evaluation, but here is what I know so far: In southern Missouri, winters aren't too bad, so I'm mostly just used house wrap in the past. However, this past winter saw an unusually low cold snap that killed four of my hives, so I thought it best to be a little more proactive this winter. Unwrapping the hive wrap, I was immediately impressed with the solid construction. The outside is a canvass type material while the inside is a type of reflective foil. The straps are adjustable for a close fit and should make it super easy to get it installed on the hive. My main concern is that I wonder how much more R value I'm getting from this as compared to the house wrap I was using before. I know it is better, but by how much? I wish this had arrived with just a little more padding.

My wife is a beekeeper with only 3 hives, her sister has 100 hives and a business with bees. Last year the three hives swarmed and we lost the investment. My sister-in-law lives on the opposite coast but flew to the east coast and helped my wife replenish the hives (see picture of the hives by our barn). She recommended based on research that we might want a bee hive wrap to keep them warmer in the winter conditions. I purchased this and then set it up and then of course as it is summer took it off and stored in the barn until the winter months. We will give these are try and the post if they are a success. So far, we are pleased with the quality and the size which fits both 8 and 10 frame hives.

Firstly, the material on this hive wrap is great. Much better than most other hive wraps I've seen on the market. It's a ballistic nylon type material with reflectix type foil insulation on the inside. There is velcro to hold everything together and straps to ensure that it stays on tight. There are two velcro locations, which I'm assuming is for 10 frame and 8 frame hive bodies. The wrap fits an 8 frame body without any issues, however I had trouble getting it around a 10 frame body. The straps come in handy for that, but there are exposed areas. The height of the wrap is about 4-5 inches taller than two deep hive bodies, so you'll have to add a honey super or quilt box to compensate for the extra material. This would be great for a honey super, but keeping a quilt box warm defeats the purpose of the quilt box. The other issue I worry about is the R factor. There isn't an insulation factor listed for this wrap, but I suppose anything can be better than nothing. I look forward to using the wrap this winter to see how well it performs!

Here is a great beehive wrap for those of us overwintering bees in colder climates. I have become a fan of these and feel I get a better survival rate for my bees with the extra wrap - which makes sense. You need a minimum colony size to maintain enough heat to keep your bees in a survivable state. The wrap helps let that number get a little lower with the added help keeping the hive a livable temperature through the deep winters in Michigan. Nice durable outside material with a reflective heat retaining inside, this unique hive wrap has added straps to secure it beyond the Velcro, which is nice, the wrap JUST fits around my 10 frame boxes. The extra strap clips well help ensure the wrap does not go anywhere over the winter. This wrap is the same size as most of my other wraps, but note it just fits height wise on my demo single deep and two medium boxes, which is taller than just two deep boxes. So if you only leave you bees with two deeps for the winter, this would be too tall. Great wrap quality and your bees will thank you!

Pros: Construction quality is good. I found no defects in this product. The fabric is sturdy and the insulation layer is evenly distributed. The extra straps/buckles are a nice addition. Cons: It *barely* fits around a 10-frame box. And that's with some stretching and tugging to get it there. If they had added an extra 2 inches of length it would be much easier to use and hardly add any cost to their manufacturing. Other thoughts: It had a lot of potential, but their attempts to cut costs by making it shorter than ideal makes it harder to use and more likely to be damaged when applying it. Technically it DOES still fit a 10-frame hive, but its a tough squeeze to get it there. Really I'd say this is best suited to an 8-frame hive.

My last hive didn't survive the winter. Hopefully this gives my new hive a better shot! It has a reflective interior and some insulation, and a black exterior. It has both Velcro and buckles for securing it to your hive. When I pulled on the straps one of them seemed like it would tear out the stitching if I pulled to hard, but hopefully it will hold up for a few seasons at least.
