  • Seems like great stand for printer
Style: Storage
INTRO I bought this because I am desperate for storage space for cables, various pieces and parts and other "project" type stuff. I got this specific unit to use mostly as a printer stand because it matches the 5-drawer unit I got to go under my desk and the two 7-drawer units I got for cables and such. It was 33% off the list price of $240, and I paid $159.63. I also got the 5-drawer and two 7-drawer units: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006WYUQDY?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006WYUQ8Y?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details PRICING: I think the price is only slightly high for what you get. This is basically a 5-drawer unit with smaller drawers and a storage cabinet built into it. Based on that, I figure it should sell for about 85% of two 5-drawer units, which would be $133. I paid $160, so 20% over-priced, relative to what I paid for a 5-drawer stand-alone unit. Anyway - aside from that...quality is OK. Tolerances are a little loose - so things are not lined up perfectly. There's a bit too much spacing/slop in the drawers for my taste. Given the quality, I think $120 would be more reasonable for this unit. GENERAL COMMENTS: The drawers are shallow height, and shallow depth (compared to the cabinet) so they hold a lot less than you probably want. They also doesn't hold anything with much height, such as a small 3 oz can of spray paint, which is a real bummer. So for arts & crafts and projects like that, these drawers are probably not ideal. For holding 8.5" x 11" papers in two stacks side by side, they won't work. For storage of things like computer cables, various electronics gadgets, pencils and staplers and office kinds of things, they're OK. This unit is a rolling unit. The wheels are cheap plastic, but it rolls OK on my hardwood floor. Would probably suck on carpet. To my surprise and delight, I discovered that the wheels do have "locks" on them, so you can lock it into position to keep it from moving. Handy if you wanted to use the surface for a work table or something. The drawers slide OK for what they are. They don't really "lock in" so they will want to slide out if you roll the unit around much. This unit could be greatly improved if the drawers had better retention, so you had to more actively slide them out, with a little effort. You could probably paint this unit if you wanted to. Would be kind of a PITA. I'd recommend scuffing the entire surface to be painted, for better adhesion. I would also recommend doing it before assembly, and using a sprayer or roller, rather than a paint brush. Unit could use a handle on the front, so give you something to grab on to when rolling it. Side would work, but for my use case, front would be better since it is under my desk facing forward. I will probably acquire a handle and install it when I get some time. IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED: First, the drawers for all of these Winsome Halifax Storage/Organization pieces are shorter than the cabinets. There is room in the cabinets to make the drawers another 2" deeper (toward the wall), but they don't do so. I don't understand why. Either make the drawer deeper or the cabinet shorter. Secondly, the width of these drawer units should be a little wider, so they can handle two reams of paper side by side. As it is, you can put one ream of paper in, and then have space on one side of it that isn't useful for much. I'd love to be able to put in a second ream of paper, or even stack standard size printouts side by side. The product would be so much better if they just added a few inches to the unit's width. That is less of an issue since this unit does have the larger storage area. That's not wide enough to put two reams of paper next to each other either. You CAN put it on its end, and get a lot of paper in that way. However, the top hole for the adjustable shelf is JUST SLIGHTLY too high to allow you to put the shelf on the highest setting and still put a ream of paper on its side into the unit. That's a shame because if this is what you want to use it for, you have to put the shelf on the second highest setting, wasting space that could be used for the under shelf area. This kinds of details and thoughtfulness are helpful when designing products. Third, the drawers need some "retention" so they snap closed and don't open when you roll the units. The drawers would be more useful if they had a little more height, so you could store slightly larger things in them. They are 3.75" high and should be more like 4.5" high (or even 5"). BUILDING THE UNITS: As an experienced DIY person, it took me 1 hour and 24 minutes to build this. That includes unboxing/unpacking it, sorting out all the parts, throwing away all packaging and boxes to the trash outside and then actually building the unit. Yesterday it took me about 2 hours to build the 5-drawer unit. Earlier today, I built two 7-drawer units in 1 hour and 9 minutes each. So I had plenty of experience building this kind of unit before I built this one. The instructions SUCK! They're the typical "no words, only pictures" type of instructions. Plus, nothing was labeled. In the pictures, they show part "A" or "B" or whatever, but the pieces themselves are not labeled. You have to keep referring back to the parts list and figure out which part is which. Even pre-sorting the stuff doesn't help much. The biggest issue was that in the very first step, the picture shows one thing, but then they show a measurement to go by. The information conflicts. What are you supposed to do? Here's a hint. Ignore the whole "16mm" thing entirely. Just do what the PICTURE shows, which is using the SECOND HOLE on the metal part on the front. It won't come out to 16mm from the front of the cabinet, but that's OK. They should just delete the "16 mm" part because all it does is add confusion. For the reason above - I ended up skipping this part of the instructions and went to building the drawers first. DEFECTIVE PARTS: This unit came with two defective wheels that keep the unit from sitting on the floor level. I didn't want to wait the 7-14 day lead time to get replacement parts, so I had to report the product as defective and get a replacement from Amazon, which only takes two days. ... show more

  • Nice lil cabinet. Assembly is a PITA!
Style: Storage
Got this for my wife for her work. Like many of the other reviews say, the “instructions” are a JOKE! The only thing useful about them is identifying the different type of screw/dowel hardware. The little thing, once together, is a pretty nice solid cabinet. Assembly is crazy! I took me 3 hours to assemble. Now that I’m familiar with how it goes together I could, of course probably do it in 2. The drawer assembly is the worst! I’m not trying to discourage anyone from purchasing this unit, just be aware of what you’re getting yourself into! ... show more

  • Well designed
Style: Storage
I use this as a printer stand in my home office. For me this solved the problem of where do I put my printer and have the supplies out of sight while adding additional storage in the drawers. I am very happy with the design and function of this piece. Some people have said it is difficult to assemble, but all of my pieces were clearly marked and I made sure I had everything before I started assembly. It is typical "flat pack" assembly, so if you don't have experience with that it might seem a little confusing but I found the instructions clear and well illustrated. Assembly took me a little over an hour. ... show more

  • Liked this so much that I bought TWO of them!
Style: Storage
I bought this storage piece for my home office a few months back, and it's a great product imo. Love it so much that I bought a second storage piece! I'd rate it a 10-star for the money if I could. I'm middle-aged and so I have enough years of assembling things that I follow a process to avoid issues. For instance, I unpack everything and set each part out, so the doors, drawers and wood pieces are organized. I also unpacked the 3 boxes of hardware, and sit them out neatly, so that the labels are face up and easy for me to read. I used scissors, a Philips screwdriver, wood glue and a hammer. I'm a woman mid-50's and did this on my own taking breaks as I went. I had NO trouble whatsoever with the assembly, and had no leftover or extra parts. If you're on the fence about this product, just trust me, if you organize the parts, follow the instructions, take your time, you'll be rewarded with a functional storage that you'll love. I'd buy a 3rd for my craft/office supplies, but I'm out of wall space so I cannot! :-) ... show more

  • Missing instruction pages
Style: Storage
I love the utility of this cabinet but it was missing the first two pages of instructions on how to build it. There is no pdf online I could find to help actually build it. The parts also do not come with a tool so you will need your own screwdriver. Overall the instructions were not the easiest to follow and pretty frustrating. The particle boards aren’t always cut perfectly either so I had to go in and make extra cuts to make sure things lined up properly. I wouldn’t recommend buying this at full price but for a sale it’s good. ... show more

  • Some insights that COULD give this a FIVE Star rating ...
Style: Storage
For one thing, while the WRITTEN directions were labeled fairly good - THE various screw and smaller ITEMS were not. Each screw packet had to be matched up, which took up the most time over all just for starters. Each furniture Panel had to be spread out, and IF you don't have much room to work with, this was tediously a pain in the Tockus (deep breath). I HAD to do this so I could make sure it matches the written Directions. The first hour alone, was annoying because I had to figure it out the VISUALS, to the point of exasperation - one mistake could set me back. You could barely see the writing on the metal parts. One is Left, the other is Right. IT is a good thing I am patient. It would be Valuable to put marked stickers on each panel AND Marked Stickers on EACH Plastic bag that had the screws....that matched the Written markings on the Written Direction Pamphlet. Because they don't look as easily visible in the Written Document. Did I confuse you yet? Overall, this is at least a Four Hour Effort for a Single Person. I would hate to see how long it could take for Two people because of the confusion of the Parts and directions. And hopefully, you'll still be friends by the time this is finished. ... show more
